You can use a Raspberry Pi as the encoder for a 24/7 YouTube study-room stream: prepare a scene and encoding setup, connect it to YouTube Live with a private stream key, then test and monitor the broadcast. The important caveat is that YouTube’s published settings are ingest recommendations—not proof that any particular Pi model can encode continuously. Test your exact board, software, resolution, frame rate, cooling and network before relying on it.
1. Check that your YouTube channel can go live
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must have had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days to stream. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable live streaming before your planned launch rather than on the day itself. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
2. Create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio

Open YouTube Studio and select Create, then Go live.

Create or schedule a stream and choose the encoder workflow. Set its title, description, visibility and other details for the study-room channel.

In the stream settings, copy the server URL and stream key into your encoder. Keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your stream.

Start the encoder and wait for the Live Control Room preview. Check the picture, audio and stream health before starting the public broadcast in YouTube Studio.

3. Choose a scene and encoding target
Prepare the visual and audio
Decide what viewers should see: for example, a still study-room illustration or a gently changing scene you have the rights to use. Choose audio only if you have permission to stream it. A Pi camera, animation, looping software or particular encoder program is not included in this setup; choose and test the source and software that suit your project.
Use YouTube’s ingest settings as a starting point
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1. For the H.264 settings below, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than four seconds. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that a Pi can encode at the chosen quality.

The values are from YouTube Help’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions; the page does not state a publication year. Pick a resolution and frame rate that your actual scene needs and your tested setup can maintain.

4. Check upload capacity and run a realistic test

YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom above the stream’s total bitrate. For a 5 Mbps target, that means at least 6 Mbps of available upload capacity; for 10 Mbps, at least 12 Mbps. This is headroom guidance, not a promise of stable delivery.

Measure the connection while it is being used as it will be during the broadcast. Other devices and applications sharing the connection can reduce the bandwidth available to the stream.

Test with the actual scene, audio and representative movement. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, then monitor the setup during an extended trial before treating it as ready for continuous use.

Prefer a stable network path. Consider a backup recording or a recovery plan if losing the broadcast would matter; neither makes uninterrupted service guaranteed.
YouTube’s Streaming tips cover upload planning, testing and preview checks. A successful short test does not establish that a particular Raspberry Pi configuration will sustain a 24/7 broadcast.

YouTube Help says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so a single continuous 24/7 broadcast is not guaranteed to become a complete archived video. If you need VODs, plan intentional stream segments under 12 hours and keep a local recording if a separate copy is required. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

6. Clear the music and visuals
YouTube says live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material. If a match is identified and remains in the stream, YouTube may replace the broadcast with a placeholder, interrupt it or terminate it. Even licensed material may require the rights holder to allowlist your channel through Content ID. Use original or properly licensed visuals and audio, and confirm any allowlisting requirements with the rights holder. Read YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.
7. Assemble the Raspberry Pi setup
Plan for a Raspberry Pi board, a power supply appropriate to its model family and compatible boot storage. Raspberry Pi setup guidance identifies power and storage as essential; Raspberry Pi documentation notes that models do not have onboard storage and that connectors differ by model. Check the current requirements for the board you select in Raspberry Pi Foundation’s setup guide and the relevant Raspberry Pi hardware documentation.
No specific Pi model, encoder combination or storage choice is established here as proven for this continuous workload. Confirm compatibility for your board and test the full setup—including encoding, cooling and network—before depending on it.
8. Troubleshoot common failures
