A 24/7 YouTube livestream can contribute to the 4,000 public watch-hour requirement only if the stream is public and YouTube converts its replay to a video on demand (VOD). The threshold for the full YouTube Partner Program (YPP) ad-revenue path is 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the previous 12 months. Reaching it makes your channel eligible to apply; it does not guarantee approval.
Do live stream hours count toward YouTube monetization?
They can, provided the livestream remains public and its replay is converted to VOD. YouTube excludes livestreams that are unlisted, deleted, or not converted to VOD from the 4,000-hour path. A long broadcast or a high concurrent-viewer count is not, by itself, proof that you have earned qualifying hours. The counter measures eligible viewer watch time, not the stream’s runtime. A 24-hour broadcast does not automatically add 24 hours to your channel’s total; the amount depends on qualifying viewing, and the eligible total is subject to YouTube’s rules.
Which YouTube thresholds apply?
The 4,000-hour target belongs to the full YPP ad-revenue route, not every level of YPP access. YouTube also offers a separate expanded YPP tier in eligible regions; its lower thresholds do not mean a channel has reached the full ad-revenue threshold.

How to build a 24/7 stream that can contribute qualifying hours
- Choose a real viewing purpose. Plan programming people have a genuine reason to watch, such as a themed gaming broadcast or a useful continuous showcase. YouTube reviews the channel as a whole and expects original, authentic content; a schedule alone cannot establish eligibility.
- Set the live event to Public. If you intend the replay to contribute, do not set the stream to unlisted or private. YouTube lists unlisted livestreams among the exclusions.
- Run the broadcast and monitor it. Use the streaming setup that suits your production. YouTube’s live-stream guidance discusses encoder setup, but its watch-hour eligibility criteria do not require a particular encoder, device, or streaming service. Monitor the event in YouTube Studio rather than treating uptime or live viewer count as the eligible-hours figure.
- Confirm the replay is available as a public VOD. After ending or restarting the stream, check that YouTube has made the archive available and that it remains public. If it is not converted to VOD, YouTube says its livestream hours do not count toward the threshold.
- Keep qualifying archives intact. Do not delete or unlist a replay whose hours you need. YouTube excludes deleted and unlisted videos, and privacy changes or deletion can affect an application.
- Track the rolling total in YouTube Studio. Open the Earn area to monitor eligibility. The 12-month window moves forward, so older hours age out; a lifetime total or a calculation based on broadcast duration is not a substitute.
- Apply from Earn when eligible. Meeting the threshold lets you apply, after which YouTube reviews the channel against its policies and other YPP requirements.

- Livestream watch time when the event is unlisted or deleted, or when the stream is not converted to VOD.
- Watch time from ad campaigns.
- Shorts views or Shorts Feed watch time. Shorts have a separate eligibility route; their watch time does not fill the 4,000-hour long-form requirement.
Paid promotion should not be treated as a way to buy qualifying hours. YouTube distinguishes paid campaign watch time from eligible activity for YPP thresholds. See its guidance on choosing how to monetize.
Why 4,000 hours does not guarantee monetization
YouTube reviews each eligible channel as a whole. Reviewers may consider its main theme, most-viewed and newest videos, the videos responsible for the largest share of watch time, metadata, and the About section. YouTube says monetized content should be original and authentic, rather than mass-produced, generic, repetitive, or manipulative. A continuous schedule is not inherently an approval strategy: repetitive loops or material made solely to attract views can create policy risk. Make sure you have the rights to the game footage, music, and other material you use, and that the overall channel adds genuine value. YouTube’s policy guidance says borrowed content needs significant change to be eligible for monetization.

Common mistakes and fixes

After approval: live-stream revenue is separate
Once accepted to YPP and after accepting the applicable terms and modules, creators may enable Watch Page ads for live streams. YouTube also lists channel memberships and Super Chat or Super Stickers among live-stream revenue features. Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve, and these monetization features do not help establish eligibility watch hours.
YouTube reported that creators who chose automatic mid-roll ads on live streams saw an average uplift of over 20% in instream ad revenue per hour compared with channels that did not turn them on. YouTube says the comparison averaged across 207 countries and was measured in January 2024; it is a revenue finding for monetized channels, not a promise or a way to reach the watch-hour threshold.
