If YouTube Live Control Room stays on “Checking,” first read the full stream status and any error message, then verify that your encoder is sending a healthy output. YouTube’s help pages explain stream-health errors and general troubleshooting, but do not document a dedicated “stuck on checking” state or a guaranteed fix for it. Treat the label as a symptom, not a diagnosis.
1. Read the status and error details in Live Control Room
Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and inspect the complete stream status, health indicator, and any accompanying error text. YouTube says stream status includes specific errors and instructions. Health messages can carry timestamps, and YouTube distinguishes critical errors from moderate ones. Record the exact wording and when it appeared. The official documentation reviewed does not state how long a normal check should take or explain what it means when “Checking” persists. Refreshing the page, restarting the stream, changing the key, or buying hardware is therefore not an established fix for this exact display.
2. Check whether the encoder is actually sending
If you are using an encoder such as OBS or another streaming application, compare its local output with what Live Control Room reports. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder and connection; these checks can help identify a general live-stream problem, though they are not guaranteed to clear a stuck indicator. - Confirm the encoder is running and sending to the intended live event.
- Check the encoder preview or local output for correct picture and sound.
- Look for encoder dashboard warnings or errors, and check whether the computer is under heavy CPU load.
- If you record a local archive, inspect it for dropped frames, freezes, missing audio, or other defects.
- Update the encoder software. If the output still has unexplained problems, YouTube suggests trying another encoder.
If the encoder reports an error starting, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends obtaining a new stream key and updating the encoder. A “Checking” label on its own is not documented as a reason to reset the key. Reset it only when there is a separate startup/key error or reason to believe the key is compromised; resetting requires updating the encoder with the new key. 3. Test the outbound internet connection
If the encoder output looks and sounds healthy, test the connection from the streaming location to the internet. YouTube identifies the outbound connection as a possible source of live-stream problems. If the test shows a connection issue, contact your internet service provider and resolve it before treating the “Checking” label as an interface-only problem. [YouTube Help: Fix streaming issues]

4. Use viewer reports to narrow down where the problem is
Find out whether viewers are seeing the same error and whether they share a network. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance uses the pattern of reports to help distinguish local viewer issues from a broader stream problem. Ask affected viewers what they saw and what they tried, and check whether you can reproduce the error yourself. [YouTube Help: Fix streaming issues]
- One viewer: The problem may be specific to that viewer’s device or internet connection.
- Several viewers on one shared connection: The shared network may be involved.
- Viewers on different connections: The encoder or stream itself may be involved; compare their reports with your encoder output and Live Control Room.
5. Verify encoder settings against YouTube’s current guidance
Check the actual codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate configured in your encoder. YouTube recommends testing ahead of an event and monitoring stream health and messages while live. Its encoder guidance names RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 among the relevant settings, and recommends constant bitrate encoding with a two-second keyframe frequency. These are YouTube-published encoder recommendations, not diagnostic thresholds for a health check that remains on “Checking.” Use the guidance for your chosen codec and output mode rather than changing bitrate at random.
6. Report a persistent problem to YouTube
If the indicator remains stuck after you have checked the stream, encoder, and connection, report the issue to YouTube. The general troubleshooting page advises reporting live-stream problems that continue, but the official pages reviewed do not specify a special escalation route for this exact interface state. - The exact status and error text, plus when the issue began.
- Whether the encoder is running and sending, and the encoder software/version.
- What the local preview or archive shows, along with any encoder errors or CPU-load concerns.
- The result of the outbound connection test.
- Whether affected viewers are on one shared network or different networks, and whether you see the same error.
- The codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate currently configured.
