YouTube Gaming VOD Rerun Service vs. OBS on a VPS

For continuously replaying prerecorded gaming videos on YouTube, a managed rerun service is usually the simpler workflow; OBS on a VPS is the better fit when you need control over scenes, plugins, inputs, or server configuration and are willing to operate it yourself. Neither option is universally cheaper or more reliable: compare a current VPS quote with a service’s actual limits, then include the time you will spend setting up and monitoring the stream.

What you are comparing

A gaming VOD rerun takes videos you have already recorded and sends them to YouTube as a live encoder feed. It is different from broadcasting a live game session: the source material is prerecorded, while the channel’s stream remains live as the videos play.

A managed rerun service supplies a hosted playback or OBS environment and tools for operating it. OBS on a VPS means renting a virtual server, installing and configuring OBS, and managing the stream yourself. A VPS is not a specific OBS product or a guaranteed encoding configuration; what it can handle depends on the server’s resources, encoder, network allowance, and workload.

Which option fits your needs?

Option Best fit Control and operation Limits to check Cost basis
StreamNeo A YouTube channel that needs uploaded videos played in a continuous cloud stream. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud handles looping; your computer does not have to stay on. YouTube only; uploaded videos rather than a live camera feed. One always-on stream per slot, with 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots. One flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps; the same product on every plan, with billing duration changing.
Cloud-OBS Someone who wants a configured cloud OBS playlist with browser controls and remote desktop access. The provider describes onboarding assistance, ordered file playback, and browser pause, resume, and skip controls. Remote desktop access lets you review OBS scenes and settings. The provider’s page accessed in 2026 lists 1080p at 30 FPS, 180 GB of video storage, and one configured destination. The first release does not list RTMP input. Confirm current availability and terms with the provider. The provider’s page accessed in 2026 lists €34.99/month for the first three months, then €49.99/month thereafter. It describes the launch offer as limited to the first three activations; terms and availability can change.
OBS on a VPS An operator who needs a custom OBS session, scenes, plugins, inputs, or a tailored server setup. You choose and configure the server and OBS workflow, and take responsibility for keeping it running, checking the feed, and recovering from interruptions. Encoding capacity and outbound bandwidth depend on the specific VPS configuration and provider. No general 1080p60 capability follows from the term “VPS.” Get a current provider quote and account for compute, storage, bandwidth, possible GPU or encoding needs, and operator time. No like-for-like VPS price is established here.

StreamNeo is the first service to consider for this specific uploaded-video use case: it runs the YouTube loop in the cloud, accepts uploads up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. The Cloud-OBS details above are one vendor’s stated plan, not limits that should be assumed for every managed service.

When a managed rerun service makes sense

You want playlist playback without operating a server

A hosted service can remove the need to keep a local computer online for playback. Check how it handles ordering, skipping, pausing, storage, supported formats, output quality, destinations, and stream recovery. These details differ by provider; do not infer them from the label “cloud OBS.”

You can work within the service’s limits

For Cloud-OBS, the provider’s page accessed in 2026 specifies 1080p30 output, 180 GB of storage, and one destination. It also describes remote desktop access and browser playlist controls, but says its first release does not include RTMP input. If your workflow depends on a custom input or output above the listed limit, confirm that the service supports it before paying.

You prefer provider onboarding to server setup

Cloud-OBS says onboarding is handled with the customer. That is a practical difference from self-managing a VPS, not evidence of a measured uptime advantage. The available information does not establish comparative uptime or support burden.

When OBS on a VPS makes sense

You need control of the OBS session

A self-managed OBS setup is more appropriate when your workflow requires specific scenes, plugins, input sources, or custom server-side behavior. You can choose how to configure that environment, but you also own the work of installing it, setting up the playlist or playback source, maintaining the process, and responding when the feed stops.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can verify the server’s actual encoding capacity

Do not select a VPS based on an assumed resolution label. Ask the provider whether the plan supports your chosen encoder and sustained workload, and compare its available outbound capacity with YouTube’s recommendations for your intended frame rate and resolution. CPU or GPU availability, storage, and network allowances vary by configuration.

