Yes, potentially—but your connection must sustain the combined upload bitrate of both streams, with room for audio, network overhead and fluctuations. YouTube’s published bitrate recommendations put two 1080p30 H.264 streams at 28 Mbps of video alone. That is an encoder-target calculation, not a guarantee that a broadband plan advertised at 28 Mbps will handle them. Test the actual line and check your ISP’s upload and fair-use terms before relying on it.
Can YouTube run two live streams at once?
Yes. Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API documentation describes simultaneous broadcasts, including an example of an ongoing 24/7 feed alongside a separate interview broadcast. In that example, the interview is a subset of the ongoing feed and both broadcasts use one stream resource. That is a documented configuration, not proof that every pair of independent programs can use one stream key or identical setup.
YouTube distinguishes a broadcast—the viewable event or video on YouTube—from a stream, which carries the audio-video transmission settings. A broadcast is bound to exactly one stream; one stream may be bound to up to three live broadcasts. For simultaneous broadcasts with different settings, the API documentation describes creating a separate stream for each broadcast. Confirm the intended setup in YouTube Studio or the API before launch. Google for Developers: YouTube Live Streaming API (updated 14 September 2026).
How much upload speed do two streams need?
Add the target video bitrates of both encoders. Use the recommendation for each stream’s codec, resolution and frame rate; add audio and transport overhead, and allow practical headroom for variation. The figures below are YouTube’s recommended H.264 video encoder bitrates, not measured broadband speeds or a prescribed connection tier.

| Per-stream profile | Recommended H.264 video bitrate per stream | Two identical streams, video only |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 28 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 16 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 16 Mbps |
| 480p30 | 4 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
For streams using AV1 or H.265/HEVC, YouTube’s corresponding recommendations are 10 Mbps for 1080p30, 6 Mbps for 720p60 or 720p30, and 3 Mbps for 480p30. For example, a 1080p30 H.264 stream plus a 720p30 H.264 stream totals 22 Mbps of video bitrate before overhead. These recommendations are per-stream settings; they do not guarantee a particular Indian broadband plan will sustain the combined load. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Compare that total with sustained upload capacity, not download speed. A speed-test result is only a snapshot: upload can vary with time of day, congestion, Wi-Fi, packet loss and other traffic on the connection. There is no universal fixed headroom percentage established by YouTube or TRAI, so treat headroom as a prudent operating allowance, not an official threshold.

What to check on an Indian broadband plan
TRAI says it does not prescribe a minimum broadband upload or download speed. Providers must declare typical upload and download speeds for tariff offerings; TRAI says at least 90% of measured test samples must be at or above the declared typical speed. That is not a promise that an individual connection will maintain that speed every hour.
Also check the plan’s fair usage policy (FUP). TRAI explains that an unlimited plan may reduce speed after its stated usage threshold is reached, and that the provider must specify both the threshold and the speed supplied afterward. A plan labelled “unlimited” alone does not establish whether it can sustain two streams at their starting bitrate for a month. Check the exact plan terms and your provider’s declared typical upload speed. TRAI says subscribers can check connection speed with its MySpeed app or portal. Test and configure both feeds before going 24/7
- Set the target for each stream. Choose codec, resolution and frame rate, then use YouTube’s bitrate recommendation for each. Add both video bitrates before deciding whether the connection has capacity.
- Measure the real upload connection. Run an upload speed test at the location and during the hours the streams will operate. Repeat it at different times, and account for other devices and household traffic that share the connection. YouTube specifically recommends testing upload bitrate and choosing settings that work reliably on the connection.
- Configure each encoder and broadcast deliberately. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR) rate control and a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds). Supported video codecs in its guidance include H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1; supported audio codecs include AAC and MP3. Use the appropriate stream configuration for each broadcast rather than assuming one stream key can carry any two independent programs.
- Run a representative test. Test with the actual audio and on-screen movement, not a static image alone. Keep it running long enough to encounter likely congestion, bitrate dips and restarts; monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages while both feeds are active.
- Verify the ISP terms and operating setup. Confirm the upload speed the provider declares for your plan, its FUP threshold and post-threshold speed. Keep the encoders online, configure reconnect behavior and monitor the feeds; no home connection or individual broadcast is guaranteed to remain uninterrupted indefinitely.
Why a nominal speed tier may still fail
- Download speed is mistaken for upload. The streams consume outbound capacity, so a high advertised download figure does not answer the question.
- The plan’s upload is below the combined target. Two 1080p30 H.264 streams at YouTube’s recommendation need 28 Mbps of video bitrate before overhead; a lower combined target, such as 720p or 480p, reduces the load.
- Actual upload varies. A short test may look good while evening congestion or other traffic later pushes available upload below the encoders’ needs.
- FUP changes the connection mid-run. If usage crosses the plan’s threshold and the post-FUP speed is lower than the feeds’ combined requirement, the streams may lose stability.
- The stream arrangement is not configured for two independent broadcasts. YouTube’s documented shared-stream example is a particular subset-broadcast case; separate programs may require separate stream resources and encoder settings.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube feed from uploaded video, rather than a live camera or gameplay capture, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The service keeps the feed running from its cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It does not remove the need to configure the YouTube broadcasts correctly. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing: $9.99 per month. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
