First compare the video file with a private YouTube test stream of that same file. If the sound and picture are already misaligned during local playback, fix the file; if they line up locally but not on the stream, investigate the playback and encoder path. Check the beginning and a later passage before changing settings: a steady offset and a mismatch that grows over time are different symptoms, but neither identifies a cause on its own.
Find out where the sync problem starts
- Play the exact source file locally. Choose a passage with a clear cue, such as a spoken word, music beat, or visible action. Note whether its sound and picture align.
- Run a private test stream using that same file and setup. Use the same playback method, encoder, and OBS scene intended for the broadcast. Compare the same cue in the stream.
- Check twice. Compare a passage near the start and another later on. If the gap seems steady, record that observation; if it grows, record that too. These patterns help describe the fault, but do not prove what caused it.
- Keep a copy of the working OBS profile and change one relevant setting at a time. Repeat the test after each change so you can tell whether it helped.
YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream and monitoring stream health. Its guidance puts it plainly: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” A test with representative content is more useful than changing settings based on a single impression.
If the file is already out of sync
Correct or replace the source file before troubleshooting the live encoder. Changing stream settings cannot reliably repair a mismatch that is present in the recording itself.
If local playback is aligned but the stream is not
Focus on the playback and encoding path, OBS configuration, and the audio configuration used for the stream. Continue testing with the same source and cue; do not assume one particular OBS setting or sync-offset value is a universal fix.

Check the encoder settings YouTube documents
Use YouTube’s published live-encoder guidance as a configuration checklist, not as a guarantee that compliant settings will correct synchronization. For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio. Its recommended audio sample rate is 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1 surround sound. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Confirm which protocol and audio format your encoder is using.
- Check that the audio sample rate matches the channel format: 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1, following YouTube’s recommendation.
- Check the keyframe interval: two seconds recommended, with a maximum of four seconds.
- Test stream quality against the available upload connection and monitor YouTube’s stream-health information.
These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations; meeting them does not establish that the source, playback chain, or output is synchronized.

Separate sync faults from performance and connection problems
Look for OBS rendering or encoding pressure
If the source file is aligned but the live output is not, check OBS performance indicators and its troubleshooting guidance. OBS notes that resource pressure, including GPU load, can affect rendering and encoding. A demanding scene or source can be useful to investigate, but do not conclude that overload caused the sync issue unless your own indicators or logs support that diagnosis.
Treat dropped frames as a separate clue
OBS defines dropped frames as a symptom of an unstable connection or a connection that cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Dropped frames alone do not prove that audio and video are out of sync. Check connection stability and YouTube’s stream-health messages if frames are dropping, while separately checking whether sound lines up with the picture. YouTube’s Live Streaming API health-status guidance also describes configuration and delivery issues, including receiving too little video for smooth streaming.

Do not mistake delivery latency for audio/video offset
YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because HLS sends video in segments. That describes delay in delivery; it does not establish that HLS creates a relative audio/video offset within the program.
Apply one change, then verify it
- Play the source locally and check a clear speech, music, or action cue.
- Test that same file through the intended encoder and scene in a private stream. Check one passage near the start and another later.
- If the local file is misaligned, correct the file first. If only the stream differs, inspect the playback and encoder path and the relevant audio configuration.
- Compare OBS performance and connection indicators with YouTube stream health. Investigate resource pressure or dropped frames when the indicators support those branches; do not treat either symptom as automatic proof of a sync cause.
- Change one relevant setting and repeat the same test. Keep the change only if the result improves when you recheck the same cue. Avoid applying a large sync offset based on one impression.
- Before going public, run a new private test and check both the beginning and a later portion.
The right correction depends on where the mismatch enters the chain: the source file, playback, audio configuration, encoder, or delivery path. The official guidance does not establish an exact OBS offset for this pre-recorded-video workflow or a single correction that works in every case.
