If audio and video are out of sync in a YouTube RTMP stream, first find where the mismatch begins: compare the OBS preview, a short local recording, YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and the stream’s playback. Then adjust the source that is late, test again, and check whether the error stays constant or grows over time. Changing YouTube’s latency mode affects capture-to-viewer delay; it is not established as a fix for audio being early or late relative to video.
Find where the sync problem starts
Use a clear event you can see and hear, such as a hand clap in frame or a spoken word with visible mouth movement. Compare the same event at each stage. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking encoder output, CPU load, the local archive and the outbound connection (YouTube: Fix streaming issues).
- Check the OBS preview. If the mouth movement and sound are already mismatched there, investigate the sources and their timing.
- Record a short local sample. Review the file rather than relying only on what you hear in headphones. If the mismatch appears in the recording too, focus on capture timing, source settings or per-source delay.
- Check Live Control Room. Compare its preview with the local recording. If the encoder preview and local file are healthy but the YouTube preview is not, inspect stream health and the connection.
- Check playback, when practical. If only the viewer-facing stream appears affected, test the outbound connection and review YouTube’s stream-health indicators.
A constant offset means the sound is consistently early or late by about the same amount. Drift means the gap grows over time. A fixed delay may help a constant offset, but increasing one delay repeatedly is unlikely to solve growing drift. For drift, investigate capture clocks, device timestamps, sample rates and system load.
Adjust OBS based on which source is late
Camera video is late; audio is early
Try delaying the video source. In OBS, add a Render Delay filter to the relevant video source and adjust its delay in milliseconds, checking a new local recording after each change. OBS documents Render Delay as a way to delay the rendered image, including for syncing a webcam image with microphone audio (OBS Project: Render Delay Filter).

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A video capture device appears delayed
Inspect the Video Capture Device source’s Buffering setting. OBS says disabling buffering can help when the device itself has delay, while enabled buffering can help with stuttering. This is a diagnostic choice, not a universal recommendation: compare recordings with each setting and keep the one that gives your device stable, synchronized output (OBS Project: Video Capture Sources).
Audio is late; video is early
Reduce any delay applied to the video, or use an audio timing control if your software version provides one. Change timing in small increments and judge the result in a local recording or stream output, not just through headphone monitoring. The OBS documentation cited here covers Render Delay and capture-device buffering and timestamps; it does not establish a current menu path for an audio Sync Offset control.

The mismatch grows as the stream continues
Do not treat drift as a simple fixed offset. Check whether the capture devices use stable timestamps, whether the audio sample rate matches the capture setup, and whether the system is under heavy load. OBS documents a Windows-only device-timestamp option intended to help prevent desynchronization and recommends matching capture settings to what the device supports (OBS Project: Video Capture Sources). Settings and labels can vary by OBS version and device.
Check encoder settings without mistaking them for a sync correction
YouTube’s encoder guidance includes RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. These are compatibility and stream-quality baselines, not guaranteed fixes for relative audio/video timing. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion; obtain the stream URL and key from Live Control Room (YouTube: Live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions).

YouTube defines stream latency as the delay between capture by the encoder or camera and presentation to viewers. That is different from whether sound and picture line up with each other. The reviewed YouTube guidance does not establish changing latency mode as a remedy for a relative sync problem (YouTube: Manage live stream settings).
Verify the fix before going live
- Run a private or unlisted test using the same kind of speech, game audio, camera movement and capture devices expected in the actual stream.
- Preview the test in Live Control Room and review a local archive. YouTube recommends previewing before going live and checking that local archive files are intact (YouTube: Fix streaming issues).
- Watch the test for several minutes to see whether timing remains stable or drifts.
- Monitor audio and video quality throughout the stream, rather than assuming a successful initial check guarantees consistent output (YouTube: Monitor your live stream).
Common causes and what to try
| What you notice | Likely area to investigate | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Mismatch in OBS preview and local recording | Source timing, capture-device settings or per-source processing | Identify which source is late; test Render Delay for late video or inspect the capture device’s buffering and timestamp settings. |
| Local recording is in sync, but YouTube preview is not | Encoder load, stream configuration or outbound connection | Check encoder errors and CPU load, then inspect stream health and test the outbound connection. |
| Sync is wrong by a steady amount | Constant source offset | Apply a small timing adjustment to the late source and recheck a recording. |
| Sync gets worse over time | Clock, timestamp, sample-rate or system-load mismatch | Investigate device timestamps and supported capture settings; do not rely on a single fixed delay. |
| Disabling capture buffering reduces delay but causes stuttering | Buffering trade-off for that device | Compare both settings and choose the stable result that remains synchronized. |
