A public YouTube livestream can offer channel memberships while chat is restricted to subscribers or members. The restriction controls who can post in chat; it does not, by itself, prevent eligible viewers from joining as paying members. Availability depends on YouTube’s eligibility and location requirements.
What subscriber-only chat changes
Chat restrictions govern who may post messages, not who can watch a public livestream or whether the channel offers memberships. For members-only chat on a public stream, YouTube says everyone can still watch, but only members can post. YouTube’s memberships guidance describes this setting.
Channel memberships are a separate feature: viewers make monthly payments in exchange for channel perks. YouTube also lists buying a channel membership as an action available during a livestream. YouTube’s commerce policy describes memberships as monthly payments for perks, and its live-stream guidance lists membership purchases among available viewer actions.
Subscriber-only chat and members-only chat are not the same setting
Subscriber-only chat limits posting to viewers who have subscribed for the required period, where that option is available. Members-only chat limits posting to paying channel members. The specific instructions below cover members-only chat; choosing one of these audience restrictions does not itself create memberships or make a channel eligible for them.

How to enable members-only chat
YouTube’s documented creator steps use YouTube Studio on a computer. The setting is called “Enable members-only chat.”
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Create, then Go live.
- Create a stream or open one you have already scheduled.
- Open Settings.
- Under Live chat, enable Enable members-only chat.
- Save the setting.
These steps are documented in YouTube’s instructions for managing memberships and perks. Check the stream’s audience and chat settings before going live so the restriction matches what you intend.

Eligibility still applies
The feature-level answer is yes, but not every creator can offer memberships, and not every viewer can purchase them. YouTube directs creators to meet its fan-funding minimum requirements, live in a location where memberships are available, and satisfy its additional criteria. Viewer eligibility can also depend on account and location conditions. Check YouTube’s current channel-membership requirements before planning around the feature.
Will restricting chat increase membership earnings?
YouTube’s feature documentation explains what the chat setting does, but it does not quantify whether subscriber-only or members-only chat changes membership conversion, revenue, or viewer behavior. There is no substantiated earnings effect to promise. Treat the restriction as a moderation and participation choice, and make the membership perks and eligibility clear to viewers.
