To stream a long prerecorded video as a YouTube Live broadcast, play the file in streaming software such as OBS and encode it as a live signal. Set the live encoder’s codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe interval for YouTube’s ingest requirements; shrinking the source file first does not configure those settings. No setting can guarantee zero quality loss, but the right output settings and a reliable connection can minimize avoidable degradation and buffering.
“Compress” can mean two different things: making a file smaller before uploading it, or encoding video in real time for a live broadcast. The steps and settings below cover the live workflow first, then explain when offline compression is relevant.
Can you stream a prerecorded video as a YouTube Live broadcast?
Yes. Add the local video file to a scene as a media source in OBS or equivalent streaming software, then start the broadcast. The software plays the file and encodes its playback into the outgoing live signal. OBS documents media sources and an option to loop playback in its Media Sources guide.
This is not the same as uploading a video normally. For a live broadcast, the encoder sends a continuous stream to YouTube; for an ordinary upload, you prepare a file for YouTube to process. YouTube publishes separate live encoder recommendations and upload encoding recommendations.

Set the live output before compressing the source
Start with the properties of the source—resolution, frame rate, codec, audio layout and whether it is HDR or SDR—and choose the output you intend to send. Then set the live encoder to match that output and the protocol. A smaller source file does not automatically produce a lower-bitrate live stream: file size is determined by the file’s encoding and duration, while live ingest uses a steady bitrate configured in the encoder.
- Load the video. In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene and select the file. Enable looping only if you want playback to restart automatically when it reaches the end.
- Choose an ingest protocol and compatible codec. YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, up to 60 fps, and recommends RTMPS. For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265/HEVC over RTMP(S); AV1 is not supported for HDR. YouTube says HLS supports HDR or codecs unavailable over RTMP, but its segmented delivery has higher latency. See YouTube’s live streaming protocol guidance.
- Set rate control and keyframes. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than four seconds.
- Set resolution, frame rate and bitrate. Use the matching row in the table below as YouTube’s published ingest recommendation, not as a guarantee of visually lossless output.
- Configure audio and picture format. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS; 5.1 surround is supported only with AAC. Its recommendations include stereo at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz, or 5.1 at 384 kbps and 48 kHz. Use square pixels and progressive scan. For video, YouTube lists two B-frames, one reference frame and CABAC; use Rec. 709 for SDR, with 8-bit SDR or 10-bit HDR.
- Test and monitor. Check your upload speed, run a representative preflight with similar motion and audio, and monitor YouTube’s stream health during the broadcast. Your stable upload capacity needs headroom above the selected bitrate so normal variation does not interrupt delivery.
YouTube Live bitrate recommendations
The following are YouTube Help’s recommended RTMP/RTMPS ingest bitrates, checked October 3, 2026. The AV1/H.265 values are grouped together in YouTube’s guidance. Choose the row that matches the output codec, resolution and frame rate; these are platform recommendations, not an independent quality test.

| Output resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 4K/2160p, 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 4K/2160p, 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p, 30 fps | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
For example, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps with AV1 or H.265, and 14 Mbps with H.264. For 1080p at 60 fps, its recommendations are 12 Mbps and 17 Mbps respectively. Do not raise the bitrate just because the source file is large; choose based on the intended live output and available stable upload capacity.
What “without losing quality” can realistically mean
There is no universal setting that guarantees a live stream will look identical to its source. The result depends on source quality, motion and fine detail, encoder behavior, output resolution and bitrate, connection stability, and YouTube’s processing. YouTube automatically transcodes incoming live video into formats for viewers, so creator settings determine the ingest signal rather than a specific rendition every viewer receives.

- Keep the output resolution and frame rate appropriate to the source; increasing either cannot restore detail that is not present in the file.
- Choose a bitrate from YouTube’s recommendation for the selected codec and output, then verify the connection can sustain it with headroom.
- Test a representative section containing the most motion, fine detail and audio variation. A static opening is not a sufficient preflight for a fast-moving game video.
- Hardware encoding in OBS can move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component. That may help performance allocation, but it does not establish a universal quality advantage over other encoding options.
- Check YouTube’s stream health during the event and respond to warnings rather than assuming a successful local preview proves stable ingest.
Latency, HDR and 4K trade-offs
Choose latency according to how quickly viewers need to see the broadcast and how much buffering they can tolerate. YouTube explains that lower latency leaves less read-ahead buffer and can result in more buffering. HLS may be necessary for some HDR or codec combinations unavailable over RTMP, but its segmented delivery introduces higher latency. YouTube’s low-latency option is unavailable for 4K/2160p.
If the video is HDR, confirm the protocol and codec support it before building the setup around an RTMP/RTMPS preset. If the material is SDR, use the SDR recommendations rather than treating an HDR setting as a quality upgrade.

When to compress the file offline
If your goal is a smaller upload file or reduced storage use, use YouTube’s separate upload encoding recommendations and preserve the source’s intended resolution, frame rate and dynamic range. Re-encoding can reduce quality, especially when the original is already compressed; a smaller file is not automatically better for a live broadcast. For a live file-playback stream, offline compression is optional and does not replace configuring the outgoing live encoder.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting common live-encoding problems
- YouTube reports unstable or insufficient stream health: check the selected bitrate against a fresh upload-speed test, allow headroom, and repeat a representative preflight. Reduce the output bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain the target reliably.
- The broadcast looks softer than the file: confirm the output resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate; inspect a high-motion segment; and remember YouTube transcodes the incoming signal for viewers. A larger source file alone does not prevent live ingest or platform processing from affecting the result.
- Playback ends instead of repeating: verify that the OBS Media Source is configured to loop, if continuous replay is intended.
- HDR is unavailable or the colors look wrong: verify the source’s HDR/SDR status and choose a supported codec and protocol. YouTube recommends H.265/HEVC for HDR over RTMP(S), and does not support AV1 for HDR there.
- Viewers experience buffering despite a clear local preview: compare the chosen latency mode with the connection and buffering tolerance. Lower latency uses less read-ahead buffer, while HLS’s segmented delivery has higher latency.
- The encoder struggles under load: inspect CPU and GPU use and consider an available hardware encoder. Hardware encoding changes where work is performed; test the resulting stream rather than assuming it will improve quality.
Copyright and YouTube channel rules
Only stream video and audio you have the rights or permission to broadcast. A recording being prerecorded, or already uploaded elsewhere, does not establish permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube’s copyright and channel rules apply to live streams as well as ordinary uploads; check the platform’s current policies and any applicable licenses before scheduling a long broadcast. Do not assume that a long stream is exempt from copyright or reused-content review.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does compressing the video first reduce live-stream quality?
It can, if the offline re-encode discards detail. For file playback, offline compression is optional; configure the live encoder for the outgoing signal either way.
Can I use a different bitrate from YouTube’s recommendation?
Yes, but test the actual codec, output and connection. YouTube’s values are recommendations for RTMP/RTMPS ingest, not a guarantee of a particular viewer result.
