For a completed removal you believe was mistaken or misidentified, YouTube’s formal challenge is a copyright counter notification—not a standard Content ID appeal. It is a legal request, and YouTube shares the information you submit with the claimant.
Identify what YouTube did before choosing a response
Different copyright actions have different remedies. Open YouTube Studio and read the notice and status before submitting anything. A live interruption alone does not establish that a copyright strike was applied.

YouTube’s live-stream guidance and strike instructions are in Copyright issues with live streams and Understand copyright strikes. Interface labels and available actions may change, so follow the current Studio notice.
Know the difference between a Content ID appeal and a counter notification
If a Content ID dispute is rejected, YouTube may let you appeal the claim. The claimant has seven days to respond to that appeal. If the claimant rejects it, they may submit a copyright removal request; if YouTube finds that request valid, the content is removed and a strike is applied. If you still believe the resulting removal was mistaken, the counter-notification process is the next distinct route.

A counter notification challenges a completed copyright removal. It is a legal request, not simply another escalation of a Content ID claim. YouTube does not decide ownership or mediate for rights holders. Read YouTube’s guidance on disputing a Content ID claim and submitting a copyright counter notification before acting.
Decide whether a counter notification fits your case
Use this route only if you have a good-faith, fact-based reason to say the removal was a mistake or misidentification. YouTube gives examples such as mistaken identification or a possible copyright exception, including fair use, fair dealing, or public domain. Whether an exception applies depends on the facts and relevant law; merely crediting the owner, owning a copy, or using only a short excerpt does not by itself establish that a use is lawful.

- Gather the facts that support your position: for example, documentation of permission, evidence that you own the material, or a specific explanation of why the material was misidentified.
- Be precise about what was used and why you believe its removal was mistaken. Do not make claims you cannot support.
- Consider the privacy consequence before proceeding: YouTube requires personal contact details and says it shares the counter notification with the claimant.
- If you are unsure about the legal basis, disclosure of your details, or possible court or tribunal action, consider advice from a qualified attorney familiar with the relevant jurisdiction.
Submit a counter notification in YouTube Studio
YouTube’s computer instructions direct creators through Studio. The exact interface can change; use the live eligibility prompts and notice if a label or option differs.
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Open Content and filter the list by Copyright.
- Find the item marked Removed, open its copyright details, and select the counter-notification action if it is available.
- Enter the required contact details, including your full legal name and physical address.
- Provide a clear, concise explanation of why the removal was mistaken or the material was misidentified. State the relevant facts and basis accurately; do not treat a possible exception as an automatic defense.
- Review and agree to the required legal statements, then sign using your full legal name and submit.
The original uploader should submit the request, or an authorized representative—such as an attorney—may submit on the uploader’s behalf. YouTube says it forwards a valid counter notification to the claimant, including the information submitted. Do not submit false information: YouTube warns that misuse may lead to account termination or other legal consequences. See the full counter-notification requirements.

What happens after YouTube forwards it
If YouTube finds the counter notification valid, it forwards it to the claimant. The claimant then has 10 US business days to provide evidence of legal action taken to keep the content from being reinstated. YouTube lists examples such as a lawsuit, court order, Copyright Claims Board claim, or a determination of infringement from that Board.
- If the claimant provides the required evidence in time, the content is not reinstated while legal action is pending. YouTube may resolve the associated strike while leaving the content removed.
- If the claimant does not respond within that period, YouTube says the content may be reinstated unless you deleted it. Later evidence of legal action can still result in the content being removed again.
These are YouTube’s descriptions of its process, not a prediction about the merits of a particular dispute or the law in every country. Review YouTube’s explanation of the response period and seek legal advice for a complex dispute or a possible proceeding.

Other ways to resolve a copyright strike
- Ask for retraction. Contact the claimant and ask them to retract the copyright removal request. YouTube explains the option in its copyright strike resolution guidance.
- Complete Copyright School and wait. YouTube says a strike can expire after 90 days if you complete Copyright School. Expiry does not restore the removed video.
- Act during a scheduled removal window. If the notice is still scheduled, review its deadline and eligible actions. YouTube says deleting the content during the seven-day period can avoid the strike; deleting it after removal does not resolve an applied strike.
Prevent another interruption on a gaming stream
Before a future broadcast, check that gameplay, music, overlays, trailers, cutscenes, and other third-party material are covered by the relevant rights or permissions. A game purchase or permission to play does not automatically establish permission for every soundtrack or other included material. If you have licensed third-party content, YouTube says to ask its owner to add your channel to the Content ID allowlist; a license without allowlisting may not stop live detection.
For a specific claim, preserve the notice and relevant documentation, and use the process that matches the action shown in Studio. YouTube’s process pages do not determine the legal merits of an individual use.
