For a low-bandwidth YouTube Live stream, use AV1 or H.265/HEVC if your encoder and ingest workflow support either; otherwise, H.264 is supported. YouTube recommends 3 Mbps for AV1/HEVC or 4 Mbps for H.264 at 480p30, and 6 Mbps for AV1/HEVC or 8 Mbps for H.264 at 720p30. Those are YouTube’s recommended ingest rates, not a guarantee that a particular connection will hold a continuous stream. Test the setup under representative conditions and monitor stream health.

Choose a codec and starting bitrate

YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest. Its latency guidance says AV1 or HEVC can provide the best quality and stability at a given bitrate. That advantage matters only if your encoder and workflow can produce and send the codec reliably; H.264 remains a supported fallback. YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, gives the following minimum and recommended rates. The page does not show a publication year. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table and latency guidance.

Resolution and frame rate AV1 / H.265 minimum AV1 / H.265 recommended H.264 minimum H.264 recommended
360p30 0.3 Mbps 3 Mbps 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
480p30 0.3 Mbps 3 Mbps 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
720p30 2 Mbps 6 Mbps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p60 2 Mbps 6 Mbps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 4 Mbps 10 Mbps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 4 Mbps 12 Mbps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

For a constrained connection, 360p30 or 480p30 calls for a lower recommended rate than 720p30. Do not treat the minimum as the target: it is distinct from YouTube’s recommendation. Start with the recommended rate for the resolution and frame rate you intend to send, then test it against your connection’s sustained upload performance and the visual complexity of your content. YouTube does not publish a universal upload-headroom percentage.

Practical low-bandwidth choices

  • Use 480p30 when bandwidth is tight and lower detail is acceptable: 3 Mbps recommended for AV1/HEVC or 4 Mbps for H.264.
  • Try 720p30 if your sustained upload can support the higher recommended rate and the extra resolution helps viewers: 6 Mbps for AV1/HEVC or 8 Mbps for H.264.
  • Keep 30 fps when the content does not need smoother motion. YouTube’s table lists higher recommendations at 1080p60 than at 1080p30, while the 720p recommendations are the same for 30 and 60 fps.

Set the encoder for YouTube Live

Use YouTube’s published settings as the starting configuration, then confirm the exact options available in your encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS and specifies these encoder parameters:

  • SDR color: Rec. 709, 8-bit.

Use the YouTube stream key for the event or stream you are configuring, and keep it private. Enter it in the encoder’s YouTube destination or stream-key field; the label and location vary by software. A key routes the encoder’s output to your YouTube stream, so check that the selected stream in YouTube Studio is the intended one before going live.

Test the connection and the actual content

  1. Measure upload speed. Run a speed test on the same connection and device/network path you plan to use. A brief peak result does not establish that upload capacity will remain stable for a long broadcast.
  2. Choose a resolution and recommended bitrate. Use the table above, taking codec support and the sustained upload result into account. If the connection cannot sustain the chosen setting in a test, reduce the resolution or bitrate and test again.
  3. Configure representative audio and motion. Include the kinds of game movement, menus, camera pans, effects, and audio levels that will appear in the real stream. YouTube Help says tests should include audio and movement similar to the intended stream.
  4. Run a pre-stream test and watch stream health. Check YouTube Studio’s stream preview, status messages, and health indicators while the encoder sends video. Look for dropped frames, unstable ingest, or audio/video issues before relying on the setup.
  5. Repeat after material changes. Re-test if you change codec, resolution, bitrate, encoder, network connection, or content type; each can change the result.

What changes for a 24/7 stream?

YouTube’s reviewed encoder and stream-management pages do not specify a separate bitrate profile, uptime target, or reconnect guarantee for broadcasts running 24 hours or longer. The standard ingest recommendations above therefore should not be presented as a promise of uninterrupted operation. For a long-running channel, sustained network stability, monitoring, and a recovery plan matter in addition to the codec and bitrate. YouTube’s encoder guidance and stream-management settings do not establish separate 24/7 requirements.

Latency mode is another independent choice. YouTube says most viewers of low-latency streams experience less than 10 seconds of latency; for ultra-low latency, it says most viewers experience less than five seconds. These are descriptions of most viewers, not maximum-latency guarantees. YouTube also warns that ultra-low latency can increase buffering and makes network ingest problems affect viewers more. For a continuous stream without real-time interaction, the lowest-latency option may not be useful enough to justify that tradeoff. YouTube’s latency guidance.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a continuous YouTube channel rather than operating an encoder at home, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos and playlists from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream continues with your computer off. Each slot streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded video, not camera-based live capture. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.

Copyright and reused-content checks

A stable connection and suitable encoding do not establish that a stream is permitted or eligible for monetization. Before leaving a 24/7 stream running, make sure you have rights to the video, music, and other material in the loop, and review YouTube’s policies for live content and reused content. Repeating a video does not itself grant permission to use it, and technical continuity should not be confused with policy compliance.
