To start a live stream in the YouTube mobile app, tap Create → Live. Your channel must be verified, have at least 50 subscribers, have no live-streaming restrictions from the previous 90 days, and have live streaming enabled. The first activation can take up to 24 hours. You must also be at least 16, and your phone or tablet must run Android 8.0 or later or iOS 8 or later.
Check whether your channel and device are eligible
YouTube’s mobile-live requirements are separate from the general ability to stream by webcam, encoder, or console. Before troubleshooting the app, check each requirement below. The requirements and app labels here reflect YouTube Help guidance accessed October 3, 2026; the pages do not show publication dates, and YouTube may change its rules.
- At least 50 subscribers: YouTube requires this for mobile live streaming.
- Channel verification: Verify the channel using a phone number. YouTube sends a code by text message or voice call.
- No live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days: Policy or copyright issues can result in a temporary or permanent live-streaming restriction.
- Live streaming enabled: First-time activation may take up to 24 hours to become available.
- Supported operating system: Android 8.0 or later, or iOS 8 or later.
- Age: YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance sets a minimum age of 16.
Meeting the subscriber threshold does not remove every audience limitation. Channels with 50–999 subscribers may have a viewer cap, and their live-stream archives may be set to private by default. YouTube says changes after reaching 1,000 subscribers can take several weeks to appear; if the channel later drops below 1,000, the limitations return. Mobile live access is retained until the channel falls below 50 subscribers.
Verify the channel and enable live streaming
- Verify your channel: In YouTube’s verification process, provide a phone number and choose to receive the code by text or voice call. Enter the code when prompted.
- Turn on live streaming: Complete YouTube’s live-stream activation for the channel. If this is your first time, allow up to 24 hours for mobile streaming to become available.
- Confirm the channel is eligible: Check that it has at least 50 subscribers and no live-streaming restriction from the past 90 days.
If a verification code does not arrive, try the other delivery method or another carrier. YouTube notes that some carriers do not support Google messages.

Start a live stream in the YouTube app
- Open the YouTube app on your phone or tablet.
- Tap Create at the bottom of the screen, then tap Live.
- Tap Edit to set the stream details. Choose its visibility and audience, and optionally schedule it or choose to screencast your phone.
- Review the available live-chat options, including age restriction and monetisation settings, then enter the stream details.
- Tap Go live to begin.
- When finished, tap Finish. YouTube displays a recap and creates an archive on your channel. You can edit the archive’s privacy or delete it. A Short highlight may also be available; it defaults to private.
For a stream you scheduled in advance, use Create → Live → Calendar → Select your live stream → Go live.
Set privacy and plan for age-related limits
Check the visibility setting before you start. YouTube documents different defaults for mobile streams: streams default to unlisted for users aged 13–17 and public for users aged 18 or older. You can choose public, private, or unlisted in the stream settings.

The minimum age for live streaming is 16. YouTube also says that live streams featuring 13–15-year-olds who are not visibly accompanied by an adult may have live chat disabled, or the account may temporarily lose live chat or other features. If someone under 16 participates on an adult-owned account, YouTube’s restrictions guidance says the adult must be visibly present.
If Create → Live is missing or will not start
- Channel not verified: Complete phone verification. If the code does not arrive, try a voice call instead of a text, or use another carrier.
- Fewer than 50 subscribers: Mobile streaming is not available until the channel reaches the threshold.
- Recent live-stream restriction: Check whether a policy or copyright matter restricted live streaming within the last 90 days. Do not try to evade an active restriction by streaming from another channel; YouTube prohibits that and says it can lead to account termination.
- First-time activation still pending: Allow up to 24 hours after enabling live streaming for the mobile option to become available.
- Unsupported device software: Check that the device runs Android 8.0 or later or iOS 8 or later.
If you do not meet mobile eligibility requirements, YouTube also documents webcam, encoder, and console streaming methods. These use different setup paths; YouTube describes mobile as useful for vlogging and quick updates, while encoders can support gameplay, overlays, and external hardware. YouTube Help also says expensive equipment is not necessary for a live stream.
