Choose how many hours of unique material you want before the playlist repeats, divide that runtime by the average video length, and round up. For example, a six-hour cycle made from videos averaging eight minutes needs 45 videos; a 24-hour cycle at the same average needs 180. Those are planning calculations, not platform recommendations.
Calculate the playlist size from its runtime
Decide first how long you want the playlist to run before its content starts over. Then use:
Video count = desired unique-playlist runtime ÷ average video duration
Keep the units consistent. If the target is six hours, convert it to 360 minutes. At an average of eight minutes per video, 360 ÷ 8 = 45. For a full 24-hour cycle, use 1,440 minutes: 1,440 ÷ 8 = 180. Round up whenever the calculation does not produce a whole number.

For videos with mixed durations
Do not rely on an average guessed from a few titles. Add the actual runtimes of the selected videos to find the playlist’s real cycle length. If you are choosing a count before assembling the playlist, calculate an average from the videos you expect to include, then check the total runtime once the list is built.
Choose a repeat interval that suits the channel
A shorter cycle takes fewer videos but brings familiar material around more often. A longer cycle requires more unique runtime. Whether near-duplicate clips count as a meaningful repeat is an editorial choice for the channel; reviewed YouTube guidance does not specify a minimum variety level or preferred repeat interval.

There is no universal count that suits every channel. A gaming channel might choose a cycle based on the length and variety of its gameplay, while a channel built around a smaller set of long-form recordings may accept a shorter rotation. Set the interval based on what viewers should encounter before they hear or see the same material again.
Playlist looping is not the same as a live broadcast
YouTube documents a control for repeating a playlist: “When watching YouTube, you can play a video or playlist on repeat by looping it.” The repeat control is available on computer, mobile, TV, and gaming console. YouTube Help: repeat videos or playlists

A playlist playing on repeat is different from a live broadcast. YouTube also documents encoder-based setup as one way to stream. If viewers need an actual live event, live chat, or live-stream controls, a creator must arrange a broadcast that sends the prerecorded material as a live feed; the playlist’s video count alone does not create that broadcast. Plan archives and DVR separately for a 24/7 stream
A long playlist cycle does not guarantee a complete replay or rewind of a continuous broadcast. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Do not count on one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast producing a complete archive or full rewind. YouTube’s operational checklist recommends monitoring audio and video, checking local archive files, confirming the event is accessible from channel and watch pages and on mobile devices, and leaving bandwidth headroom. Those operational checks address broadcast reliability; adding more videos to a playlist does not replace them. YouTube Help: live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
