How to Check a Prerecorded Video for Content ID Before Streaming It on YouTube

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Upload the finished video to YouTube Studio and review the Checks page before using it as a livestream source. YouTube’s Copyright check can identify potential matches, but it is not a clearance: the check may take time, and YouTube says its results are not final. YouTube also scans active livestreams, so a video that passes upload checks can still be interrupted or claimed later.

How to check a video for copyright before you stream it

  1. In YouTube Studio, start the upload process for the final video file you intend to stream. Upload it early enough to allow the checks to run.
  2. On the upload flow’s Checks page, review the Copyright result and any issue or claimed segment shown. YouTube says this check searches for copyrighted content submitted to its system. YouTube’s upload instructions explain that checks may continue in the background.
  3. If Studio reports a match, open the claim details and review the claimant and the identified segment. Decide whether to remove or replace that material, confirm that you have the necessary rights, or dispute the claim if you have a valid basis.
  4. Wait for the Copyright check to finish before treating its result as the completed screening. You can publish while checks are still running, but then the screening is unfinished. Once checked, use the reviewed file as your stream source.
  5. If YouTube archives the livestream, inspect the archive’s Restrictions or Claims information after the stream ends.

Check the exact final export, not an earlier cut: edits, replacement audio, or other changes can make the checked file different from the one you actually stream. The practical reason to upload in advance is that YouTube says checks can take time; this is a precaution, not a promise about how long any particular check will take.

What a Content ID match means

A claim can affect a video in different ways: it may be blocked, monetized (in some cases with revenue shared with the uploader), or tracked. The effect can vary by country or region. In YouTube Studio, inspect the claim information to see who made the claim and what part of the video was identified. YouTube’s claims guidance distinguishes Content ID claims from copyright removal requests and copyright strikes.

A match is not, by itself, a ruling that your use is unlawful. You may have permission or a potentially applicable copyright exception, but you need to assess the specific material and circumstances. Review the claim and your rights before deciding whether to remove content or dispute it; do not assume that every match is either automatically valid or automatically mistaken. YouTube’s Copyright tips provide further context.

Upload checks and livestream scanning are different

Workflow When it runs What it does What it does not establish
Upload Checks for a prerecorded video During the YouTube Studio upload process, before publication; checks can continue in the background. Checks the uploaded video for potential copyright issues submitted to YouTube. A completed check is not final clearance and does not guarantee that a later livestream or archive will be uninterrupted or claim-free.
YouTube live-stream scanning While the stream is active. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including content in another live broadcast. It may display a placeholder image and warn the streamer; if the content remains, the stream may be temporarily interrupted or terminated. Passing an upload check does not exempt the live stream from scanning.
Live Content ID matching for eligible partners In real time, at the channel level. A separate feature for eligible partners using YouTube Studio Content Manager to match copies of live streams. It is not the ordinary creator workflow for checking a prerecorded file before using it as a stream source.

YouTube says that if a livestream is archived, Content ID claims are made after the stream is completed. An upload check therefore cannot determine whether the later archive will receive a claim. See YouTube’s guidance on live-stream copyright and its live Content ID matching information for these separate processes and the partner feature’s eligibility conditions.

How to inspect a claim on an existing upload

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Content.
  2. Use the filter bar and choose Claims.
  3. Find the video and inspect its Restrictions column.
  4. Select See details to review claim information, including the claimant and the content identified.

These labels and locations follow YouTube’s documented workflow and may change. If your Studio interface differs, use its current claim or restriction details. See YouTube’s instructions for checking Content ID claims.

Private or unlisted does not mean unchecked

Uploading a video as private or unlisted is not a substitute for reviewing the Checks page and does not make it exempt from YouTube’s copyright review. YouTube says private and unlisted videos may be reviewed. Anyone with an unlisted video’s link can view and reshare it, so unlisted is not the same as confidential. See YouTube’s video privacy settings guidance.

Will YouTube stop a livestream if the video has copyrighted music?

It may, but the outcome depends on what YouTube identifies and what happens during the stream. YouTube scans active livestreams for third-party content. It can warn the streamer and show a placeholder; if identified content continues, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. A prerecorded upload check can flag potential issues in advance, but it cannot guarantee that the live stream will continue without action.
