Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →When OBS says YouTube’s server is disconnected, it usually means OBS has lost a direct connection from your computer to YouTube’s ingest server—not that OBS Project’s own servers are down. Check OBS’s dropped-frames counter and connection indicator first, then troubleshoot bitrate and network route, local software, and your YouTube stream settings in that order. The message alone does not identify the cause.
What “YouTube server disconnected” means in OBS
OBS sends the stream directly from your computer to the streaming service. In OBS’s words, “There are no OBS servers – the connection goes directly from your computer to the streaming service.” So the word “server” refers to YouTube’s ingest server, not an OBS relay. (OBS Help)
A rising dropped-frames count or a yellow/red connection indicator points toward an unstable route to the ingest server or a bitrate your connection cannot sustain. Other possibilities include a route-specific server issue, local network or ISP conditions, VPN or security-software interference, or a YouTube stream-key or URL mismatch. Without an OBS log, YouTube’s stream-health messages, and details of your setup, there is no reliable way to identify the individual cause from the error alone.
Fix the connection in a controlled order
Change one thing at a time, then observe whether the dropped-frames counter and connection indicator improve. That makes it easier to identify what actually helped.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Check OBS’s connection indicators. During the failure, watch the dropped-frames counter and the connection indicator. Rising dropped frames with a yellow or red indicator supports a network-path or sustainable-bitrate problem. OBS says dropped frames of this kind are extremely unlikely to be caused by OBS Studio itself. (OBS stream connection troubleshooting)
- Reduce the video bitrate to a sustainable level. In OBS, open Settings → Output and lower Video Bitrate. OBS’s general troubleshooting guide suggests 75% of total measured upload speed as a starting diagnostic value—not a guarantee of stability. Upload capacity can vary, and YouTube also has recommendations for the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec. Compare the lower bitrate with YouTube’s current table before deciding how far to reduce it.
- Try another ingest server if OBS offers the option. Open Settings → Stream and select a different server, where available. If this changes the result, it suggests a route-specific issue; it does not establish that the original server was down for everyone. (OBS stream connection troubleshooting)
- Isolate local network and software interference. If you use a VPN or security software, test whether the connection changes when the suspected software is temporarily disabled. If the test supports interference, restore protection and add a narrow OBS exception rather than leaving protection off. If available, try a wired Ethernet connection to help distinguish Wi-Fi instability from other network problems; a cable will not fix every ISP, route, bitrate, or stream-configuration issue.
- Verify YouTube’s current stream setup. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, confirm the intended stream and copy its current stream key into OBS. A stream key is a credential: do not share it, and if it may have been exposed, ask an authorized channel owner or manager to reset it and update the encoder. If you use RTMPS, confirm that the server URL is the RTMPS endpoint and that your encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube also provides port-443 guidance for some SSL errors. (YouTube stream settings; YouTube RTMPS guide)
- Test the complete broadcast and check stream health. Before the real event, test with audio and movement similar to what you plan to stream. Monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test and live event. If the local network, encoder, and stream configuration checks do not resolve the issue, OBS’s troubleshooting guide points to your internet service provider as the next place to investigate. (YouTube encoder settings; OBS stream connection troubleshooting)
Match OBS output settings to your connection and YouTube
Bitrate is a useful first adjustment, but it is only one part of the stream configuration. YouTube’s encoder guidance, checked on October 3, 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps; CBR; and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. Use the bitrate row that matches your selected codec, resolution, and frame rate in YouTube’s current table.
| Example H.264 output | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations, not a diagnosis of your disconnect or a guarantee that your internet route can sustain the stream. OBS’s separate 75% upload-speed starting point is for troubleshooting and should not be treated as a replacement for choosing an appropriate YouTube setting. Further OBS checks if the basic steps do not help
OBS’s troubleshooting article, dated September 30, 2024, also describes checking Bind to IP and, where appropriate, testing IPv4-only. These options and labels may vary by operating system and OBS version, so do not assume a platform-specific setting applies to every setup. Its article also describes dynamic bitrate adjustment as a beta option: it may lower stream quality when conditions worsen, but it does not repair the underlying network problem. Check OBS’s current documentation before changing advanced network settings. (OBS stream connection troubleshooting)
Common symptoms and what to check next
| What you observe | Next check |
|---|---|
| Dropped frames rise and OBS shows yellow or red connection status | Lower Video Bitrate, then assess the network route, Wi-Fi, VPN, and security software. |
| Connection improves after changing the server | Compare the route again during a test; the result points to a route-specific difference, not a global outage finding. |
| OBS appears connected, but YouTube does not receive the intended stream | Confirm the intended Live Control Room event, current stream key, and server URL. |
| An RTMPS connection produces an SSL-related error | Check that the RTMPS endpoint is configured correctly and consult YouTube’s port-443 guidance. |
| Checks above do not resolve the disconnect | Save the OBS log and YouTube stream-health messages, then contact your ISP or consult current OBS and YouTube support documentation. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded video or playlist live on a YouTube channel 24/7, rather than troubleshoot an OBS broadcast from your computer, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps looping it, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload at its original quality, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and playlists; it does not stream a live camera, and it is for YouTube only. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
