For compatible clips, FFmpeg can join them into one file without re-encoding; you can then play that file through an encoder such as OBS and send it to YouTube Live. The key limitation: the clips need matching streams and parameters. If they do not, normalize and re-encode them first.
Choose the right way to combine your clips
| Method | Compatibility | Re-encodes? | Creates one local file? |
|---|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg concat demuxer with stream copy | Best when the clips have the same streams, codecs and time bases | No | Yes |
| Video editor or FFmpeg re-encode | Useful when clips need common output settings | Yes | Yes |
| Prerecorded-media encoder or cloud service | Depends on the hardware or service and its supported inputs | Not necessarily; check its instructions | No joined file required |
FFmpeg documents the concat demuxer’s same-stream requirement: all files must have the same streams, including codecs and time bases (FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation). YouTube’s encoder directory also lists hardware and cloud options for sending prerecorded media directly, without first creating a joined file (YouTube encoder options).
Join compatible files with FFmpeg
1. Check the clip order and media properties
Put the clips in the order you want them to play. For stream-copy joining, make sure they contain matching streams and parameters, including codecs and time bases. Unequal stream lengths can cause gaps when FFmpeg adjusts timestamps to place each file after the previous one. The result depends on the clips’ media properties, so do not assume files that share an .mp4 extension are compatible.
2. Create the concat list
In a plain-text file named list.txt, put the required header first, then one file entry per line:

ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i list.txt -c copy joined.mp4
The -c copy option copies the streams instead of re-encoding them. Use this method only when the files meet the same-stream requirement and work in the output container. Play the joined file and inspect the transitions: incorrect duration information can cause artifacts.
If the clips are incompatible
If the join fails or the output has problems, the clips may differ in codec, time base, resolution, frame rate or audio layout. Convert them to common output characteristics before joining, or arrange them in a video editor and export with a matching preset. Re-encoding takes additional processing time but can produce a consistent file from sources that cannot be stream-copied together. Check the actual files; the precise cause depends on their media properties.

Send the joined video to YouTube Live
Check channel readiness
YouTube’s getting-started guidance says a channel must be verified, must not have live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the user must be at least 16. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned broadcast (YouTube live-streaming eligibility and setup).
Connect an encoder and preview
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select a stream.
- Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key into your encoder. Keep the key private; anyone who has it may be able to send video to your stream.
- In the encoder, select
joined.mp4as the media source and start sending it. Playback controls differ by encoder; follow its current instructions for playing a file. - Wait for the preview, check that the video and audio are correct, and then click Go live when ready. YouTube lists OBS as open-source software for recording and live streaming (YouTube encoder options).
Test stream health and bandwidth
Before an event, test with representative motion and audio, monitor stream health, and leave upload-bandwidth headroom. YouTube recommends 20% headroom over the stream bitrate. YouTube’s live encoder settings are separate from its file-upload encoding recommendations: use the live guidance for the encoder’s codec, bitrate, frame rate and keyframe settings, not the upload recommendations (YouTube live encoder settings and streaming tips; YouTube video upload encoding recommendations). YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that is an archive behavior, not a guarantee that a stream will stay connected for the entire time (YouTube live streaming tips).

Keep the stream running without joining a local file
If your aim is to play prerecorded videos continuously, a direct prerecorded-media encoder or cloud service is an alternative to joining clips and keeping a local encoder running. StreamNeo is #1 for an always-on YouTube stream from the cloud: it plays uploaded video at the quality supplied, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot, and the first day is free.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for uploaded videos, not a camera broadcast. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps it running without a computer, OBS or home connection staying on. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Every slot includes 10 GB of storage per slot, pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and support from the StreamNeo team. The same features apply on every plan; only the billing length changes.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
There is no card required for the first free day (one free day per account). Monthly billing is $9.99 per month; shorter and longer billing options are also available. UPI and cards are accepted in India, and card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo for details, or start your free day.
Troubleshoot common problems
- FFmpeg reports a stream mismatch: check whether the clips have matching streams and parameters. Normalize and re-encode them to common characteristics, or export them together from an editor.
- The joined file has a gap or glitch at a transition: inspect the source clips’ stream lengths and duration information. Test the transitions in the output; inaccurate duration metadata can cause artifacts.
- The file joins but will not play in the encoder: confirm that the encoder supports the file and its streams, then consult that encoder’s current media-playback instructions. YouTube’s upload format recommendations are not a complete live-encoder specification.
- YouTube does not show a preview: check that the encoder is using the selected stream’s server URL and key, is sending data, and that the channel is eligible for live streaming. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- The stream health is poor: check the encoder’s live settings and network upload capacity. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth 20% above the stream bitrate; test under representative conditions and leave that headroom.
Copyright and reused content
Joining clips does not grant permission to broadcast them. Use footage, music and other material you own or are authorized to use, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules before streaming. A sequence of prerecorded clips also remains prerecorded material; combining files does not by itself make the content original or establish eligibility for monetization. Check YouTube’s current channel and monetization policies for your circumstances.
