OBS has no documented setting that guarantees gapless playback or crossfades between playlist files. For separate clips, use a VLC Video source; if the black gaps remain and uninterrupted presentation matters, try joining the clips into one continuous file and playing it through a Media Source. That workaround is a practical inference, not a tested or OBS-certified fix.
Why black gaps can appear between playlist videos
OBS treats a playlist as separate media items. The official documentation describes playlist, looping, shuffle and visibility controls, but it does not document a gapless-playback or crossfade option between items. The YouTube destination does not provide a playlist setting that controls these OBS transitions; the relevant configuration is in OBS.
First distinguish a gap at a file boundary from a different problem: if the OBS preview looks correct but only the stream output turns black, investigate that output issue separately. The available OBS source documentation does not establish that YouTube causes or fixes playlist gaps.
Set up a VLC Video playlist in OBS
- Install VLC with the same architecture as OBS. The VLC Video source requires VLC. For 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- Add the playlist source. In the OBS Sources dock, select the add-source control and choose VLC Video. Load the video files and arrange them in the order you want. OBS’s Sources Guide describes VLC as the option for a playlist when VLC is installed: OBS Sources Guide.
- Check playlist behavior. In the source properties, review Loop Playlist if the list should restart after its final item and Shuffle Playlist if you want items in a changing order. For a deliberate sequence, leave shuffle off.
- Check visibility behavior. Review Visibility Behaviour to see how playback responds when the source becomes hidden or visible. This affects playback in relation to scene visibility; it is not a documented gap-removal control.
- Test the transitions you care about. Preview the full sequence in the actual scene and make a short recording or stream test before relying on it live. Verify both the file boundaries and what happens when the source is hidden and shown again.
Choose between a playlist and one prepared video file

If you choose the second approach, join or render the clips in a video editor, then add the result as a Media Source. Test the rendered file in the scene and in a recording or stream. OBS documents Media Source and VLC Video as different source types, but this recommendation to pre-join clips is an inference rather than a tested OBS fix. Settings that are easy to mistake for gap fixes
- Network caching (ms): The VLC source documents a default of 400 ms. The documentation does not say that increasing this value removes gaps between local playlist files, so it should not be treated as a proven fix for local-file boundaries.
- Show nothing when playback ends: This Media Source option concerns what happens after an individual file ends; it is not described as a control for transitions between VLC playlist items.
- Close file when inactive: OBS documents this Media Source option. Reopening a file after the source becomes visible again can mean a short reload delay, so consider visibility behavior when diagnosing black output after switching scenes.
Troubleshoot the symptom
- A gap appears only between playlist items: Confirm the source is VLC Video and the playlist order is correct. OBS does not document a gapless toggle. Try preparing the clips as one file and testing it with Media Source.
- The playlist does not appear or play: Check that VLC is installed and its architecture matches OBS. Then reopen the VLC Video source properties and confirm the intended files are loaded.
- The list stops at the last item: Enable Loop Playlist if you want the list to restart when it runs out.
- Items play in an unexpected order: Check whether Shuffle Playlist is enabled and turn it off for a fixed sequence.
- Playback changes after switching scenes: Review Visibility Behaviour for VLC Video, or the relevant playback options such as Close file when inactive for Media Source. Test the actual scene-switching pattern.
- Preview is fine but the YouTube stream is black: Treat this as a separate output-path problem. The playlist and media-source documentation does not identify YouTube as the cause or offer a YouTube-side setting for OBS file-boundary gaps.
