How Long Does It Take to Upload Videos for a YouTube 24/7 Stream?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no fixed upload time: YouTube says an upload can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours. For a useful estimate, divide the video file size by the sustained upload speed available on the network, then allow extra time for connection changes and YouTube processing. A prerecorded video intended to loop and a continuous live feed sent by an encoder are different workflows, so the right estimate depends on which one you mean.

Estimate the file transfer time

For a prerecorded video, the upload is a normal file transfer to YouTube. Its approximate transfer time is:

File size in bits ÷ sustained upload speed in bits per second = seconds to transfer

To use the formula, convert gigabytes to bits by multiplying by about 8 billion, and convert megabits per second to bits per second by multiplying by 1 million. These are decimal approximations; the actual result varies with the file-size convention, network conditions, and YouTube’s handling of the upload.

Example file size Sustained upload speed Approximate transfer time
1 GB 10 Mbps About 13 minutes
10 GB 10 Mbps About 2 hours 13 minutes
10 GB 5 Mbps About 4 hours 27 minutes

These examples estimate the transfer alone; they are not YouTube completion-time promises. Use the upload speed you can sustain on the network that will actually send the file, not the download speed advertised for your internet plan.

Why the real time can differ

  • File size and format: Larger files contain more data to transfer. YouTube also identifies file type and format as factors that can affect upload and processing.
  • Actual upstream capacity and stability: The upload may slow or fluctuate if the connection cannot sustain its measured rate.
  • Network congestion: ISP traffic and busy periods can make a transfer slower than the speed you measured at another time.
  • Quality and frame rate: Higher-quality and higher-frame-rate files tend to take longer to transfer and process, often because they are larger.

YouTube’s help guidance describes the overall upload duration as anywhere from a few minutes to several hours; it does not give a typical time for a particular file size or connection. YouTube Help: Video stuck during upload

Separate upload time from processing time

The transfer finishing does not mean every playback quality is ready. YouTube makes a low-quality version available first, then may continue processing higher resolutions. If viewers need a particular quality, check that it is available before relying on the video for a scheduled use.

YouTube gives an example of up to four hours for high-resolution processing of a 60-minute 4K/30 fps video, and says a 4K/60 fps video takes longer. That is a processing example—not the time to upload the file and not a typical-time estimate. YouTube Help: Low video quality after upload

Prepare a long prerecorded video for upload

  1. Check the file size and measure the real upload rate. Run a speed test on the connection you will use, preferably when that connection is behaving normally. Use the sustained upload result in the estimate, then leave a margin for variation and processing.
  2. Check account eligibility and limits. YouTube requires account verification to upload videos longer than 15 minutes. Its stated maximum is 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less. Those are upload limits, not estimates of how long the upload will take. YouTube Help: Upload videos longer than 15 minutes
  3. Upload through YouTube Studio. On a computer, sign in to YouTube Studio, select Create and then Upload videos, choose the file, and complete the video details and visibility settings. YouTube’s computer upload guide describes the current flow and processing considerations. YouTube Help: Upload YouTube videos – Computer
  4. Wait for the needed quality to finish processing. A low-resolution playback option may appear first. Verify the resolution you intend viewers to use rather than treating the end of file transfer as the end of preparation.

If the upload is slow, stuck, or interrupted

  • Try a wired connection if Wi-Fi is the bottleneck. Ethernet may improve a weak or unstable local wireless connection, but it cannot raise the upload capacity supplied by your ISP. Trying a less congested time can also help if network traffic is the cause.
  • If an upload is interrupted, resume it promptly. YouTube says an interrupted upload can be resumed from where it stopped for up to 24 hours: return to the upload page and select the same file. YouTube Help: Video stuck during upload
  • If high-resolution playback is missing, allow for processing. YouTube can make lower quality available before higher resolutions are ready; check again later instead of assuming the file transfer failed. YouTube Help: Low video quality after upload
  • If the file is rejected or too long, check verification and the upload limit. Confirm the account is verified for videos longer than 15 minutes and that the file is within the 256 GB-or-12-hour limit, whichever is less. YouTube Help: Upload videos longer than 15 minutes

If you mean a true continuous live feed

An encoder-based live stream sends video continuously to YouTube Live; it is not the same as uploading a prerecorded file. In that case, the important network question is whether the connection can reliably sustain the stream’s bitrate, not how long a file takes to transfer.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists recommended H.264 bitrates of 5–14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6–17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Match the encoder settings to the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, and available upstream capacity, and test the upload bitrate before going live. YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingestion and transcodes live streams into outputs for viewers on different devices and networks. These recommendations apply to live encoding, not to ordinary prerecorded-file upload speeds. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