You are prepared to monitor and recover the stream

A VPS does not automatically provide a complete rerun workflow. Plan how you will detect a stopped OBS process or dropped connection, restart playback, and verify that YouTube is receiving the feed. These are operational responsibilities of the self-managed approach; no cited uptime test establishes how often either route fails.

Use YouTube’s encoder guidance for either route

YouTube Help says encoders can stream gameplay, overlays, and external audio or camera hardware. Its current encoder settings page, accessed in 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate encoding; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not over four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP.

Example target: 1080p60 H.264

YouTube’s current encoder settings page, accessed in 2026, gives 6 Mbps as the minimum and 17 Mbps as the recommended bitrate for 1080p60 H.264. Treat these as YouTube’s published guidance for that format, not a guarantee that every server or connection can sustain the stream reliably. YouTube also recommends testing upload bitrate and choosing quality that matches the available connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Configure the encoder and destination

  1. Choose an output your setup can sustain. Match resolution and frame rate to the source and the encoding capacity of the chosen service or VPS. Compare the output and network allowance with YouTube’s published guidance.
  2. Use the appropriate codec and bitrate mode. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 and recommends constant bitrate encoding. For 1080p60 H.264, its page accessed in 2026 specifies a 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended bitrate.
  3. Set keyframes and protocol. Use a two-second keyframe interval as YouTube’s recommendation and do not exceed four seconds. Prefer RTMPS where available.
  4. Connect the stream key securely. Use the stream key associated with the intended YouTube stream, and do not share it publicly: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to that destination. Follow the service or OBS interface’s current instructions for entering it.
  5. Test the feed before relying on a long run. Confirm YouTube receives video and audio at the chosen quality, then verify playback and network stability. A successful initial connection does not establish that the stream will remain uninterrupted.

YouTube’s live-stream documentation states a limit of ten active streams per channel and three active streams per stream key. These are platform limits, not a way to infer that a particular server can encode that many feeds.

Costs: compare the whole workflow, not just the headline price

Managed service charges

Cloud-OBS’s vendor page accessed in 2026 lists €34.99/month for the first three months and €49.99/month thereafter. It describes the introductory offer as limited to the first three activations and says there is no lock-in; confirm current terms and availability directly with the provider. The figures are that provider’s stated charges, not a general price for rerun services.

StreamNeo charges by slot and billing duration, with the same product on every plan:

  • Daily: $0.99 per day
  • Weekly: $2.99 per week
  • Monthly: $9.99 per month
  • 6 months: $49.99 for 6 months

VPS total cost

There is no single VPS total to compare without a provider and configuration. Add the server rental, storage, outbound bandwidth, any GPU or encoding requirements, and the time needed to configure and monitor OBS. A low compute quote may not be useful if it cannot sustain the encoding workload or network output you need.

Content and YouTube policy still apply

Using an encoder or an always-on service does not exempt a stream from YouTube’s rules. YouTube Help says all live content must follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. You remain responsible for rights to the gameplay footage, music, overlays, and other material in the VODs. A technically accepted continuous feed does not establish that its content is permitted or eligible for monetization. StreamNeo’s platform guide, dated July 26, 2026, likewise distinguishes technical streaming from copyright, spam, and monetization requirements.

Cloud-OBS also states that the channel owner remains responsible for content and rights, including music, and that continuous streaming does not guarantee audience or visibility. Replaying VODs is a distribution method, not a promise of discovery, viewers, or revenue.

A practical decision

  • Choose a managed rerun service if your main requirement is playlist playback and you would rather not keep OBS and a server operating yourself. Verify its storage, output quality, destinations, inputs, controls, recovery behavior, and current terms.
  • Choose OBS on a VPS if scene-level or server-level control matters enough to justify setup, monitoring, and recovery work. Confirm encoding capacity and bandwidth against YouTube’s recommendations before committing.
  • Do not choose on a blanket claim that one route is cheaper or more reliable. The available figures do not provide a comparable VPS quote or an independent uptime comparison.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is built for uploaded-video loops on YouTube: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream; and the first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
