YouTube Live Stream Bitrate Calculator: Settings by Resolution, FPS, and Codec

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose your YouTube Live video bitrate by matching your resolution, frame rate, and encoder codec in the table below. The figures are YouTube’s live-ingestion recommendations—not settings for uploading a finished video. Then make sure your upload connection can sustain the video bitrate plus audio and network headroom.

YouTube Live bitrate calculator

Find your stream’s resolution and frame rate, then use the column for the codec your encoder sends to YouTube. Each cell gives the minimum and recommended video bitrate in megabits per second (Mbps). YouTube’s recommendations vary by codec, so a single bitrate for a resolution can be misleading.

Resolution and frame rate AV1/H.265 minimum AV1/H.265 recommended H.264 minimum H.264 recommended
2160p (4K), 60 fps 10 Mbps 35 Mbps 14 Mbps 50 Mbps
2160p (4K), 30 fps 8 Mbps 30 Mbps 11 Mbps 42 Mbps
1440p, 60 fps 6 Mbps 24 Mbps 8 Mbps 34 Mbps
1440p, 30 fps 5 Mbps 15 Mbps 7 Mbps 21 Mbps
1080p, 60 fps 4 Mbps 12 Mbps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p, 30 fps 4 Mbps 10 Mbps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p, 60 fps 2 Mbps 6 Mbps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p, 30 fps 2 Mbps 6 Mbps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
480p, 30 fps 0.3 Mbps 3 Mbps 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
360p, 30 fps 0.3 Mbps 3 Mbps 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps

These are YouTube Help’s recommended live video-ingestion settings. For example, at 1080p60 the recommendation is 17 Mbps for H.264 or 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265; at 1080p30 it is 14 Mbps or 10 Mbps, respectively. Use the recommendation for your actual ingest codec rather than mixing columns.

How much upload speed do you need?

The table gives video bitrate only. Your connection must also carry audio and other stream traffic. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth unused as headroom; when sending a backup stream, account for the primary and backup streams together, then leave that margin. Upload capacity—not the usually higher download speed—is the relevant measure, and other people or devices sharing the network can reduce what is available to your encoder.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For a practical check, add your selected video bitrate and audio bitrate, then allow at least 20% additional upload capacity. This is a planning estimate, not a guarantee: bitrate variation, shared-network use, and other traffic can affect stability. If your measured upload cannot sustain the target with headroom, lower the resolution or frame rate and choose the matching bitrate from the table.

Encoder settings that affect stream quality

  • Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS.
  • Video codec: H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1. Match the bitrate column to the codec being ingested.
  • Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
  • Keyframes: Set a 2-second interval; do not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Frame rate: YouTube’s guidance supports up to 60 fps.
  • Audio: AAC or MP3. YouTube lists 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1 surround; its listed bitrates are 128 kbps for stereo and 384 kbps for 5.1. 5.1 surround is supported only for AAC over RTMP/RTMPS.
  • Advanced video options: YouTube lists square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC.

For SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709 color and 8-bit depth. HDR has additional requirements: YouTube’s guidance specifies HEVC, 10-bit video, compatible BT.2020 color metadata, and protocol- and hardware-dependent conditions. Follow YouTube’s HDR live-streaming instructions rather than applying the SDR recommendations to an HDR setup.

Set resolution and latency in YouTube

YouTube detects the incoming resolution and frame rate automatically by default. To select resolution manually, create a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into multiple output formats for viewers.

Bitrate and latency are different choices. YouTube’s 2160p/4K guidance does not offer the “improve for low latency” option and optimizes 4K for quality at normal latency. Lower latency can increase playback buffering, and matters less when you do not interact with viewers in real time.

Test before going live

  1. Check your actual upload capacity. Test outbound speed under conditions similar to the stream, including the network and devices that will be active during the broadcast. Make room for audio, any backup stream, and YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
  2. Run a representative test. Use audio and movement similar to the intended broadcast; static images do not reveal the same encoding or network demands as gameplay or camera motion. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
  3. Start early and inspect the preview. YouTube suggests setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event. Check the Live Control Room preview and confirm audio, video, and audience accessibility.
  4. Monitor stream health. Review YouTube’s stream-health status and messages. If the connection struggles, reduce the target bitrate or select a lower resolution or frame rate, then test again.

Common bitrate and connection problems

  • Stream is unstable despite a fast speed test: The test may reflect download speed, a quiet network, or a short-lived peak rather than sustainable upload capacity. Check outbound speed during representative network use, reduce competing traffic, and leave headroom.
  • Encoder warns that bitrate is too low: Confirm you selected the correct codec column and that the encoder’s output resolution and frame rate match your settings. Increase bitrate only if your upload can sustain it; otherwise lower resolution or frame rate.
  • Video looks soft or blocky: Verify the encoder is actually sending the intended resolution and frame rate, and that it uses the recommended bitrate for its ingest codec. Fast motion, especially gameplay, can be more demanding than a static scene.
  • Audio cuts out or is distorted: Check the audio codec, sample rate, and audio bitrate separately from video. Ensure the combined stream fits within available upload capacity.
  • Viewer playback buffers: Check the connection and stream health first. If you selected a lower-latency mode, consider whether its possible increase in buffering is worth the interaction benefit.
  • Manual resolution controls are unavailable: YouTube’s instructions require a custom stream key for manually selecting resolution. Otherwise, resolution and frame rate are detected automatically.

Live bitrate is not upload-file bitrate

These values apply to video sent live to YouTube’s ingest servers. Uploading a finished video uses a separate set of encoding recommendations; do not use this live table as an upload-file calculator.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep pre-recorded video looping as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo runs that stream from the cloud: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Every slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it includes 10 GB storage per slot (pooled across active slots), looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.
