1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute“After a few hours” does not point to one universal FFmpeg or YouTube cutoff. The process may have exited, its input may have stalled, its output may have failed, or YouTube may be reporting an ingest or format problem. Compare FFmpeg’s logs and process state with the timestamped stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room at the moment the stream stopped; choose a fix only after identifying which part of the pipeline failed.
Start by locating where the stream stopped
Think of the stream as three connected stages: the source supplies video and audio, FFmpeg reads and sends them, and YouTube receives and processes the stream. A failure at any stage can look like “FFmpeg stopped sending.” The symptom alone cannot distinguish them.
- Check YouTube’s timestamped messages. Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and note the stream-health indicator, the exact error message, its severity, and the timestamp. YouTube says errors appear alongside stream health; unresolved errors continue to appear. Red errors are critical and may inhibit an event, while yellow errors may degrade quality. See YouTube’s live-stream error messages.
- Match the message time to FFmpeg’s log. Determine whether FFmpeg exited, remained running but stopped receiving input, or continued reading input while output stalled or errored. Those distinctions are diagnostic inferences; without the command, log, source type, and protocol, no particular cause can be established.
- Check whether the source still produces frames. If the source is a file, capture device, or another live stream, inspect that source at the failure time. A running FFmpeg process does not prove it is still receiving usable input.
- Compare the evidence across all three stages. A YouTube health error, an FFmpeg output error, and an input stall point to different parts of the pipeline. Do not change reconnect options, buffering, network settings, or encoder settings until the evidence identifies the relevant leg.
What YouTube’s health messages can tell you
Video starvation
YouTube’s Live Streaming API describes videoIngestionStarved as a condition in which YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming. Treat it as evidence of an incoming-video continuity problem, not as proof of why that continuity was lost. Check the source and FFmpeg’s input/output logs at the corresponding time. The API’s health and configuration issue descriptions are documented in LiveStreams.
Incorrect format
If Live Control Room reports an incorrect-format error, check the stream’s encoding configuration. YouTube’s guidance identifies H.264 video and AAC audio as the expected combination for proper ingestion. This is a targeted check for a format error, not a general cure for a process exit or network failure; consult YouTube’s error guidance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Account and event prerequisites
If you are troubleshooting a new or changed setup, verify that the channel meets YouTube’s live-streaming prerequisites and that you are within applicable active-stream limits. YouTube lists these on its live-streaming getting-started page. They do not establish a normal few-hour cutoff for FFmpeg streams.
Check FFmpeg’s input-rate behavior and reconnect options carefully
FFmpeg’s -re option, also called -readrate 1, controls input reading speed. FFmpeg cautions against using a low read-rate value with an actual capture device or live stream because it may cause packet loss. If your source is live or captured, inspect the command for an unsuitable read-rate setting before changing it. The behavior and warning are in the FFmpeg documentation.

FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes options such as reconnect and reconnect_on_network_error for HTTP client inputs. Those options should not be presented as an automatic fix for an RTMP output failure to YouTube: the documented options concern HTTP input behavior, not a universal output-recovery mechanism. See FFmpeg’s protocols documentation.
Common symptoms and the next check
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| FFmpeg has exited | Read the final log lines and identify the reported error or exit condition. A stopped process is different from a process that is still running but no longer receiving or sending media. |
| FFmpeg remains active, but the input has stopped advancing | Check whether the source itself is still producing frames and whether the command applies a low -readrate to a live or capture input. |
| Input continues, but FFmpeg reports an output or network error | Use the exact output error and protocol to investigate the sending leg. Do not assume HTTP input reconnect settings repair an RTMP output connection. |
| YouTube reports video starvation | Check incoming video continuity at the matching timestamp. The health label describes what YouTube is receiving, not the underlying cause. |
| YouTube reports incorrect format | Check the encoder configuration for H.264 video and AAC audio, as YouTube’s error guidance specifies. |
| No clear dashboard error identifies the failure | Align the dashboard timestamps with FFmpeg logs and source status. Without those details, selecting a specific fix would be speculation. |
There is no established few-hour cutoff
YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance covers account prerequisites and active-stream limits, but it does not establish a standard point after which FFmpeg streams stop. Nor does a long-stream viewer limitation explain a sender stopping: YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. That is a rewind limitation for viewers, not evidence that YouTube stops receiving video after a few hours. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded video without leaving a computer on at home, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera, and streams to YouTube only. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it includes 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, with one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Visit StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
