If your YouTube RTMP stream keeps reconnecting, first identify whether the encoder, computer, or outbound internet connection is failing. Check the Live Control Room’s stream-health notices and your encoder’s logs at the time of a drop, then compare them with the encoder preview and a local recording. Change settings only after you know which part of the chain is breaking.
Find out where the connection is failing
A reconnect is a symptom, not a diagnosis. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance separates encoder problems from issues sending the stream over the internet. The difference matters: a clean local output with a failed connection to YouTube points you toward the outbound path, while glitches in the encoder preview or local recording point toward the source, settings, or computer.
- YouTube Live Control Room: Read the stream-health notices and note their timing.
- Encoder: Check its logs and status at the same moment. Look for errors in the outgoing feed, not just a reconnect message.
- Local preview and recording: Check for freezes, missing frames, audio faults, or other artifacts. If the local output is also bad, investigate the encoder and computer before changing your network setup.
- Viewer reports: If viewers on separate connections report the same problem, investigate the stream or encoder and follow the dashboard’s specific errors rather than assuming each viewer has a local network problem.
YouTube’s official troubleshooting guide is the reference for interpreting encoder and stream-health errors: YouTube Help: Fix live stream issues.
Check the encoder and computer
- Update the encoder software. If the problem began after a change, note what changed and use the encoder’s logs to look for an error at the reconnect time.
- Inspect CPU load while streaming. If the computer is heavily loaded, the encoder may struggle to produce a consistent output. Close unnecessary workloads and test again.
- Review the local preview and recording. If either shows faults, check the source routing, encoder configuration, and system load. A local recording can reveal problems that are easy to miss while watching the live dashboard.
- Try another encoder if the cause remains unclear. YouTube suggests this as a way to help isolate an encoder-specific problem.
If the local output is healthy but YouTube loses the incoming connection, move on to the upload path instead of repeatedly changing video settings without evidence.

Test whether your upload connection can sustain the stream
The relevant comparison is between the encoder’s total target bitrate and the upload capacity your connection can reliably sustain—not just the speed advertised by your provider. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and choosing a quality level that is dependable on the available connection. Run a speed test under conditions similar to the planned stream, including typical household or office traffic.
- Measure upload performance when the connection is being used as it will be during the stream.
- Compare the result with the encoder’s target bitrate, leaving room for normal network variation and other traffic.
- If upload performance is unstable or lacks headroom, test again at a lower resolution or bitrate and watch the stream-health indicators.
- If the test shows connection problems, contact your internet service provider.
A wired Ethernet connection is an optional diagnostic comparison: test it against Wi-Fi to see whether the local wireless path contributes to the instability. It is not a guaranteed fix, and YouTube’s guidance is to test the connection and contact the ISP when there is a problem.

YouTube’s encoder guidance says to “run a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Its bitrate figures below are encoder-setting recommendations, not guaranteed internet-speed requirements or promises of a stable stream.
| H.264 output | YouTube’s recommended video bitrate range |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps minimum; 17 Mbps recommended |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended |
These are the figures in YouTube Help’s current live encoder settings guidance; the page does not display a publication year. A nominal connection speed at or above a recommended bitrate does not prove that the upload will remain stable. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the full guidance.

Confirm the RTMP encoder settings
Match the configuration to YouTube’s ingest recommendations and to the quality your actual connection can sustain. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported codecs for RTMP workflows, with frame rates up to 60 fps.
- Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Bitrate: Choose a bitrate appropriate for your resolution and frame rate, then check it against measured, reliable upload capacity. The table above gives YouTube’s H.264 examples.
- Transport: Use RTMPS when available; YouTube recommends it as the encrypted version of RTMP.
Do not treat HLS as a general-purpose cure for RTMP reconnects. YouTube describes HLS as an option for supported workflows such as HDR or codecs unavailable through RTMP; it sends video in segments and has higher latency than a continuous stream. Use it only when your encoder and workflow support it and that trade-off fits. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.

Refresh the stream key only for a key-related error
A stream key lets the encoder send a feed to the right YouTube stream and acts like a password. It is worth checking when a third-party encoder reports an error starting the stream. In that case, YouTube’s troubleshooting advice is to get a new key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. A channel owner or manager can reset a key.
Do not rotate the key as a blanket response to a midstream network drop. If the encoder is already sending successfully and the evidence points to upload instability, key replacement does not address that cause. See YouTube’s stream troubleshooting guidance and YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder.

Rehearse and monitor the complete setup
Test the whole chain before the event, with audio and movement similar to what you plan to stream. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event. Use that time to check the Live Control Room preview, confirm the local archive is recording, and monitor stream health and quality.
If you have a backup encoder, test the failover rather than assuming it works. YouTube suggests stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable to confirm that the backup takes over. Its live streaming tips cover setup and failover preparation.
Quick troubleshooting by symptom
| What you see | What to check next |
|---|---|
| The encoder reports a startup or stream-key error. | Check the key in Live Control Room; if the error indicates a key problem, get a new one and update the encoder. |
| The local preview or recording also has glitches. | Inspect source routing, encoder settings, software updates, and computer load. Try another encoder if the cause is still unclear. |
| The local output looks healthy, but YouTube shows connection or stream-health errors. | Test upload performance under realistic conditions, compare it with the total target bitrate, and contact your ISP if the connection test shows problems. |
| The stream fails only on Wi-Fi or behaves differently when wired. | Compare the two paths as a diagnostic. A wired connection may help isolate the local wireless segment, but it is not a universal fix. |
| The stream reconnects after raising resolution or bitrate. | Test a lower target that leaves headroom on the upload connection, then monitor stream health during a rehearsal. |
| A backup encoder is available but has not been tested. | Rehearse failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then verify that the backup takes over. |
