If your YouTube Live promo loop goes silent between clips, first find out whether the pause occurs inside OBS as one video source hands off to another, or whether the stream itself is losing media segments. Check the clip edges and OBS playback setup before changing YouTube’s ingestion settings: those are different kinds of gaps and need different fixes.
First identify where the silence starts
Note the exact moment the audio drops and compare it with the video transition. If it happens at the end or beginning of a particular promo, inspect the local files and how OBS plays them. If the broadcast loses audio or video independently of clip boundaries, check encoder and delivery logs for ingestion failures.
In OBS, identify which playback arrangement you use:
- Separate Media Sources: each video is its own source, with OBS switching between them.
- VLC Video playlist: OBS plays a list through VLC.
- Media Playlist Source plugin: a plugin manages the playlist and transitions.
- One pre-rendered file: the sequence and its transitions are already assembled into a continuous video.
The controls and likely failure points differ by arrangement. OBS documents looping individual Media Sources separately from looping a VLC playlist, and does not promise gapless audio when distinct sources hand off.

Check the playback method you use
Separate OBS Media Sources
Open each source’s properties and check its Loop setting if you expect that individual file to repeat. Loop repeats that file; it does not establish that audio will be gapless when OBS switches to a different source.
- Listen to the last seconds of each file and the first seconds of the next. Look for encoded silence, a quiet fade, or an edit that leaves a pause.
- Make a local OBS recording that includes the transition. Listen to it before changing live-stream settings.
- If the files have clean edges but the recording still pauses at the handoff, test another playback arrangement, such as a VLC playlist or a single rendered file.
OBS VLC Video playlist
OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. In the source settings, check the playlist and playback controls:

- Enable Loop Playlist if the list should repeat.
- Check shuffle behavior if promos must play in a fixed order.
- Confirm the intended Audio Track is selected.
- Review Visibility Behaviour so that hiding or showing the source does not unexpectedly stop or restart playback.
Record and listen to a local transition after changing a setting. The presence of a playlist loop control is not a guarantee that every file handoff will be gapless.
OBS Media Playlist Source plugin
If a plugin handles playback, check its installed version and release notes before assuming a clip or YouTube issue. The OBS Media Playlist Source update history includes fixes for continuing to the next item after a transition and for looping a path that is the same as the previous item. The notes state that versions from 0.1.0 onward require OBS 31; verify compatibility against the version you actually installed.

One rendered continuous file
If transitions between sources remain troublesome, assemble the promos in an editor and export them as one continuous file. This moves the handoffs into the edit rather than asking OBS to switch sources. It can remove source-switching as a cause, but it cannot remove silence already present in the edits or export.
Test the exported file in OBS before using it in the live loop. OBS’s format guidance covers compatible containers and codecs and notes that fragmented MP4 or MOV can suit common editing software; it does not endorse a particular editor or guarantee that rendering one file fixes every gap.

Tell a source-transition gap from a YouTube ingestion gap
A pause that aligns with a local clip boundary points first to the file, source settings, or playback software. A delivery problem is a different branch: YouTube’s DASH encoder guidance says a failed media-segment PUT request corresponds to a gap in the video stream and recommends retry logic. Look for failed segment uploads in encoder or delivery logs before treating that as the explanation for silence between promos.
YouTube’s HLS setup guidance describes segmented ingestion and protocol requirements, not how OBS transitions between local clips. Its audio and segment recommendations apply to HLS ingestion—not as a cure for a pause at a source handoff:

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- HLS segment duration: 1–4 seconds.
- Recommended audio sample rate: 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1.
- Recommended audio bitrate: 128 Kbps for stereo or 384 Kbps for 5.1.
For DASH ingestion, Google for Developers recommends media segments between 1 and 5 seconds as a performance and latency tradeoff. Those segment durations concern encoder delivery, not the interval between promo files.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare the practical loop options
| Playback arrangement | Where transitions happen | Controls and dependencies | Useful first test |
|---|---|---|---|
| Separate Media Sources | OBS switches between individual files. | Per-file Loop; no documented guarantee of gapless audio between distinct sources. | Inspect file edges and record a local handoff. |
| VLC Video playlist | Playlist playback handles the sequence in OBS. | Loop Playlist, shuffle, Visibility Behaviour, and Audio Track; VLC must be installed, with matching 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. | Check loop, order, track, and visibility settings, then record a transition. |
| Media Playlist Source plugin | The plugin manages the playlist and transitions. | Depends on plugin version; update notes include transition-continuation and repeated-path fixes. Versions from 0.1.0 onward require OBS 31 according to the notes. | Compare installed version and OBS compatibility with the plugin’s release notes. |
| One rendered continuous file | Transitions are in the edited file, not between OBS sources. | Requires preparing and exporting the sequence; OBS format guidance discusses compatible containers and codecs. | Listen to the export around each edit, then test it as one OBS source. |
The available documentation does not establish that any one arrangement is universally gapless. Choose based on whether you need to update individual promos often, rely on playlist controls, or prefer to edit the entire sequence as one file.
Troubleshoot common symptoms
- Silence always occurs at the same clip boundary: inspect the outgoing file’s ending and incoming file’s opening for silence or a fade; confirm the selected audio track and record the transition locally.
- A VLC playlist pauses or behaves unexpectedly after hiding the scene: review Visibility Behaviour, then check the playlist loop and track settings.
- The next plugin item does not start, or a repeated item fails: check the plugin version history for transition-continuation or repeated-path fixes, and verify the OBS 31 requirement noted for versions from 0.1.0 onward.
- Audio or video gaps do not align with clip changes: inspect encoder or delivery logs for failed media-segment uploads; a failed DASH segment PUT is documented as a cause of a stream gap.
- The sequence still contains silence as one file: revisit the edits and export. Rendering one file eliminates source handoffs, not pauses embedded in the content.
