Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a reliable 24/7 YouTube Live broadcast, use RTMPS, H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), progressive video, and a 2-second keyframe interval; keep the interval at 4 seconds or less. Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to match the content and the upload bandwidth you can sustain, with about 20% bandwidth headroom. There is no single YouTube profile guaranteed to be best for every continuous stream. One crucial limit: a broadcast longer than 12 hours may not be archived by YouTube, so record locally if you need a complete replay.
Recommended baseline settings
YouTube’s encoder values are general recommendations, not a special preset or reliability guarantee for 24/7 broadcasts. For a gaming stream, start with a profile your encoder supports and your connection can sustain; test it with representative gameplay, motion, and audio before leaving it unattended.
| Setting | Recommended starting point | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS | YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Use HLS only when a required capability or encoder workflow calls for it. |
| Video codec | H.264 | A broadly usable choice. YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1 as supported RTMP/RTMPS ingest codecs; match their separate bitrate recommendations. |
| Rate control | CBR | Constant bitrate is YouTube’s recommended rate-control mode. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds. |
| Frame format | Progressive video, square pixels | Use Rec. 709 for SDR color. |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps | Choose 30 or 60 fps according to the content, encoder capacity, and bandwidth available. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3 | YouTube’s advanced guidance lists 128 Kbps for stereo at 44.1 kHz, or 384 Kbps for 5.1 at 48 kHz. |
YouTube automatically detects resolution and frame rate by default. Manual selection requires a custom stream key with manual settings enabled, so avoid overriding detection unless you have a specific reason. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate
The following are YouTube’s published incoming-video bitrate figures, in Mbps. “Minimum” and “recommended” are YouTube’s configuration values, not a promise of quality or a requirement that every stream use the recommended figure. Select the codec column matching your encoder.

| Resolution and frame rate | AV1/H.265 minimum | AV1/H.265 recommended | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 15 Mbps | 7 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 24 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 2160p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 30 Mbps | 11 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 2160p at 60 fps | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
For a comparatively low-motion scene, 1080p30 can be a practical starting point if the encoder and network sustain the recommended bitrate. Fast gameplay, camera movement, or a strong need to preserve detail may justify 1080p60 or a higher resolution, but those choices increase encoding load and bandwidth use. For example, YouTube lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p30 H.264, versus 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended for 1080p60 H.264. The corresponding 1080p30 AV1/H.265 values are 4 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended. These figures come from YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance, accessed in 2026; they are technical configuration recommendations, not performance-study results.
Check sustained upload capacity and test the stream
Measure upload speed on the connection and at the time you expect to stream; download speed alone does not show whether the encoder has enough outbound capacity. YouTube says total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving roughly 20% spare. If you configure a backup feed, budget for the primary feed, backup feed, and that margin together. Other devices and users on a shared network can consume capacity and cause instability. See YouTube’s bandwidth and encoder guidance.

- Configure the encoder. Select RTMPS where supported, the intended codec, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, progressive video, and the chosen resolution, frame rate, and audio settings.
- Run a representative test. Include the kinds of motion and sound the broadcast will actually contain. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and confirm that the picture and audio reach the watch page as expected.
- Check failover if you use it. YouTube recommends testing the backup by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection, then verifying that the player rolls over to the backup.
- Check local recording and playback. Confirm the local archive file is growing, then verify access to the stream or recording from the channel, watch page, and mobile devices.
Settings cannot guarantee continuous uptime. A hardware encoder is optional: YouTube supports both software and hardware encoders, and recommends professional-grade hardware for higher-production-value events, but its guidance does not require dedicated hardware for continuous streaming.
RTMPS or HLS?
RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended choice for standard RTMP-compatible workflows. HLS is a supported alternative for particular encoder and codec workflows, including HDR use cases; it is not an automatic reliability upgrade. Because HLS sends video in segments, it has higher latency. Its documented requirements include TS segments 1–4 seconds long, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. Choose it when your encoder or a needed capability calls for that workflow, rather than solely because the broadcast runs for a long time. See YouTube’s encoder guidance and YouTube’s HLS ingestion requirements.

Plan for archives and DVR beyond 12 hours
A stream can remain live while its replay and rewind behavior is limited. YouTube says it can automatically archive a stream that is less than 12 hours; if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. DVR, which lets viewers pause and rewind a live stream, may also be limited or unavailable on broadcasts longer than 12 hours. These are archive and playback cautions, not encoder bitrate limits. If a complete replay matters, maintain a local recording and plan to publish usable shorter archives separately rather than relying on one uninterrupted day-long YouTube replay. See YouTube’s live stream archive guidance and YouTube’s DVR guidance.
