For 1080p60 gaming, start at 17 Mbps with H.264 or 12 Mbps with AV1/H.265; for 1440p60, start at 34 Mbps with H.264 or 24 Mbps with AV1/H.265. These are YouTube’s live-ingest recommendations, not upload-video settings. Use constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and a stable upload connection. One important limit: YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive, so a single 24-hour broadcast is not a dependable way to create a complete VOD.
Choose a YouTube live bitrate for your resolution and codec
Match the live bitrate to both the video format and the ingest codec. The figures below are YouTube’s recommended live-ingest values for the listed resolutions and frame rates, not guarantees of visual quality. YouTube’s guidance was current when retrieved in 2026. YouTube also lists minimum values, but these are floors rather than targets: at 1080p60, the minimum is 6 Mbps for H.264 and 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265; at 1440p60, it is 8 Mbps and 6 Mbps respectively. Do not confuse these live figures with YouTube’s separate SDR video-upload recommendations, which list 12 Mbps for 1080p high frame rate and 24 Mbps for 1440p high frame rate.
What to choose for gaming
Use the row that matches what you actually send to YouTube. Fast camera pans, detailed textures, particle effects, and rapid motion can expose compression more than static scenes, so test with representative gameplay rather than a menu screen. There is no single bitrate that compensates for every codec, resolution, frame rate, game, or unstable connection.

If the encoder cannot reliably sustain the recommended value, first investigate connection stability and encoder capacity. A bitrate that repeatedly fluctuates or drops frames is not a useful target merely because it matches the table.
Configure the encoder for YouTube ingest
YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. The settings below are platform guidance; the names and exact menus vary by encoder software or hardware.

Set the output resolution, frame rate, and codec first, then enter the matching bitrate. An encoder menu may label the keyframe interval in frames rather than seconds; at 60 fps, a two-second interval corresponds to 120 frames. Confirm the units shown by your encoder before entering a value.
Test the stream before leaving it unattended
A 24/7 setup needs ongoing checks, not just a successful first connection. YouTube recommends testing before going live, monitoring stream health and its messages, checking audio and video quality, and verifying that a local archive file continues to grow. - Run an upload-speed test. Check the connection you will actually use for the stream. Judge whether it can sustain the selected bitrate, not just reach it briefly.
- Run a representative test stream. Include gameplay with motion similar to the material you plan to loop, and check both audio and video.
- Watch YouTube stream health and messages. Resolve warnings or instability before treating the setup as unattended.
- Check the local recording. If recording a backup, confirm that the file is being created and its size is increasing; periodically verify that the recording is playable.
- Keep monitoring during operation. A connection, encoder, or power issue can arise after the initial test, so plan how you will notice and address it.
Plan the VOD separately from the 24/7 broadcast
Bitrate does not solve YouTube’s archive-duration limitation. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Read YouTube’s archive live streams guidance. A continuous 24-hour stream therefore cannot be assumed to produce a complete platform VOD.
If preserving a complete replay matters, record locally as a backup and decide how that footage will be retained or published. YouTube recommends recording a local archive, but does not prescribe a drive type or capacity. An external SSD or hard drive can hold the recording; choose capacity based on your recording settings and duration, and check that the destination has room before starting. Do not assume that a higher bitrate, resolution, or encoder setting removes the archive risk.

Troubleshoot common bitrate and 24/7 stream problems
- YouTube reports stream-health problems or the stream drops frames: Check whether the connection can sustain the selected bitrate and whether the encoder is overloaded. Repeat a test under representative gameplay conditions and adjust the output only after checking the source of instability.
- The picture looks blocky during fast gameplay: Confirm that resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate match the intended YouTube live-ingest row. Test motion-heavy footage; a static test scene may conceal the issue.
- The encoder accepts the stream but the archive is incomplete or missing: Check stream duration. A broadcast exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all, so use a local recording and a separate plan for the VOD.
- The local backup stops growing: Check the recording destination, available capacity, and whether the encoder is still recording. Verify the resulting file rather than relying only on its presence.
- The stream looked healthy at launch but later fails: Recheck stream-health messages, network stability, and recording status. A successful initial test does not establish that a long-running setup will remain healthy indefinitely.
