To enable YouTube live streaming for the first time, verify your channel, confirm it has no live-streaming restrictions from the previous 90 days, then open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go live. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. You must be at least 16, and mobile streaming has an additional 50-subscriber minimum.
Check whether your channel is eligible
Sign in to the YouTube channel you intend to use. YouTube’s general live-streaming eligibility guidance says the creator must be at least 16, the channel must be verified, and it must not have had a live-streaming restriction during the preceding 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
If you plan to stream from a phone or tablet, check the separate mobile requirement: YouTube Help says mobile live streaming requires at least 50 subscribers, in addition to verification and no relevant restriction. The 50-subscriber minimum applies to mobile streaming; it is not listed as a general requirement for webcam or encoder streams. Details are in YouTube’s mobile live-streaming instructions.
Enable live streaming
- Open YouTube Studio on a computer. Sign in to the eligible channel and select Create → Go live. You can also start through the YouTube app’s create/live flow when using mobile. Labels and prompts can change, so follow the current interface.
- Complete any activation prompts. If this is the channel’s first time enabling live streaming, allow up to 24 hours for activation. YouTube says that once live streaming is enabled, a stream can go live instantly. See YouTube’s encoder setup and first-time activation guidance.
- Choose how to stream. Select mobile, webcam, encoder, or a supported game console according to your device and the kind of broadcast you want to make.
- Run a test before an important broadcast. YouTube recommends testing a stream first; you can select public or unlisted visibility before it begins. Use a low-stakes test to check that the picture, sound, and intended stream method work.
Choose the streaming method that fits your setup
| Method | Best suited to | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile | Quick updates or a stream made directly from a phone or tablet | Requires at least 50 subscribers, as well as channel verification and no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. |
| Webcam | A straightforward computer broadcast | Requires a computer with a webcam. Buying a separate camera is not necessary if you already have suitable equipment. |
| Encoder | Gameplay, screen capture, overlays, or a setup with external audio/video equipment | Use YouTube Live Control Room to get a stream key, then enter that key in the encoder. Follow the encoder’s and YouTube’s setup prompts. |
| Game console | Streaming gameplay directly from a supported console | Follow the console-specific streaming instructions for the model you use. |
YouTube’s live-streaming tips cover the available methods and recommend trying a test stream. YouTube also says expensive equipment is not needed to get started; the webcam method is the one that specifically calls for a computer with a webcam.

Using an encoder: keep the stream key private
An encoder is useful when you want to send gameplay or a more produced video-and-audio setup. In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream settings to obtain the stream key, then enter it in your encoder’s stream settings. YouTube describes the key as the credential that lets the encoder send its feed to your stream. Treat it like a password: do not share it or show it on screen. You can review YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
If live streaming is not available yet
- You just enabled it: first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Wait for that window to pass before treating the delay as a setup failure.
- You are trying to stream from mobile: check that the channel has at least 50 subscribers, is verified, and has no live-streaming restriction from the preceding 90 days.
- The channel is not verified: complete channel verification, then retry the Go live flow.
- The channel had a live-streaming restriction: YouTube’s general eligibility guidance requires no live-streaming restriction during the prior 90 days. Check the channel’s status and applicable YouTube notices.
- You selected webcam but cannot proceed: confirm you are using a computer with a webcam, or choose another method that fits your equipment.
- The encoder does not connect: confirm that the stream key in the encoder matches the one shown in Live Control Room. If you suspect the key was exposed, use YouTube’s stream settings to replace or reset it, then update the encoder with the current key.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your uploads as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
