Start by checking YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and comparing it with what your encoder shows locally. If the encoder preview and local recording look clean but YouTube reports delivery problems, investigate upload bandwidth and the connection. If the picture or sound is already bad in the encoder, check the source, software and system load first. Viewer buffering can be a separate playback issue, not a fault in your broadcast.
Why is my YouTube live stream unstable?
“Unstable” can mean a problem sending the stream to YouTube, or a problem one or more viewers have receiving it. Diagnose which side is affected before changing settings or equipment.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Inspect stream health, status and any specific errors shown on the live dashboard. YouTube reports real-time stream-health information there. See Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream and See your live stream’s metrics.
- Compare the encoder preview. Check the outgoing picture and sound in your encoder and, if enabled, the local recording. If those are already faulty, the issue is likely earlier in your setup than YouTube delivery.
- Ask who is affected. One viewer’s error may be local to that viewer’s device or connection. Several viewers on one shared network may have a shared-network problem. Reports from viewers on different connections make an encoder or stream problem more plausible. Viewer reports help direct the next test, but do not prove the cause.

How do I check whether upload speed is enough?
Check upload speed and reliability, not just download speed. A speed test may show a much higher download result than upload result, while your encoder needs to send data out. YouTube says the stream’s total bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room. Other people and devices sharing the same home or office connection reduce the capacity available to your stream; a primary and backup stream also use outbound bandwidth.

Run an upload test under conditions similar to the broadcast, including the same connection and other network use where possible. Compare the result with the encoder’s total outgoing bitrate and leave the recommended headroom. A single speed-test result does not establish that the connection will remain reliable throughout an event. YouTube notes that connectivity disruptions can break a stream; if upload problems persist, contact your internet service provider. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
If you use Wi-Fi and suspect the wireless path, compare it with a wired connection if practical. An Ethernet cable is a diagnostic option, not a fix for a provider outage, encoder fault or YouTube-side problem.

What bitrate and encoder settings should I use?
Choose settings your connection can sustain consistently, then test them at the resolution and frame rate you intend to broadcast. A higher resolution or frame rate generally needs more bitrate. The figures below are YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations; they are not a guarantee that your internet connection can carry them. The recommendations may change, so check YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions before a broadcast.

These are YouTube Help figures; the page lists separate rates for AV1 and H.265/HEVC. Do not apply the H.264 rates to those codecs. YouTube’s published guidance specifies constant bitrate (CBR), recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. It supports H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 with RTMP/RTMPS under the conditions described on its settings page.

- If the upload test is marginal for your chosen bitrate, reduce resolution, frame rate or bitrate rather than insisting on a rate the connection cannot sustain reliably.
- Account for total outbound use, including audio, other network traffic and any backup stream, when checking available capacity.
- Use the current YouTube table for the selected codec and output format; do not assume one bitrate fits all resolutions, frame rates and codecs.
YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple playback formats for viewers, so the encoder’s ingest settings are not the only playback quality viewers may see.
How do I find an encoder or source problem?
If the encoder preview or local archive is also poor, work through the local signal path before changing network settings.

- Inspect sources and routing: confirm the intended camera, game capture, microphone and audio routing are selected and producing a clean signal.
- Read encoder errors and check system load: look for warnings or failures in the encoder and check whether CPU load is unusually high during the problem.
- Update the encoder: use its latest version, then test again. YouTube suggests trying a different encoder if local inspection does not reveal the cause.
- Check the local recording: if enabled, verify that the file exists and inspect the part recorded during the fault. A healthy local recording alongside a poor YouTube stream points toward delivery rather than capture, though it does not by itself identify the exact network cause.
If a third-party application signs in without requiring a stream key but will not start a broadcast, YouTube advises contacting that software’s support team; it may need an update to work with YouTube Live.

- SSL error: verify that the server URL uses the RTMPS protocol and is the correct address. If it is correct, YouTube says to try port 443.
- “Failed to connect to server — connection timed out”: check the server URL first, then confirm that your encoder supports RTMPS. If it does not, consult the encoder maker’s documentation and YouTube’s protocol compatibility instructions.
- Connection still fails: check stream health for the specific error, confirm the encoder is using the current stream details from Live Control Room, and test outbound connectivity.
How should I test and monitor before going live?
Test with audio and video movement similar to the planned broadcast. YouTube recommends setting up an encoder stream at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. These are preparation recommendations, not required waiting periods.
- Set the intended resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate in the encoder.
- Start the encoder in advance and preview the stream in Live Control Room before the event.
- Check sound and moving video locally and in the YouTube preview; monitor stream health for errors.
- During the broadcast, keep an eye on audio, video and stream-health status. Confirm that a local archive exists and continues growing if you are recording one.
- If using failover, test it before the event by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then confirm that the player switches to the backup.

What if viewers are buffering but the stream health is good?
Viewer buffering does not automatically mean your encoder is failing. Ask affected viewers to try another internet connection and device-side troubleshooting before changing your broadcast settings. YouTube’s playback troubleshooting guidance covers viewer-side steps.
Broadcast delay also affects playback resilience. YouTube says default delay is best for minimizing interruptions; lower delay leaves less buffer and may make playback interruptions more likely, while prioritizing reduced live spoilers. This is separate from encoder latency configuration: do not change encoder settings just because one viewer reports buffering.
