OBS Studio can turn a folder of gaming videos into one YouTube Live broadcast: install VLC, add the files to OBS’s VLC Video source playlist, choose the playback order and loop behavior, then connect OBS to a YouTube stream key. Test the actual files and stream health before scheduling the broadcast; a folder by itself is not a YouTube Live input.
What you need before you start
- OBS Studio to play the videos and encode the resulting scene for YouTube. YouTube describes an encoder as software that converts video into a digital format for streaming. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- VLC installed on the same computer as OBS. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC; match the architecture, so 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. OBS Project: Media Sources.
- A verified YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says the channel must have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days, and streamers must be at least 16 under its general live-streaming guidance. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well ahead of your broadcast. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming and YouTube Help: YouTube live streaming restrictions.
- Permission to broadcast every video, music track, and other element in the files. Having a local copy does not itself establish streaming rights; check the applicable rights before going live.
Add a folder of videos to an OBS playlist
- Open OBS and create or select the scene you want to broadcast. In the Sources panel, click + and choose VLC Video. If that source is missing, install VLC and restart OBS.
- In the source properties, add the individual video files to the playlist. Select the files from the folder; the folder itself is not the input. Arrange the playlist in the intended order. OBS’s VLC Video source supports multiple playlist items; its default is to play in order without shuffling. OBS Project: Media Sources.
- Set Loop Playlist if playback should restart at the beginning after the last item. Leave it off for a one-pass sequence. Check shuffle settings so playback is predictable; default playlist order is not shuffled.
- Size and position the source in the scene. Confirm that the video fits the intended canvas and does not appear cropped or obscured by other sources. If you add overlays or audio sources, verify they do not cover or unintentionally duplicate the media.
- Click OK, then test every playlist item in OBS. Check image, framing, sound, file order, transitions between files, and what happens at the end of the playlist. Playlist support does not guarantee that every file’s codec, container, or audio track will decode properly on your computer.
Why use VLC Video instead of Media Source?
OBS’s Media Source is intended for an individual media file and offers a single-file loop option. For a multi-file sequence, use VLC Video, which OBS documents as its playlist source: “Unlike Media Source, you can create a playlist of items, similar to an Image Slideshow.” OBS Project: Media Sources.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live event. If this is the channel’s first live broadcast, enable live streaming in advance; first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Open the event’s stream settings in YouTube Studio and copy its stream URL and stream key.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube as the service and enter the stream details requested by OBS. If you configure a custom server, use the URL shown for the event. YouTube treats the stream key like a password and address: do not publish it, share it, or expose it in a recording or screenshot. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Choose RTMPS rather than RTMP if your encoder supports it; RTMPS is the encrypted form of RTMP. YouTube Help: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Start the OBS stream and inspect the event preview in YouTube Live Control Room before making the broadcast public or starting the scheduled event.
Choose encoding settings your connection can sustain
The best setting is not simply the highest resolution OBS offers. Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate appropriate to the source footage and your sustained upload capacity. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate encoding; frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended 2-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding 4 seconds. - Video codec: Use a codec supported by your encoder and YouTube’s guidance. If unsure, choose a supported, compatible option available in OBS.
- Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends for encoder streaming.
- Keyframes: Set a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Frame rate and resolution: Match the intended presentation and the source material where practical. Lower them if the upload connection or encoder cannot sustain a stable feed.
- Upload headroom: YouTube recommends leaving about 20% capacity above the total stream bitrate. For example, if the combined video and audio bitrate is 10 Mbps, aim for sustained upload capacity of about 12 Mbps or more; this is a calculation from YouTube’s headroom recommendation, not a guarantee of stability. Test with movement and audio similar to the actual gaming videos, not only a static screen. Check the OBS output and YouTube’s Live Control Room preview, then monitor stream health and audio/video quality while live. The recommended settings and headroom are guidance, not a measurement of what your particular computer or internet connection can sustain.

Schedule and test before the broadcast
YouTube suggests setting up an encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. Use that lead time to make sure the preview appears and to resolve issues before viewers arrive. YouTube Help: Live streaming tips.
- Play every file in the playlist and listen through the beginning and end of each item.
- Confirm the intended order, loop setting, and whether the broadcast should stop or continue after the last video.
- Check the preview for correct framing, audio levels, and visible scene elements.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicator during the test; reduce the bitrate, resolution, or frame rate if the upload cannot hold a stable stream.
- Verify the event’s visibility and start time in YouTube Studio before inviting viewers.
Troubleshooting common problems
