In FFmpeg, -g is a frame-count setting, not a number of seconds. The exact option mapping depends on the encoder, so confirm what your installed encoder supports and verify the stream output rather than assuming one command fixes every setup.
What YouTube’s warning means
YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends a keyframe every 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Its troubleshooting page explains that the warning can mean keyframes are arriving too often or not often enough. These are live-ingest recommendations, not universal settings for every video uploaded to YouTube.
YouTube’s live encoder settings give the recommended interval and maximum. Its live streaming error guidance gives the 30 fps example: a 2-second interval is 60 frames.
Calculate the FFmpeg GOP value
For a constant-frame-rate output, multiply the frame rate actually sent to YouTube by 2. That gives the frame count for the recommended two-second interval:

The 30 fps figure is the example stated by YouTube; the other rows follow the same frame-rate-times-two calculation. Use the output rate, not necessarily the source file’s rate or a capture setting that FFmpeg later changes.
Set FFmpeg’s GOP option
Example for a 30 fps live output

-g 60
At 60 fps, the corresponding target is -g 120. Place the option with the other video encoder options in your existing FFmpeg command. These are illustrative option values, not complete streaming commands: the input, codec, output URL, stream key, and transport settings depend on your setup.
Check the selected encoder first
FFmpeg’s generic -g option controls maximum GOP distance for encoders that support the generic codec option, but encoders can expose additional or different controls. Identify the video encoder your command actually selects, then inspect its options with ffmpeg -h encoder=ENCODER_NAME, replacing ENCODER_NAME with the relevant encoder name. For example, do not assume a software encoder and a hardware encoder interpret every option identically. Confirm that the output frame rate is constant if you are using this simple frame-count calculation, and check the encoded stream to establish that the requested cadence is actually present.
When to use timestamp forcing
FFmpeg also offers -force_key_frames to request keyframes at timestamps. FFmpeg rounds requested timestamps to the encoder time base, so this is not a universal replacement for choosing a suitable GOP size or understanding how the selected codec and encoder behave. Consult the FFmpeg command-line documentation and the selected encoder’s help before relying on timestamp forcing.

Check closed-GOP behavior
Keyframe interval and GOP closure are related but distinct settings. YouTube’s live error guidance says its processing pipeline requires a closed GOP for optimal transcoding. Check whether your encoder supports a closed-GOP option and how to enable it; the exact setting is encoder-specific, so do not copy an option name from a different encoder without confirming it is supported.

- Check the actual output frame rate. Recalculate the target from the frame rate being sent to YouTube, not just the value you intended to configure.
- Confirm which encoder is active. Review the FFmpeg command and that encoder’s help output; a generic option may not be enough for every encoder implementation.
- Verify the encoded stream. Check the output’s keyframe cadence and whether closed-GOP behavior is enabled where supported. Do not infer success solely from the command line.
- Consider ingest errors. YouTube notes that ingestion errors can affect GOP size. If the warning remains despite appropriate encoder settings, investigate the ingest path as well as the FFmpeg configuration.
- Separate live from upload advice. Make sure the warning is from a live stream before applying live-ingest guidance; uploaded-file recommendations are a different workflow.
Live streaming and uploaded files are not the same workflow
For YouTube Live, the published guidance is a 2-second recommended keyframe interval, with a maximum of 4 seconds. For uploaded video, YouTube’s separate recommended upload encoding settings include H.264, progressive scan, two consecutive B frames, closed GOP, and a GOP of half the frame rate, among other recommendations. Do not treat upload-export guidance as the settings for a live ingest warning. YouTube also notes that some upload features are available only to partners using YouTube Studio Content Manager, so not every item on that page is a universal upload requirement.
