What’s actually slowing this PC down?

First, check OBS’s dropped-frames counter. If it is rising, troubleshoot the connection from your computer to YouTube or lower the stream bitrate. If it is not rising, check whether buffering is limited to viewers, or whether OBS’s own preview and recording are choppy: those symptoms point to different causes and fixes.
Identify where the buffering happens
“Buffering” can describe three different problems. Diagnose the symptom before changing settings; a viewer’s playback issue does not automatically mean OBS is losing its connection.
| What you see | Likely area to investigate |
|---|---|
| OBS’s dropped-frames counter rises | The connection from OBS to YouTube’s ingest server, including whether the bitrate exceeds stable upload capacity. OBS connection troubleshooting |
| OBS is not dropping frames, but some viewers report buffering | Viewer networks or devices, or YouTube latency settings. OBS guidance on viewer buffering |
| OBS preview or local recording is choppy | Rendering or encoding performance, including GPU load and scene complexity. OBS encoding performance guidance |
Fix rising dropped frames in OBS
Check the dropped-frames counter at the bottom of the OBS window while streaming. OBS defines dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; enough dropped frames can disconnect the stream. Its connection troubleshooting guide treats this primarily as a network-path problem, not a preview-performance problem.
- Lower the bitrate in OBS. Open Settings → Output and reduce the video bitrate, then test again. OBS’s troubleshooting page, dated 2024-09-30, suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point—not a guarantee. Use stable upload capacity rather than a brief peak. YouTube also advises leaving 20% bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate; include primary and backup feeds where applicable. See OBS’s guidance and YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Use Ethernet if practical. OBS warns that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. Check the cable and network hardware, and restart the modem or router if you suspect a general connectivity issue. A wired connection is a troubleshooting step, not a universal cure.
- Test another ingest server, if available. If the problem changes with the server, the route to a particular ingest point may be involved. Trying a different streaming service can also serve as a diagnostic comparison; it is not a required permanent change.
- Check software that can interfere with network traffic. Review VPN, firewall or antivirus settings, bundled network-prioritization tools, and network drivers. OBS notes that some vendor utilities can deprioritize OBS traffic. Change one suspected factor at a time and retest rather than disabling several protections at once.
- On Windows, consider OBS’s network options. OBS documents network optimizations, TCP pacing, and dynamic bitrate adjustment as options to test. Dynamic bitrate may lower quality and will not fix the underlying connection; OBS labels the option beta in its guide. Use it as a mitigation, not proof that the connection is healthy.
- Contact your ISP if local checks do not help. Congestion or routing problems may be outside your computer and OBS’s control.
Match bitrate to YouTube’s recommendations
Use the recommendation for your actual codec, resolution, and frame rate. The following figures are YouTube’s recommended live ingest bitrates, checked on 2026-10-03; the page does not display a publication year. They are platform recommendations, not evidence that your connection can sustain that rate. YouTube also lists minimum bitrate ranges, which should not be confused with its recommended values. | Codec | Resolution and frame rate | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
In OBS, YouTube’s live encoder recommendations call for CBR bitrate encoding and a keyframe interval of two seconds (not more than four seconds). YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. OBS’s available settings and encoders vary by installed version and hardware, so select only options your build supports. If the recommended bitrate produces dropped frames, prioritize a stable stream: lower the bitrate or output demand and test again while preserving YouTube’s recommended bandwidth headroom.
If viewers buffer but OBS shows no dropped frames
OBS notes that viewers can report lag, buffering, or constant loading even when OBS is not dropping frames. Viewers have different networks, devices, and locations, so one person’s playback problem does not by itself show that your OBS-to-YouTube connection is failing. YouTube transcodes live streams into viewer output formats, but playback conditions still vary by device and network. OBS’s viewer-buffering guidance and YouTube’s live settings guidance.

- Ask affected viewers to try another network or device. This helps distinguish a local playback issue from a problem that affects the stream more broadly.
- Review YouTube’s latency setting. Lower latency can increase playback buffering, so weigh faster interaction against playback stability. See YouTube’s latency guidance.
- If OBS’s counter remains stable and other viewers can watch normally, do not lower your bitrate solely because one viewer reports buffering; first check that viewer’s playback conditions and the latency trade-off.
If OBS preview or recording is choppy
When the preview or a local recording already looks or sounds poor, investigate rendering and encoding before treating it as an upload problem. YouTube advises checking the encoder, dashboard errors, CPU load, and a local archive; if encoder output looks healthy, then investigate the outbound connection. YouTube live troubleshooting
- Reduce output resolution or frame rate; try 30 fps if 60 fps is unstable.
- Reduce game graphics load, simplify OBS scenes, and remove or limit resource-heavy browser sources and filters.
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator when GPU overload is the suspected cause.
These changes reduce rendering or encoding demands; they will not repair an unstable network route. OBS’s encoding performance guide explains the GPU-overload troubleshooting path.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | First check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames rise in OBS | Is the configured bitrate within stable upload capacity, with headroom? | Lower bitrate, test Ethernet or another ingest server, then check network software and contact your ISP if needed. |
| Viewers buffer; OBS counter stays steady | Does the issue affect particular viewers, devices, or networks? | Test another device or network and review YouTube latency settings. |
| Preview or local recording is choppy | Are there encoder errors or high CPU/GPU load? | Reduce resolution or frame rate, scene complexity, or game graphics load. |

Copyright and YouTube live rules still apply
Changing how a video is delivered does not establish that you have the right to stream it. Before broadcasting gameplay, music, or other recordings, check the applicable rights and YouTube’s current rules; a technically stable stream can still face copyright or policy issues. Use the copyright safety checklist as a practical pre-stream check.
