If OBS stops during a 24/7 devotional stream, first check what actually stopped: OBS may have crashed or frozen, the connection to YouTube may have dropped while OBS stayed open, or YouTube may have stopped receiving or showing the feed. Each has a different fix. Start by checking OBS’s status and YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room; don’t assume a network setting is the cause until you know which symptom occurred.
Identify what stopped
At the time of the interruption, note whether OBS is still open and responsive, whether its status mentions reconnecting or dropped frames, and whether YouTube Studio still shows an incoming feed. These clues separate an application or encoding problem from a connection problem or a YouTube ingest/configuration issue.
- OBS closed or froze: Treat this as an application or system problem. Record the time and any error message; the connection troubleshooting steps below won’t establish why the application crashed.
- OBS stayed open but showed dropped frames or reconnecting: Investigate the connection between your computer and YouTube’s ingest server. OBS says dropped frames or intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server (OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting, published September 30, 2024).
- OBS stayed connected, but output was choppy or showed “encoding overloaded”: Check whether OBS has enough system and GPU resources to render and encode the stream.
- YouTube stopped receiving or accepting the feed: Check the stream URL and key in both YouTube Studio and OBS, along with YouTube’s start/stop settings.
The symptoms alone cannot diagnose a particular failure. Keep a note of what OBS and YouTube showed before changing settings.
If OBS is open but the stream disconnects
Test bitrate, ingest server, and network connection
- Check your configured bitrate against stable upload speed. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guarantee. The appropriate bitrate depends on the upload speed your connection can sustain and the streaming service’s limits. If the stream is unstable, lower the bitrate and see whether the connection holds.
- Try a different ingest server if one is available. This is a diagnostic test for the route to the server, not proof that the original server was at fault.
- Test over Ethernet if the computer is on Wi-Fi. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. Compare results before treating a cable or network change as a permanent fix.
OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate; enough dropped frames can lead to disconnection. Its guide also suggests testing another streaming service to help isolate a service-specific issue, if that is practical for your setup.

Check possible network interference
If bitrate, server, and a wired test do not resolve the interruptions, check for VPN interference, firewall or antivirus restrictions, bundled network-optimization utilities, outdated network drivers, router or modem problems, and faulty cables or other network hardware. Change one item at a time where possible so you can tell whether the result changes. OBS advises contacting your internet service provider if its troubleshooting steps do not resolve the connection problem.

- Try enabling Network Optimizations and TCP pacing.
- Leave Bind to IP at Default.
- Try IPv4 Only only if needed. If it makes no difference, restore the default IPv4/IPv6 setting.
- Dynamic bitrate adjustment is a fallback when the underlying connection problem cannot be fixed. OBS warns that it does not repair the root cause and may reduce video quality.

If OBS reports encoding overload or the video is choppy
This points to a different path from a network disconnect. OBS needs GPU resources to composite and render scenes; if that work overwhelms available resources, output can become choppy or OBS can report “encoding overloaded.” The OBS encoding performance guide recommends reducing the work OBS has to do.

- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator. Treat this as an initial troubleshooting check, not a confirmed diagnosis.
- Reduce competing GPU-heavy activity. Close or reduce demanding applications while OBS is streaming.
- Reduce output resolution or frame rate if the system cannot sustain the current settings.
- Simplify scenes and sources. Check browser sources, filters, and other components that add rendering work; remove or simplify what the stream does not need.
These changes target rendering and encoding overload. They are not a substitute for network troubleshooting when OBS reports dropped frames or disconnects.
If YouTube rejects the feed or the stream ends unexpectedly
- Compare the stream URL and key. Check the values in the encoder against the current stream details in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. The stream key is the credential information YouTube uses to accept the encoder feed.
- Reset a compromised key. YouTube says a channel owner or manager can reset the key in Live Control Room. After resetting it, update the encoder with the new key.
- Check auto-start and auto-stop. YouTube’s settings determine whether streaming can be started or stopped from the encoder. Confirm they match the way you intend to run the broadcast.
Do not share a stream key publicly; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to the channel. For YouTube’s current setup details, use its live encoder settings guidance.

Keep a useful record for diagnosis
If the stream stops again, capture these details before changing several things at once:
- Time of the interruption and whether OBS remained open, froze, or closed.
- OBS status text or error message, including any dropped-frame or encoding-overload indication.
- Whether YouTube Studio still showed an incoming feed.
- Network type (Wi-Fi or wired) and configured bitrate.
- Recent changes to OBS, drivers, VPN, firewall/security software, or network equipment.
- The OBS log from the affected session.
Without the log, operating system, OBS version, platform details, and exact message, it is not possible to identify the cause of a specific failure confidently.
