Use OBS’s built-in Media Source when one local video is enough, including when you want that file to repeat. Use VLC Video when you want a playlist of multiple local files, in a set order or shuffled. VLC must be installed for VLC Video to appear, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Neither playback source by itself keeps a YouTube broadcast online if the computer, connection, OBS, or stream connection fails.
Which OBS source should you use?
| Decision | Media Source | VLC Video |
|---|---|---|
| Content | One local media file | A playlist of media items |
| Repeat | Loop repeats the individual file; documented default is off | Loop Playlist repeats after the playlist ends; documented default is on |
| Order | No multi-file playlist control | Playlist order by default; Shuffle Playlist is off by default |
| Dependency | Built into OBS; no VLC dependency is listed for this source | Requires VLC installed. OBS documentation says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC |
| Other documented controls | Hardware decoding, playback speed, YUV range, source visibility and file handling | Visibility behavior, network caching, audio track and subtitle settings |
| Best fit | One long study video or one file you want to repeat | A rotating library of study videos |
These controls and defaults are from OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation, dated 2022-01-11. Labels and defaults can vary by version, so check your installed OBS interface.
Set up one looping study video with Media Source
- In OBS, select the scene for your study stream. In the Sources panel, click the plus button and choose Media Source.
- Create a new source, give it a recognizable name, and confirm.
- In the source properties, select the local file you want to play. OBS lists video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM; actual playback can depend on the file encoding and your system.
- Enable Loop if the file should restart after it finishes. OBS documents this setting as off by default.
- Check the preview and audio before starting the broadcast. If playback does not work, try a file encoded in a format supported by your system and verify that the file path is valid.
Set up a playlist with VLC Video
- Install VLC before configuring the source. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC; OBS says the architectures must match for 64-bit use.
- In OBS, select the scene, click the plus button in Sources, and choose VLC Video. If the source is missing, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
- Add the local files to the source playlist in the order you want them played.
- Leave Loop Playlist enabled to repeat the playlist after it ends. OBS documents it as on by default. Leave Shuffle Playlist disabled for a predictable study schedule; its documented default is off.
- Review Visibility Behaviour. The documented default is to stop when the source is not visible and restart when it becomes visible. If you switch scenes, choose deliberately whether playback should stop, pause, or continue while hidden.
- Test the complete playlist and audio in OBS before going live. OBS documents network caching as 400 ms by default, but does not provide a general recommendation to change it.
OBS describes VLC Video this way: “Unlike Media Source, you can create a playlist of items, similar to an Image Slideshow.” The feature details are in the OBS Media Sources guide.
What looping does—and does not—keep online
A loop or playlist controls what OBS plays; it is not a stream-uptime or recovery feature. OBS connects from your computer directly to YouTube or another streaming destination. OBS warns that an unstable connection or inadequate capacity can cause dropped frames, but it does not promise 24/7 uptime. The computer running OBS, the internet connection, and the broadcast itself still need attention. See the OBS Help Portal for its connection guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A VLC playlist finishing does not, by itself, mean the YouTube stream will end. An OBS forum response discusses playlist playback without automatic stream termination, but that is community guidance rather than an official feature guarantee. If you depend on the broadcast remaining live after playback, test the behavior in your own setup.
Live edits to a VLC playlist are also worth testing before relying on them: a 2023 forum thread contains an anecdotal report that changes sometimes appeared during a broadcast and sometimes required restarting OBS and YouTube. The thread does not establish consistent supported behavior: OBS forum discussion of updating a live VLC playlist.

YouTube transport settings are a separate decision
Choosing Media Source or VLC Video is about local playback, not the protocol OBS uses to send the broadcast to YouTube. YouTube’s HLS setup guide lists OBS among encoders that support HLS and describes HLS as an ingestion option for HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP. It specifies 1–4 second segment duration, TS format, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency because it sends video segments rather than one continuous stream like RTMP. These are HLS transport requirements, not reasons to choose VLC Video over Media Source.
Check rights and channel rules before streaming
Being able to play a file in OBS does not give you the right to broadcast it. Make sure you have permission for the music, video, artwork and other material in your stream, and review YouTube’s applicable policies and channel requirements. The technical sources cited here do not establish special YouTube rules for 24/7 study streams, a duration limit, channel eligibility, or whether any particular files are cleared for broadcast.

Common problems and what to check
- VLC Video is not available: Install VLC, restart OBS if needed, and make sure VLC and OBS architectures match. OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- A single file stops at the end: Open Media Source properties and enable Loop; its documented default is off.
- The playlist ends instead of repeating: Check that Loop Playlist is enabled in the VLC Video source.
- Playlist order changes unexpectedly: Disable Shuffle Playlist if you want a fixed sequence.
- Playback stops or restarts after changing scenes: Review the VLC source’s Visibility Behaviour and choose how hidden playback should work.
- Video or audio will not play: Verify the file path and test the encoding in your setup. OBS’s list of supported media types is not a guarantee that every encoding will work on every system.
- Playlist edits do not show during a live broadcast: Test edits before depending on them. The available forum report is anecdotal and does not establish reliable live-update behavior.
- OBS drops frames or the broadcast disconnects: Check the computer’s streaming load and the stability and capacity of its internet connection. A playback loop will not repair a connection or restart a failed stream.
