Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor an FFmpeg stream that loses its RTMP output connection, configure the output through FFmpeg’s fifo muxer and enable attempt_recovery. The FIFO muxer can retry the output after a failure; it cannot guarantee that YouTube keeps the same live event open or that viewers experience uninterrupted playback.
Configure FFmpeg to retry its RTMP output
FFmpeg’s documented network-outage pattern wraps an FLV output in the FIFO muxer. Adapt this command to your input, stream mapping, encoding settings, YouTube ingest URL, and private stream key:
ffmpeg -re -i INPUT
-c:v libx264 -c:a aac
-f fifo -fifo_format flv
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1
-attempt_recovery 1
-recovery_wait_time 1
-map 0:v -map 0:a
rtmp://INGEST_SERVER/live/STREAM_KEY
The example follows the output-recovery pattern in the FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation. Replace INPUT with your source, select the appropriate -map options, and use the RTMP ingest address and stream key provided by YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the stream key private.
What the recovery options do
-f fiforoutes the output through FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer;-fifo_format flvspecifies FLV as the underlying format used for this RTMP pattern.-attempt_recovery 1enables attempts to recover the output after a failure, particularly for network output.-recovery_wait_time 1sets the wait before another attempt after an unsuccessful recovery attempt. The documented example uses one second; treat it as an example, not a universal best setting.-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1lets processing continue by dropping packets if the FIFO queue fills. This favors continued processing over preserving every queued packet, so stream content can be omitted.
Choose how to handle a full queue
Dropping packets can help FFmpeg keep processing during output trouble, but may leave a gap in the stream. Without packet dropping, the documented default behavior can block the encoder while the muxer processes queued packets. Choose based on your tolerance for missing content, the likely duration of an outage, and whether your source can be buffered or replayed.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The FIFO documentation also describes restart_with_keyframe, an option to wait for a keyframe after recovery or queue overflow. Whether it is appropriate depends on the encoding and receiving behavior. Check the documentation and test the result with your actual configuration before using it for a broadcast.
Why HTTP reconnect flags are not the fix for this output failure
FFmpeg’s -reconnect options in the protocol documentation concern HTTP protocol reconnection behavior, especially for reading HTTP inputs. They do not, by themselves, recover an RTMP output connection. If the problem is a failed RTMP write, configure recovery around the output with the FIFO muxer instead.

Diagnose a failed recovery
- Read the FFmpeg log. Establish whether the input ended or failed, or whether FFmpeg encountered an output write or network error. Output recovery cannot fix a source that has stopped producing data.
- Check the output wrapper and format. For the documented RTMP pattern, confirm that the output uses
-f fifoand-fifo_format flv. - Verify the FIFO options in your installed build. Option availability and behavior can vary by FFmpeg version. Consult the local muxer help and the documentation matching your build.
- Review the queue policy. If the queue overflows, packet dropping can omit content; allowing backpressure can block processing. Adjust the choice to your use case.
- Test an actual interruption in a controlled stream. Confirm that FFmpeg retries and resumes output under the network conditions you expect before relying on it in production.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room after reconnection. The available documentation does not establish whether a particular RTMP reconnect preserves the same live event or how quickly viewers resume playback. Verify the event status rather than assuming recovery was seamless.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a computer at home to keep the stream running, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo automatically attempts recovery if YouTube drops the stream, though that is not a promise of uninterrupted viewer playback or event continuity.
- One flat price per slot for any uploaded quality, up to 4K 60fps; the video streams as uploaded, with no re-encoding or quality tiers.
- Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, and support from the StreamNeo team.
- The first day is free with no card, once per account. After that, plans can be billed for a day, week, month, six months, or year, and can be cancelled at any time. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. Contact support for five or more slots.
- The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
To try it, start your free first day with StreamNeo.
