How to Fix Dropped Frames in OBS When Streaming a Video Playlist to YouTube

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start by checking which OBS counter is rising: network dropped frames, rendering lag, or encoding lag. Network drops point to an unstable or insufficient upload path to YouTube; rendering and encoding lag point to work the computer cannot keep up with. The fixes are different, so check OBS Stats during a representative part of your playlist before changing settings.

Diagnose which kind of frames are being lost

In OBS, open View > Stats while streaming a representative section of the playlist. Watch the counters for dropped frames (network), rendering lag, and encoding lag. Note which counter rises; a choppy stream alone does not identify the cause.

  • Network dropped frames: OBS is having trouble sustaining its connection to YouTube at the configured bitrate. OBS Project defines dropped frames as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate (Stream Connection Troubleshooting).
  • Rendering lag: OBS is not compositing and rendering frames quickly enough, often because the GPU is overloaded.
  • Encoding lag: the encoder cannot process frames fast enough. This is a local system or encoder workload issue, not automatically a network fault.

If all three remain low but viewers report buffering, compare YouTube Live stream health with viewer-side playback conditions. A viewer’s internet connection or congestion can disrupt playback even when OBS is sending successfully (YouTube’s computer playback troubleshooting).

If OBS reports network dropped frames

Work on the OBS-to-YouTube upload path first. Lowering bitrate may stabilize the send, but it also reduces video quality. Do not assume the playlist itself is causing network drops: a local playlist can affect playback or computer workload, while OBS’s network counter concerns the stream’s connection to the remote server.

1. Set a bitrate your connection can sustain

Choose the encoder, resolution, and frame rate in OBS, then use YouTube’s corresponding bitrate recommendation as a target—not as proof your connection can sustain it. YouTube’s currently published table accessed 2026-10-03 gives these video bitrate values; its visible page capture has no publication date, and recommendations may change (Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

Resolution and frame rate AV1 or H.265 H.264
2160p (4K), 60 fps 35 Mbps recommended; 10 Mbps minimum 50 Mbps recommended; 14 Mbps minimum
2160p (4K), 30 fps 30 Mbps recommended; 8 Mbps minimum 42 Mbps recommended; 11 Mbps minimum
1440p, 60 fps 24 Mbps recommended; 6 Mbps minimum 34 Mbps recommended; 8 Mbps minimum
1440p, 30 fps 15 Mbps recommended; 5 Mbps minimum 21 Mbps recommended; 7 Mbps minimum
1080p, 60 fps 12 Mbps recommended; 4 Mbps minimum 17 Mbps recommended; 6 Mbps minimum
1080p, 30 fps 10 Mbps recommended; 4 Mbps minimum 14 Mbps recommended; 5 Mbps minimum

These are YouTube’s published video bitrate recommendations and minimums for the listed codec and output modes, not a custom setting for your connection. YouTube’s table also covers 720p and lower; consult it for those modes. Leave enough stable upload capacity for the stream rather than setting OBS to the full result of a best-case speed test. YouTube recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), and RTMPS. It automatically detects encoder settings by default in Live Control Room and transcodes incoming video for viewer formats.

2. Test the connection path

  1. If you are on Wi-Fi, test a wired Ethernet connection to the router. Keep the same OBS output settings during the comparison.
  2. Check whether a VPN, firewall or security suite, or vendor network-priority software is interfering. Temporarily test changes cautiously, then restore protections; do not leave security disabled as a permanent fix.
  3. Update or troubleshoot the network adapter driver, router, and modem. If possible, test another streaming service as a diagnostic comparison; that may help identify a service-specific route issue, but it does not repair the route to YouTube.
  4. Consider ISP congestion or routing, especially if the problem varies by time or persists across devices on the same connection. Contact the ISP with the times and symptoms if needed.

OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance covers network optimization and TCP pacing options on Windows only. Dynamic bitrate can reduce the bitrate during congestion to help maintain continuity, but it trades away quality and does not fix the underlying connection problem. Use it as a fallback, not a substitute for finding the cause (OBS Project’s connection troubleshooting steps).

If rendering or encoding lag rises

Free up the computer’s rendering and encoding capacity. OBS Project notes that OBS needs GPU time and resources to composite and render a scene (Encoding Performance Troubleshooting).

  • Reduce the output resolution or frame rate in OBS. If 60 fps is not holding, test 30 fps.
  • Simplify the scene: remove unnecessary sources and disable expensive filters or effects.
  • Close other GPU-heavy applications while streaming.
  • For oversized media, reduce the source resolution where practical instead of asking OBS to scale unnecessarily large files.
  • For a Media Source, test its hardware decoding option if the GPU supports it. Whether this helps depends on the file and system; it is not guaranteed to improve performance.

Change one variable at a time and watch Stats through another representative playlist segment. Lower resolution or frame rate can reduce fidelity, so choose the smallest change that stops the relevant lag counter from rising.

Check the playlist source and playback

OBS’s VLC Video source supports playlists and requires VLC to be installed. A 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC. The source provides loop, shuffle, visibility, and network-caching controls (OBS Project’s Media Sources guide).

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
  • Confirm the VLC Video source is visible in the scene and configured to loop or shuffle as intended.
  • Check whether the source is being hidden or disabled during a scene change; source visibility behavior can interrupt playback without causing network drops.
  • If the playlist uses remote media URLs rather than local files, distinguish that media-fetch connection from OBS’s separate upload connection to YouTube.
  • VLC exposes network caching, but OBS documentation does not prescribe a universal cache value for local-file playlists. Avoid changing it without a playback symptom to address.

For one-off supported files, OBS’s Media Source can play an individual media file and includes a hardware-decoding option on supported systems. If Stats shows network drops, changing the playlist source is unlikely to solve the upload-path issue.

Run a representative test before returning to a long stream

  1. Choose the intended codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR mode, and keyframe interval using YouTube’s current guidance.
  2. Stream a section with similar motion and audio to the material you plan to loop. A static opening slate is not a useful load test for a high-motion playlist.
  3. Watch OBS Stats and YouTube Live Control Room stream health during the test. Identify whether network drops, rendering lag, or encoding lag rises.
  4. If a counter rises, apply the matching fix above, then repeat the same test so you can tell whether the change helped.

Common symptoms and what to try

Symptom Likely area Next step
OBS network dropped-frames counter rises Upload capacity, network path, or YouTube route Lower bitrate to a sustainable level; test Ethernet; inspect VPN, security, network software, router/modem, and ISP conditions.
Rendering lag rises while network drops stay low GPU compositing or scene workload Reduce output resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, and close GPU-heavy apps.
Encoding lag rises while network drops stay low Encoder workload or available system resources Reduce output demands and unnecessary sources or filters; retest.
Playlist picture pauses but OBS network counter stays steady Media source, file decoding, visibility, or remote media fetch Check VLC installation and architecture, source visibility, file behavior, and whether media is local or remote.
OBS counters stay stable but viewers buffer Viewer playback connection or platform-side playback conditions Check YouTube stream health separately and compare reports from different viewers or connections.

Or let it run in the cloud
