Why Does My Scheduled YouTube Livestream Start the Wrong Playlist?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First check what “playlist” means in your case: the scheduled YouTube broadcast, the encoder’s selected broadcast, or the media playlist playing inside the encoder. These are separate things. YouTube’s documented encoder workflow has you choose an upcoming event, send its feed to Live Control Room, inspect the preview, and then go live; it does not describe YouTube automatically choosing a YouTube playlist when a scheduled event starts. YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers that workflow.

Find where the wrong item appears

Check the screen showing the unexpected content before changing settings. “Wrong playlist” can describe three different problems:

  • Wrong scheduled broadcast: the encoder is connected to a different upcoming event than the one you intended.
  • Wrong video or scene in the stream: the correct event is open, but the encoder is sending the wrong media file, playlist, or scene.
  • Wrong YouTube playlist placement: the live video itself is correct, but it appears in the wrong YouTube playlist on its watch page or in Studio.

Compare the event shown in YouTube Studio with the broadcast selected in your encoder. Then check the Live Control Room preview. That separates an event-selection problem from an encoder-source problem or a YouTube video-playlist setting.

How to select and verify the intended scheduled event

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and go to Manage. Open the intended upcoming event. Confirm its title and scheduled time. YouTube’s labels can change, but its encoder guide describes selecting or creating a scheduled stream before connecting an encoder.
  2. In the encoder, select the broadcast that matches the event open in Studio. Check the title and time rather than relying on its position in a list.
  3. Connect the encoder with the stream URL and stream key associated with that event. YouTube describes stream keys as the credentials that let an encoder send a feed; they are not documented as a way to select a scheduled event. See Manage live stream settings.
  4. Wait for the intended video to appear in the Live Control Room preview. Check that it shows the correct game, scene, or media before starting the broadcast.
  5. When the preview is right, click Go live for the intended event if the workflow requires it. An encoder’s auto-start behavior may differ; community guidance for OBS notes that a scheduled broadcast may still need an explicit Go Live action when auto-start is disabled. See the OBS community guide.
  6. After starting, verify the event on the channel or its watch page. YouTube recommends checking the preview and confirming the event on channel and watch pages: Streaming tips.

If you reused an earlier stream

YouTube’s Reuse settings option copies the previous stream’s metadata, settings, and stream key into the new stream. Review the new event after using it: confirm its title, time, and settings, and make sure the encoder is pointed at that event. Reusing settings can carry forward details you did not intend, but YouTube does not say that it causes a wrong playlist or selects the wrong broadcast.

If the preview or watch page is still wrong

The Live Control Room preview shows the wrong content

The encoder is likely sending the wrong scene, media source, or local playlist. Correct the source in the encoder, then wait for the updated feed in the preview before going live. If you have multiple scenes or media playlists, check the one currently active rather than only the project’s saved settings.

The preview is correct, but the public video is in the wrong YouTube playlist

Inspect the YouTube video’s own details and playlist assignment. The stream key connects the encoder feed; changing it is not an evidence-backed fix for a video’s YouTube playlist placement.

The encoder appears to select a different scheduled broadcast

Recheck the event title and time in both places, then reselect the intended event in the encoder if needed. One OBS Forums user reported that choosing the third scheduled broadcast through OBS’s “Manage broadcast” feature started the first broadcast instead; the post is dated October 14, 2024, and the author later said selection worked after the twelfth and thirteenth attempts. This is one user’s anecdote, not an official diagnosis or evidence of a current, widespread bug: the OBS Forums report.

The encoder cannot connect

Use YouTube’s stream-key troubleshooting and verify that the encoder has the correct stream URL and key for the intended event. Resetting a key requires updating the encoder, so do not reset it just because the wrong broadcast was selected. Reset only when connection or security circumstances warrant it.
