The playlist lives in the playout system—not in YouTube’s live feed—so you can change episode order while keeping one continuous broadcast running.
Before you start: confirm rights and channel readiness
Use only cartoon episodes you own or have permission to broadcast. Check that permission covers public live streaming and includes music, clips, and any other material embedded in the episodes. Having a copy of a video does not by itself establish streaming rights.
If this is your channel’s first live stream, enable live streaming and verify that the channel is ready before announcing a launch. YouTube Help says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. YouTube also supports scheduling a stream so viewers can set a reminder.
Choose how to play the episodes
The playout system controls which file plays next and sends the resulting audio-video feed to YouTube. Choose a workflow based on who will maintain it and what needs to keep running:

Compare options by where the files run, playlist controls, recovery after interruption, monitoring, file compatibility, operator workload, and total cost. No one approach is best for every channel.
Set up a rotating playlist and continuous broadcast
- Prepare the episode files. Put authorized episodes in an order that makes sense for your audience. Check that the files play correctly in your chosen encoder or service, including their audio and transitions.
- Choose the rotation pattern. Configure the playout system to play episodes consecutively. Decide whether to repeat one playlist, alternate episode blocks, or insert short interstitials. These are playlist decisions managed by the encoder or service, not YouTube rotation controls.
- Create or schedule the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder or cloud service. The key is a credential that lets the encoder connect to YouTube: keep it private and reset it if it is compromised.
- Set the viewing and lifecycle behavior. Decide whether to enable DVR, which lets viewers pause and rewind, and whether auto-start or auto-stop should let the encoder control when the stream starts or stops. Test the chosen lifecycle before promoting a continuous channel.
- Start the playout and verify it. Confirm YouTube is receiving the feed, check stream health, and watch an episode transition. Verify the next episode is the one you expect and that audio and video continue through the change.
- Maintain the rotation. Reorder or replace files in the playout system when needed, then verify the next transition. Avoid ending the continuous broadcast merely to change the file order unless your chosen system requires it.
Understand the YouTube broadcast and stream distinction
YouTube treats the viewer-facing live event and the incoming audiovisual feed as separate objects. In YouTube’s API terminology, a liveBroadcast is the event or video viewers watch, while a liveStream is the feed sent to YouTube. A stream can be reused for broadcasts at different times, and YouTube documents keeping one 24/7 broadcast live while a second broadcast represents a subset of the same continuing feed.

For a continuous cartoon channel, the feed changes as episodes rotate; the broadcast can remain live. If you want a separate watch page or scheduled event for each episode, that is a different broadcast design. The encoder or service still manages the episode playback schedule. YouTube’s API documentation, current to September 14, 2026, describes this relationship and the continuous-broadcast example: Understanding Broadcasts and Streams.
Monitor the stream and troubleshoot interruptions
A 24/7 playlist still needs operational checks. Watch YouTube’s incoming stream health and confirm the episode sequence and transitions rather than assuming that an uninterrupted feed will recover perfectly by itself.

- YouTube is not receiving video: Check that the encoder is running and connected to the correct stream URL and key. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder with the new key.
- The wrong episode plays next: Check the playlist order and repeat or block settings in the playout system; YouTube receives the feed but does not control that sequence.
- The stream ends when the encoder stops: Review auto-stop and the encoder’s restart behavior. Test the full stream lifecycle before relying on it for a continuous channel.
- A transition has a gap or playback problem: Test the files and playlist in the chosen system, then monitor a transition on YouTube. File compatibility and gapless playback depend on the playout system.
- The broadcast page and feed do not match your plan: Check whether you need one continuous broadcast or separate scheduled events. Those are broadcast-design choices, distinct from changing the episode playlist.
