How Much Data Does a Pre-Recorded YouTube Live Stream Use Per Day?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It depends on whether you mean watching the stream or broadcasting prerecorded footage as a live stream. For a viewer, estimate daily data by multiplying the actual playback bitrate in Mbps by 10.8: at 2 Mbps, that is about 21.6 GB over 24 hours; at 5 Mbps, about 54 GB. Those are arithmetic estimates, not YouTube-published playback averages. For a broadcaster, YouTube gives a separate mobile-streaming rule of thumb: about 10 MB per minute, or roughly 14.4 GB of upload data for 24 hours of continuous streaming.

Watching and broadcasting use data in different directions

When you watch a live stream, your device downloads the video. When you broadcast prerecorded footage as a live stream, your encoder or streaming service uploads video to YouTube. These figures are not interchangeable: YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into different output formats for viewers, so the broadcaster’s ingestion bitrate does not automatically equal a viewer’s playback bitrate. YouTube’s live encoder guidance describes source-side recommendations, not a guaranteed viewer data rate.

Estimate a viewer’s data use per day

For a full 24 hours, multiply the actual playback bitrate in megabits per second (Mbps) by 10.8 to get approximate decimal gigabytes (GB): Mbps × 86,400 seconds ÷ 8 bits per byte ÷ 1,000 megabytes per gigabyte = Mbps × 10.8 GB/day.

Actual playback bitrate Estimated data for 24 hours
2 Mbps About 21.6 GB
5 Mbps About 54 GB

These examples are calculations from the assumed bitrate, not measured YouTube averages. For a shorter daily watch time, multiply the bitrate by hours watched and by 0.45 to estimate decimal GB: for example, 2 Mbps × 8 hours × 0.45 is about 7.2 GB.

How to measure your own playback

  1. Set YouTube to the quality you expect to watch, or leave quality on Auto if that reflects your usual viewing.
  2. Record the device or mobile carrier data counter before playback, then watch for a representative period on the same network and device.
  3. Check the counter afterward and scale the measured data by your expected daily watch time. Keep the same quality and network conditions in mind when applying the result.

Ads, app traffic, buffering, and how a device or carrier rounds or reports usage can make observed totals differ from the bitrate calculation.

Why resolution and connection-speed recommendations are not data-use figures

YouTube’s playback troubleshooting guidance recommends sustained connection speeds of 20 Mbps for 4K, 5 Mbps for 1080p, 2.5 Mbps for 720p, 1.1 Mbps for 480p, and 0.7 Mbps for 360p. These are recommendations for the connection needed to play those qualities, not actual playback bitrates or measured data consumption. Treating one as a rough proxy in the formula may help with planning, but label it as a proxy rather than a YouTube data-use figure. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance lists the recommendations.

On the broadcast side, YouTube publishes encoder ingestion recommendations by resolution, frame rate, and codec; it also lists 128 Kbps stereo audio as an advanced encoder setting. These settings describe what a source sends to YouTube. They do not determine the exact bitrate delivered to each viewer.

If you are broadcasting prerecorded footage as a live stream

YouTube Help’s Filming tips – Live gives mobile live broadcasters a rule of thumb of about 10 MB per minute of streaming. If that rate continued for 24 hours, the arithmetic works out to about 14.4 GB of upload data. This is YouTube’s approximate guidance for streaming from a mobile device, not a universal rate for every encoder or for viewers downloading a stream; actual use can vary with the setup.

For an encoder or other broadcast setup, check its configured output bitrate and duration to estimate upload use with the same formula. Allow bandwidth headroom for reliability: YouTube recommends 20% extra upload bandwidth, and notes that other users on a shared network can reduce what is available to the streamer. That headroom concerns stream reliability; it is not an additional multiplier for a viewer’s daily data estimate. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
