How Much Bandwidth Does a 24/7 Children’s Video Stream Use?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no fixed data total for a 24/7 children’s video stream: it depends chiefly on the stream’s average bitrate. As a practical estimate, every 1 Mbps of continuous video uses about 10.8 GB per day, or 324 GB in a 30-day month, for one viewer. A 2 Mbps stream therefore uses about 21.6 GB per day and 648 GB per month. These are decimal-GB calculations, before delivery overhead and variation.

Estimate data use from the stream’s average bitrate

Use the stream’s average bitrate—not its audience label or resolution alone—to estimate how much one viewer receives. The calculation assumes that bitrate stays constant and playback continues without interruption:

  • Per hour: bitrate in Mbps × 0.45 = approximate GB
  • Per 24-hour day: bitrate in Mbps × 10.8 = approximate GB
  • Per 30-day month: bitrate in Mbps × 324 = approximate GB

The conversion uses decimal gigabytes: 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual totals can differ because of variable bitrate, audio, delivery-protocol overhead, player behavior, and interruptions. AWS’s implementation guide offers bitrate-to-data conversion guidance: Bitrate and storage.

Average stream bitrate Approx. per hour Approx. per 24-hour day Approx. 30-day month
446 Kbps (0.446 Mbps) 0.20 GB 4.82 GB 144.5 GB
1 Mbps 0.45 GB 10.8 GB 324 GB
2 Mbps 0.90 GB 21.6 GB 648 GB
5 Mbps 2.25 GB 54 GB 1,620 GB (1.62 TB decimal)

The 446 Kbps example is Livestream Producer’s “Normal” stereo preset, not a recommendation for children’s video. The same provider lists 2,632 Kbps for its “High+Medium+Mobile” stereo preset and notes that average bitrate varies with content movement. Those presets illustrate how much encoding choices can change the estimate; they do not establish a typical bitrate for children’s streams. See Livestream Producer support.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Why resolution alone cannot give an exact total

A resolution label is not a data-use measurement. Encoding, playback device, service settings, and the content itself affect the amount delivered. There is no universal children’s-video bitrate established here, so for an exact estimate look for the stream’s bitrate or measure its data use on the device and service that will play it.

Published service figures are examples, not universal averages

Providers publish estimates for their own services and conditions. Disney+ reports approximately 0.7 GB per hour for SD on TV-connected devices, 2 GB per hour for 1080p, and 7.7 GB per hour for 4K UHD and HDR. Its figures also vary by device and setting. See the Disney+ data usage guidance.

Fubo estimates minimum live-programming use of 1.21 GB per hour at 480p, 1.67 GB at 720p, 2.03 GB at 1080p, and 7.11 GB at 4K. Fubo says actual usage varies with connection, device, channel or program, and whether playback is live, on demand, or DVR; it also notes live programming may use more data than on-demand viewing. See Fubo’s data-use estimates.

If those hourly estimates were repeated continuously for 30 days, the arithmetic would be very large: for example, Fubo’s stated 720p minimum estimate would amount to about 1,202 GB, and Disney+’s 1080p estimate to about 1,440 GB. These are extrapolations from each provider’s hourly figure, not universal estimates for all 720p or 1080p streams.

Bandwidth, bitrate, and monthly data are different

Bitrate is the rate at which the stream sends data. Bandwidth or connection speed is the capacity available on a network. Data use is the volume accumulated over time. A speed recommendation does not directly state a monthly data allowance or consumption.

For example, Netflix recommends connection speeds of 3 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p, and 15 Mbps for 4K. These are connection-speed recommendations, not claims about how many gigabytes a viewer will use in a month. See Netflix’s internet connection speed recommendations.

One viewer’s use is not the broadcaster’s total

The calculations above estimate data received by one viewer watching one rendition continuously. A broadcaster’s total outbound delivery depends on how many people watch at the same time and the quality or bitrate each receives. Vimeo identifies viewer count, average watch time, and viewing quality or bitrate as inputs to a bandwidth estimate; see Vimeo’s bandwidth calculation guidance. Do not multiply a viewer’s monthly estimate by 24 again: the 24-hour duration is already included.

If you are encoding and sending a live stream from your own connection, allow for upload headroom. Livestream Producer recommends available upload speed at least twice the total stream bitrate to allow for normal fluctuations. That is guidance for a stable broadcast connection, not a claim that each viewer consumes twice the stream’s bitrate.

How to get a closer estimate for a particular stream

  1. Find the average bitrate. Check the encoder or service’s stream details if available. Use the average, not just a peak or a recommended internet speed.
  2. Choose the viewing case. Identify the rendition and device being used. If the provider gives an hourly data estimate for that exact service and mode, use it as an illustration specific to those conditions.
  3. Apply the duration. Multiply Mbps by 10.8 for a 24-hour day or by 324 for a 30-day month. For intermittent viewing, use the actual hours watched instead of 24 hours a day.
  4. Scale broadcaster delivery separately. Estimate concurrent viewers and the quality each receives. A single-viewer figure is not the broadcaster’s audience-wide total.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the stream is a prerecorded playlist going live on YouTube, StreamNeo keeps it running from the cloud: upload your video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.
