Those are different configurations: YouTube does not document a universal backup RTMP URL to substitute for the primary one.
What is the difference between the primary URL and a backup URL on YouTube?
The primary stream URL is the ingest destination your encoder sends video to. It is supplied in that stream’s YouTube Live Control Room settings and belongs in the encoder’s server or URL field. The stream key goes in a separate field. YouTube describes stream keys as being like a password and address, so keep the key private and do not treat it as part of the server URL. YouTube’s live stream settings guide explains the URL and key; its encoder setup guide shows where to enter them.
“Backup” has two meanings that should not be mixed up:
- Backup encoder: a second sending setup intended to take over if the primary encoder fails. This is a failover workflow, not a different URL that every encoder should use.
- HLS Backup server URL: a distinct field in YouTube’s HLS ingestion setup. It applies to an HLS stream, not as a general-purpose backup address for RTMP or RTMPS.
Which YouTube RTMP server URL should I use?
Copy the URL from the settings of the exact live stream you are configuring, then paste it into the encoder’s server field. Copy that stream’s key into the encoder’s separate stream-key field. Do not substitute an example address, reuse a value from a different scheduled stream, or paste the key into the URL field.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The available URL depends on the protocol selected for the stream. If you choose RTMPS, use the RTMPS URL provided in Live Control Room and make sure your encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP encrypted over TLS/SSL. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions explain how to retrieve the URL and address connection errors.
Where do I find YouTube’s backup server URL?
The separate Backup server URL is part of YouTube’s HLS setup. It is for a stream configured to use HLS, not a universal secondary RTMP destination. YouTube documents HLS for HDR streams and for codecs unsupported by RTMP. If you need HLS backup ingestion, follow the HLS workflow and copy the Backup server URL shown there; use an encoder compatible with that protocol. See YouTube’s HLS setup instructions and its HDR streaming guidance.

How to configure the URL and key without mixing up protocols
- Open the intended stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Check its stream settings and selected protocol before configuring the encoder.
- Copy the stream URL into the encoder’s server field. Use the value shown for this stream and protocol.
- Copy the stream key into the separate key field. Treat it as sensitive: anyone with the key may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- For RTMPS, verify the protocol and encoder support. The destination should use
rtmps. If an SSL error persists, YouTube says port 443 may be relevant when your encoder lets you specify a port. - For HLS, configure HLS rather than RTMP. Use the HLS Stream URL and, if needed, the distinct HLS Backup server URL from YouTube’s HLS instructions.
- Preview before the event. Check the incoming feed, stream health, and watch page before relying on the setup for a live broadcast.
What “backup encoder” means—and how to test it
A backup encoder is a second sending setup intended to take over if the primary encoder or its connection fails. Do not assume that entering another server address creates encoder failover: YouTube’s documented approach is to configure and test a backup encoder. Its streaming tips recommend a direct test: stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable, then confirm that playback rolls over to the backup encoder.
Run that test before an important broadcast and check that viewers can still watch after the handoff. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth headroom of 20%, expressed as “primary + backup + 20%.” That is a recommendation, not a guarantee or a universal service limit. A backup feed also uses network capacity, so check the requirements of your actual encoders and stream configuration.

Common connection problems and fixes
| Symptom | What to check | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The encoder will not connect | The URL and key may be in the wrong fields, or copied from another stream. | Reopen the intended stream’s Live Control Room settings. Put its stream URL in the server field and its key in the separate key field. |
| An SSL error occurs with RTMPS | The encoder may be using the wrong protocol, may not support RTMPS, or may need a port specified. | Confirm the destination uses rtmps and check encoder support. If available, try port 443 as YouTube’s RTMPS guidance notes. |
| An HLS backup address does not work as an RTMP fallback | The Backup server URL belongs to YouTube’s HLS setup; it is not a general RTMP backup URL. | Use the HLS workflow and a compatible encoder for HLS. For encoder failover, configure a backup encoder and test the handoff. |
| The backup is configured but does not take over | A configured backup is not proof that failover works. | Test by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then verify that playback rolls over. |
| The preview or watch page is not receiving the expected feed | The selected stream, protocol, server URL, or key may not match. | Check the stream’s Live Control Room settings against both encoder fields, then preview and verify the watch page before going live. |
Keep a YouTube video live without running an encoder at home
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream of uploaded recordings rather than a live camera or a manually managed encoder failover, StreamNeo is the cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running with your computer off; it supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not replace an encoder for a live camera feed or change how YouTube’s RTMP, RTMPS, or HLS ingest fields work. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
