Start with the bitrate for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec, then make sure the connection has sustained upload capacity above it. YouTube recommends leaving 20% room; as a planning calculation, that means available upload capacity of at least 1.25 times the stream bitrate. For example, a 1080p30 H.264 stream at YouTube’s recommended 10 Mbps bitrate calls for about 12.5 Mbps of available upload capacity at that baseline—not merely a plan advertised as 12.5 Mbps download.
Upload capacity depends on your stream settings
The encoder sends the live feed upstream, so download speed alone does not tell you whether the connection can carry it. Find the recommended live bitrate for the exact ingestion resolution, frame rate, and codec you plan to use. The figures below are YouTube’s recommended video bitrates for H.264 live ingestion. The upload-capacity figures are calculated by multiplying each bitrate by 1.25, applying YouTube Help’s 20% room recommendation; they are planning baselines, not separate upload thresholds published by YouTube.
| Resolution and frame rate | H.264 recommended stream bitrate | Calculated upload-capacity baseline (1.25×) |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 12.5 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 21.25 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 21 Mbps | 26.25 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 34 Mbps | 42.5 Mbps |
| 2160p30 | 42 Mbps | 52.5 Mbps |
| 2160p60 | 50 Mbps | 62.5 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help’s current recommended live encoder bitrates, accessed in 2026, and arithmetic planning figures based on its 20% headroom advice. YouTube’s table also lists separate AV1/H.265 recommendations: 6 Mbps for 720p30 or 720p60, 10 Mbps for 1080p30, 12 Mbps for 1080p60, 15 Mbps for 1440p30, 24 Mbps for 1440p60, 30 Mbps for 2160p30, and 35 Mbps for 2160p60. Those are encoder bitrates, not ISP plan requirements. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings and bitrate table for your selected codec and settings.
Is 10 Mbps upload enough for 1080p?
It depends on the frame rate, codec, and how much upload capacity is consistently available to the encoder. YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate is 10 Mbps for 1080p30, so 10 Mbps of actual upload capacity leaves no room above that target. Applying YouTube’s 20% room guidance gives a calculated baseline of 12.5 Mbps available upload for that example. For H.264 1080p60, the recommended bitrate is 17 Mbps and the corresponding calculated baseline is 21.25 Mbps.

How to estimate the speed your connection needs
- Choose resolution, frame rate, and codec. Use the settings you will actually send to YouTube; bitrate recommendations differ by codec and frame rate.
- Look up the matching live bitrate. Use YouTube’s live ingestion recommendations, not its separate recommendations for uploading prerecorded videos.
- Allow room above the target. YouTube Help’s Streaming tips says, “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” For a single stream, the simple planning calculation here is target bitrate × 1.25.
- Measure available upload capacity under realistic conditions. YouTube recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate. Check at the place and time you will stream, and account for household traffic or other devices that share the upstream connection.
- Test the actual encoder and monitor stream health. Send a representative test with the intended video and audio, then watch YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test. A speed-test result does not show how the full setup behaves continuously.
YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS live-encoder guidance specifies constant bitrate (CBR), recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. It recommends 128 Kbps stereo audio for RTMP/RTMPS. Audio is a small part of the total load, but video, audio, and transport all need to fit within the connection’s available upstream capacity. Refer to the official live encoder recommendations for setup details.
What makes a connection stable enough for 24/7 streaming?
Measure sustained capacity, not just a plan’s headline speed
The relevant figure is upload capacity available to the encoder while the stream is running. Other people and devices can consume upstream bandwidth, and YouTube notes that shared connections may restrict what is available to an individual streamer. Leave room for those demands rather than sizing a stream to the connection’s best isolated speed-test result.

Prefer Ethernet where practical
For a computer-based encoder, a wired Ethernet connection to the router or switch avoids relying on Wi-Fi for the local link. Ethernet cannot increase the ISP’s upstream capacity or prevent an ISP outage, but it removes one variable from the path between the computer and router.
Treat uptime as a separate reliability question
Meeting a bitrate calculation does not guarantee an uninterrupted stream. Access-network interruptions, local network problems, and service outages can still stop transmission. YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not publish a dedicated Mbps threshold for “stable 24/7” streaming, a guaranteed uptime level, or a universal failover design. For a continuous channel, validate the actual connection and decide separately how you will handle outages.

If you stream to more than one destination
Add the outgoing bitrates together before estimating capacity. YouTube’s simulstreaming guidance gives a target of 1.5–2 times the combined bitrate for stability, particularly on shared connections. That range applies to simulstreaming guidance; it should not be presented as a universal single-stream 24/7 rule. See YouTube’s simulstreaming guidance.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the stream is made from uploaded videos rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Frequently Asked Questions
Does a faster download speed make a YouTube livestream more stable?
No. The live encoder needs adequate upload capacity; download speed alone does not establish that the connection can send the stream.
Can any upload speed guarantee a 24/7 stream will never drop?
No. The bitrate and headroom calculation estimates capacity, but cannot prevent ISP, local-network, or service outages.
