For 4K 60fps YouTube Live, use HEVC when your encoder supports it over your chosen ingest protocol—especially for HDR or when its lower recommended bitrate helps your connection. YouTube’s current guidance recommends 35 Mbps for AV1/H.265 (HEVC) and 50 Mbps for H.264 at 2160p60. Choose H.264 if it is the compatible or more reliable option in your setup, and test the complete stream before an event.

What changes between H.264 and HEVC at 4K60?

The main practical differences in YouTube’s published settings are the recommended ingest bitrate and HDR support. YouTube accepts both H.264 and H.265 (HEVC) for live streaming over RTMP/RTMPS. Its current settings guide, verified October 3, 2026, recommends 50 Mbps for H.264 and 35 Mbps for AV1/H.265 at 2160p60. These are recommended encoder settings—not a guarantee that HEVC will look better, or that every encoder and network can deliver a stable stream at those rates.

Consideration H.264 HEVC (H.265)
YouTube RTMP/RTMPS support Supported Supported
YouTube recommended bitrate at 2160p60 50 Mbps 35 Mbps (listed as AV1/H.265)
HDR over RTMP/RTMPS Not the codec YouTube recommends for HDR YouTube recommends H.265/HEVC; HDR uses 10-bit
SDR color guidance Rec. 709, 8-bit Rec. 709, 8-bit

Source for YouTube support, bitrate, frame-rate and color guidance: YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Which codec should you choose?

Choose HEVC when the whole chain supports it

HEVC is the stronger starting choice if your encoder supports H.265 on the protocol you plan to use. It is particularly relevant for HDR, for which YouTube recommends HEVC over RTMP(S), and for 4K60 when a 35 Mbps recommended bitrate is more practical than H.264’s 50 Mbps recommendation. The lower figure does not remove the need for dependable upload capacity and real-world testing.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose H.264 when compatibility or reliability comes first

Use H.264 if your encoder, capture workflow, or selected ingest route does not support HEVC, or if it is the configuration you have already confirmed to work reliably. Do not switch codecs shortly before an important broadcast without testing the entire production chain.

Do not infer support from a codec label alone

Codec support can depend on the streaming protocol. For example, Blackmagic Design’s Streaming Encoder 4K specifications list RTMP streaming in H.264 and SRT streaming in H.264/H.265. Its SRT HEVC capability does not establish RTMP HEVC support. Check the exact model, firmware and protocol combination in the manufacturer’s specifications before planning a stream: Blackmagic Streaming Encoder 4K technical specifications.

Set up YouTube’s RTMP or RTMPS stream correctly

YouTube’s live encoder recommendations apply to RTMP/RTMPS. For that route, YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a 2-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed 4 seconds. Select the codec and settings in your encoder, then use the stream key and server details provided in YouTube Live Control Room. Keep your stream key private.

  1. Confirm the path: verify that your encoder supports the codec over RTMPS (or the selected YouTube ingest route), not merely that it can encode that codec in some other mode.
  2. Set the output: choose 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps if that matches your source and production, select H.264 or HEVC, and set CBR. For the YouTube 2160p60 recommendations, set 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for HEVC.
  3. Set keyframes: use a 2-second interval and do not exceed 4 seconds, as YouTube recommends.
  4. Check color and bit depth: for SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit. For HDR, use an HEVC workflow with 10-bit output and ensure the encoder’s color configuration and metadata match the source.
  5. Connect and test: enter the current YouTube stream key and server information in the encoder, then start a private or unlisted test. Check YouTube’s stream health and confirm the received resolution, frame rate, audio and color appearance.

YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion resembling the real event and selecting settings reliable for the available connection. Leave upload headroom rather than treating the recommended video bitrate as the only traffic on the connection. At 4K, YouTube does not offer its “improve for low latency” option; the stream uses normal latency. Details: YouTube’s live encoder settings guide.

When using HLS, follow a different checklist

Do not copy RTMP/RTMPS settings directly to HLS. YouTube’s HLS ingestion documentation specifies a separate set of requirements: audio and video must be muxed in M2TS; supported video codecs include H.264 and HEVC up to 60 fps; closed GOP is required; and audio must be AAC, with a single audio track. HDR is supported with HEVC subject to additional color-format and metadata requirements.

Check the complete HLS requirements before configuring an encoder or contribution workflow: YouTube Live HLS ingestion guide.

Test quality and stability before the broadcast

A codec name and bitrate cannot predict how a particular encoder will handle your game footage, camera feed, overlays or network. Test representative gameplay or other fast motion, scene changes, overlays and audio. Watch for dropped frames, buffering, audio sync problems, unexpected color shifts and encoder overload. If problems appear, change one variable at a time—such as bitrate, resolution or frame rate—and repeat the test, rather than changing several settings at once.

  • Motion and detail: include the fastest movement and most detailed scenes expected in the broadcast.
  • Network: test over the same connection and route you intend to use; a speed test alone cannot prove sustained stream stability.
  • Color: check that SDR appears as expected and, for HDR, that the encoder’s bit depth and metadata match the source.
  • Audio: verify levels, channel configuration and sync from the viewer’s perspective.
  • Health monitoring: use YouTube’s stream health information during the test and resolve warnings before the event.

Common problems and fixes

The encoder does not offer HEVC for the selected route

Check the device specifications for the exact codec/protocol combination and verify any relevant firmware or software settings. A device may support HEVC for SRT but only H.264 for RTMP. If HEVC is unavailable over your YouTube route, use a supported H.264 configuration rather than assuming a different protocol’s capability carries over.

The stream drops frames or YouTube reports connection trouble

Compare the configured bitrate with sustained upload capacity and leave headroom for other network traffic. Reduce bitrate, resolution or frame rate and retest if the connection cannot sustain the chosen settings. YouTube’s 35 Mbps and 50 Mbps figures are recommendations for 2160p60, not minimums that every connection can safely maintain.

HDR looks washed out or has incorrect colors

Confirm that the source, encoder output and metadata agree on HDR, and that the HEVC workflow uses the required 10-bit settings. If the production is SDR, use YouTube’s listed Rec. 709, 8-bit guidance rather than applying HDR settings to it.

Picture quality does not improve after switching to HEVC

HEVC’s lower recommended bitrate is not proof of a universal visual-quality advantage. Compare matched, representative tests with your actual encoder and content; confirm that the encoder is genuinely outputting the intended codec and settings.

Costs and the option to replace encoder hardware

If your existing equipment cannot produce the required codec and protocol combination, a dedicated encoder is one possible hardware route. TBS describes its TBS2802 as a dual-channel 4K60 HDMI encoder supporting H.264/HEVC and streaming to YouTube Live or RTMP/RTMPS servers. That is the manufacturer’s specification, not an independent test; confirm current compatibility and availability with the manufacturer before buying. Product details: TBS2802 encoder.
