For a standard SDR 4K/60 YouTube Live stream, use Intel Quick Sync Video (QSV) in OBS only if it appears in your encoder list and your particular Intel graphics supports the chosen codec. Set rate control to CBR and the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for H.265/HEVC and AV1 at 2160p60; test the complete stream and lower the output target if your encoder or upload connection cannot sustain it.
Check whether your Intel system can use Quick Sync
QSV availability and capability depend on the Intel graphics generation, driver, OBS version, and codec. OBS documents QSV on Windows and Linux for Intel HD Graphics with Core-i processors from the 2nd generation (Sandy Bridge) onward, and recommends 4th-generation Core-i (Haswell) or newer because earlier QSV generations produced lower image quality. These compatibility references do not guarantee that an older processor can encode 4K at 60 fps.
- Update OBS and the Intel graphics driver.
- In OBS, open Settings → Output → Streaming → Encoder and inspect the available options.
- Select an Intel Quick Sync encoder only if it is listed and supports your intended codec and output. If you also have an NVIDIA or AMD graphics card, OBS generally recommends using NVENC or AMF instead; the best choice depends on the machine and workload.
If QSV is missing from the encoder menu, OBS cannot use it in the current setup. Intel likewise advises checking whether the encoder is available on the specific hardware rather than assuming every Intel system exposes the same capabilities. See OBS’s hardware encoding documentation and Intel’s streaming guide.
What bitrate for YouTube 4K 60fps?
YouTube’s live encoder table lists different bitrate recommendations by ingestion codec. The figures below are YouTube’s platform guidance for 2160p60, not a guarantee of QSV performance or a measurement of the internet connection you need.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Ingestion codec | YouTube minimum | YouTube recommended |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| H.265/HEVC | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
| AV1 | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
Use the recommendation as a starting point if your chosen QSV encoder supports that codec and your measured upload is stable with practical headroom for variation. A bitrate at the minimum is allowed by YouTube’s table but is below its recommendation. If the connection cannot reliably sustain the selected rate, reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate instead of persisting with a nominal 4K60 setup that drops frames. YouTube’s current guidance is in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Set up OBS for a standard SDR 4K60 stream
- Choose the output size and frame rate. Set the output to 3840×2160 and 60 fps only when the source, encoder, and stable upload path can handle them. YouTube normally detects resolution and frame rate automatically. Manual resolution selection requires a custom stream key with manual settings enabled in Live Control Room.
- Select the encoder and codec. In Settings → Output → Streaming → Encoder, choose the QSV option available on your system. Select a codec supported by that particular encoder; the available QSV codecs vary by hardware generation and software support.
- Set rate control to CBR. YouTube recommends constant bitrate for live encoding.
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Enter the codec-specific bitrate. Use YouTube’s 4K60 recommendation from the table above as the target when your connection and encoder can sustain it.
- Use RTMPS. This is YouTube’s recommended ingest protocol. The low-latency optimization option is unavailable for 4K/2160p streams, which use normal latency.
- Run a representative test. Include audio and movement like the intended broadcast. Check that YouTube receives the intended resolution and frame rate, monitor stream health and review messages in Live Control Room, and watch OBS for encoder overload or dropped frames.
Should you use H.264, HEVC, or AV1?
Start with the codec options that actually appear for QSV on your computer. YouTube’s recommended 4K60 bitrate is lower for HEVC and AV1 than for H.264, but that does not establish that a particular Intel generation can encode those formats at 4K60. Choose a supported codec, then confirm the encoder can keep up during a representative test. Hardware encoding can move work away from the CPU, but older hardware encoders may deliver lower image quality at the same bitrate.

HDR is a separate setup
Do not apply the SDR settings above unchanged to HDR. YouTube’s live HDR workflow requires compatible HDR content and hardware and uses HEVC/H.265. Its OBS setup calls for a hardware HEVC encoder, Main 10 profile, P010 color format, HDR enabled, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG color space; YouTube recommends HLG. YouTube’s cited compatibility note for Intel 10th-generation graphics or later is specific to Mirillis Action!, not a general guarantee for every OBS/QSV combination. See YouTube’s HDR live-streaming setup.
Troubleshoot missing or unstable 4K60 output
- Quick Sync is missing from OBS: Update OBS and the graphics driver, then check the encoder menu again. If QSV is still absent, it is not available to OBS on the current hardware and software setup.
- The encoder overloads or frames drop: The system may not sustain the chosen resolution, frame rate, or codec. Test again at a lower resolution or frame rate, or choose another available hardware encoder.
- YouTube reports poor stream health or the stream stutters: Check whether the connection can maintain the selected bitrate. Reduce bitrate or output resolution/frame rate if upload capacity varies; do not treat a speed-test peak as proof of a stable live path.
- The received stream is not 4K60: Verify OBS output settings and the stream information shown in Live Control Room. If you need to set resolution manually, use a custom stream key with manual settings enabled.
- Image quality is weaker than expected: Confirm the codec-specific bitrate and test the chosen encoder. OBS notes that older hardware encoders can produce lower image quality at equivalent bitrate; consider a newer supported encoder or a lower output target.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded video playing on a YouTube channel around the clock, OBS and Quick Sync are a do-it-yourself live encoding setup—not the only option. StreamNeo runs uploaded videos and playlists from the cloud: upload a video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo plays the uploaded video rather than broadcasting a live camera feed.
