During a test, check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health. These checks help distinguish an unstable network path from a stream-configuration problem; a disconnect alone does not identify the cause.
Start by identifying what is failing
In OBS, watch the dropped-frames counter and connection indicator while streaming. OBS says dropped frames mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. An increasing counter alongside a yellow or red connection indicator points to a connection that is unstable or cannot sustain the bitrate; enough dropped frames can disconnect the stream. This does not, by itself, prove OBS is defective: OBS connects to the streaming platform, and OBS Project does not provide the stream server. The OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated 2024-09-30, says: “It is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames.” In context, that guidance points to the connection between your computer and the remote ingest server, not a claim that software can never contribute to a disconnect.
Check YouTube’s stream health at the same time. OBS notes that viewers may report buffering even when the streamer is not dropping frames, so viewer playback trouble and an encoder-to-ingest disconnect may require different fixes. YouTube’s health messages can flag excessive bitrate, a long keyframe interval, unsupported video configuration, or insufficient incoming video.
Match bitrate and encoder settings to the stream
Choose a bitrate your upload can sustain
OBS suggests lowering the video bitrate and gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting estimate. Treat that as a starting point, not a guarantee: the useful target is one your connection can sustain steadily, with capacity left for other network traffic. YouTube likewise recommends testing upload bitrate and choosing a quality that is reliable for the connection.

YouTube’s encoder recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. The figures below are YouTube-published technical recommendations, not measurements of typical upload speeds or disconnection rates. The Help page does not display a publication date; it was verified on 2026-10-03.
| Output | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended | AV1 or H.265/HEVC minimum | AV1 or H.265/HEVC recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
Use the row matching your actual output and codec. A recommended figure is not a requirement to raise bitrate: if the upload connection cannot sustain it, lower the bitrate or output quality and test again.

Check rate control, keyframes, and protocol
For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube lists constant bitrate (CBR) and recommends keyframes every 2 seconds; the interval should not exceed 4 seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its listed supported video codecs are H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, up to 60 fps. In OBS, confirm the output resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec, and keyframe interval are appropriate for the stream you intend to send. YouTube’s full encoder guidance is in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Run a test and use YouTube’s stream health messages
Before an important broadcast, run a representative test with audio and motion similar to the intended program. Monitor stream health in YouTube Live Control Room and read its messages during the test; Google’s Live stream health-status reference lists configuration warnings including excessive bitrate, long keyframe intervals, unsupported video settings, and insufficient incoming video. That reference was last updated 2026-09-14 UTC.

- If OBS shows rising dropped frames and a yellow or red connection indicator, investigate bitrate and the network path.
- If YouTube reports a bitrate, keyframe, or video-configuration problem, correct the indicated setting and test again.
- If YouTube reports insufficient incoming video, check whether OBS is actually sending a continuous signal and whether the connection is interrupting delivery.
- If viewers report buffering but OBS shows no dropped frames, do not assume the encoder-to-ingest connection is the problem; OBS notes that viewer-side playback can buffer independently.
Isolate network causes in a controlled order
Try another ingest server and review OBS network options
- If the streaming service offers an alternate server, test it and compare the dropped-frames counter and YouTube stream health.
- In OBS, open Settings → Advanced → Network and confirm Bind to IP is set to Default.
- As a diagnostic, OBS lists IPv4 Only as an option. Test it; if it makes no difference, restore IPv4 and IPv6.
- On Windows, test the available network optimization and TCP pacing options. Change one variable at a time so you can tell whether it affected the disconnects.
- OBS’s dynamic bitrate adjustment can lower bitrate during congestion and reduce dropped frames. It does not fix the underlying network issue and can reduce stream quality.
See the OBS Project’s connection troubleshooting guide for its current troubleshooting recommendations.
Temporarily isolate VPN, security, and network-prioritization software
Test with VPN software disabled. Firewall or antivirus software can interfere with streaming; if a controlled test shows that one is responsible, add an OBS exception and re-enable protection rather than leaving security disabled. OBS also warns that bundled network software may deprioritize OBS. Check network drivers from your computer or motherboard manufacturer if that possibility fits your setup.

Check Wi-Fi and the physical network path
OBS recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. If Wi-Fi is suspect, test over Ethernet before buying equipment. Also consider the modem or router connection, cables, network card, switches, and extenders; a fault in any part of the path can interrupt delivery. Isolate equipment methodically, and consult your ISP if the issue persists or you are unsure whether hardware needs replacing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep useful evidence if the disconnections continue
If these checks do not resolve intermittent disconnections, OBS recommends contacting your ISP and describing the symptoms specifically. To make the report actionable, note when each interruption occurred, whether OBS’s dropped-frames counter rose, what YouTube stream health reported, whether you used Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and the bitrate and resolution tested. This record helps the ISP investigate the route and service without assuming the cause in advance.
