Possibly—but a Chromebook is not a guaranteed 24/7 streaming machine. YouTube offers a browser-based webcam route that may work in Chrome on a particular Chromebook, but its guidance does not specifically certify Chromebook or ChromeOS compatibility. Test your device and setup before relying on it, and plan around YouTube’s warning that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be archived.
What a Chromebook can—and cannot—be counted on to do
YouTube lets you start a webcam livestream from a computer in a browser. Its compatibility guidance names Chrome 60 or later and Firefox 53 or later, but does not expressly confirm that every Chromebook or ChromeOS configuration is supported. A particular Chromebook may work; the browser requirement alone is not a promise of device compatibility. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements and webcam setup guidance.
For a study stream showing a live camera view, the browser webcam workflow is the simplest documented starting point. Keeping a broadcast running continuously is a separate challenge: it depends on the individual Chromebook, camera and microphone access, network stability, power, sleep behavior, and whether the browser workflow remains active. YouTube’s compatibility pages do not guarantee uninterrupted operation, and there is no established Chromebook uptime figure to rely on.
Check your channel before setting up
- Your channel must be verified, and it must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days.
- YouTube says streamers must be at least 16 years old.
- First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours. Enable it well before the planned broadcast.
Confirm the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

Start a test stream from the Chromebook
- Sign in to the eligible YouTube channel in Chrome and open YouTube Studio’s Go Live flow.
- Choose Webcam as the streaming method.
- Select the camera and microphone you intend to use. Allow Chrome and the site to access them if prompted; check the browser’s site permissions if a device is missing.
- Enter the stream details and choose a visibility setting. Use a private or unlisted test before scheduling a public study stream.
- Start the stream and confirm that the picture, sound, and connection behave as expected. Test the Chromebook’s power and sleep settings during a session long enough to expose problems, rather than assuming the machine will stay awake indefinitely.
YouTube’s webcam flow does not require live-stream encoding software. It is designed for a direct camera-and-microphone broadcast, not necessarily for a prepared video loop or an elaborate scene with overlays.
Plan the stream length around YouTube’s archive limit
A single 24-hour session is a poor choice if you need a dependable replay. YouTube Help says a livestream under 12 hours can be automatically archived, and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Ending and restarting before the 12-hour mark is the safer approach when you want separate archives. If preserving the original recording matters, keep a local copy as well. Read YouTube’s archive guidance.

This matters if you are pursuing YouTube Partner Program eligibility through watch time: YouTube’s August 12, 2026 explanation says public archived livestreams can count as qualified watch hours, while live streams that are not archived do not. Choose the right route for the kind of study stream
Live camera view: use the browser webcam option
If the stream is simply a real-time view from a camera with microphone audio, start with YouTube Studio’s Webcam option. It has fewer moving parts than an encoder setup, though it still needs a compatible, functioning device and a tested connection.

Looped video or overlays: verify an encoder or hosted service
YouTube describes encoder streaming as useful for gameplay, overlays, and external production equipment. That does not establish that a particular encoder runs on a given Chromebook. If you want a prerecorded study scene to loop or need a more produced layout, check compatibility for the specific software and Chromebook before building the workflow around it.
Keep the content and rights in order
Livestreams must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Check that you have the rights to any music, ambient audio, video, or study material you include; a background track or borrowed footage can create a copyright problem even when the stream is intended as study ambience. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance covers the platform’s content and policy requirements.

Troubleshoot before going public
- Camera or microphone does not appear: Confirm the intended device is available to the Chromebook and that Chrome has permission to use it. Recheck the device selections in the webcam setup.
- You cannot start a livestream: Check channel verification, live-streaming restrictions within the previous 90 days, and whether first-time activation has completed. Activation may take up to 24 hours.
- The stream stops when you leave the Chromebook: Test its power and sleep behavior while streaming. Do not assume a browser session will remain active when the lid is closed or the device sleeps.
- The connection drops or the broadcast becomes unstable: Test the actual network and device together before the public stream. The cited YouTube compatibility information does not promise continuous connectivity or uptime.
- The replay is missing after a long session: A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. For archives, end and restart before that threshold and retain a local recording if necessary.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube stream made from uploaded study footage rather than a live camera view, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality, and can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it is not a live camera feed. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
