Short answer: A spare PC gives you direct control and may be the practical choice if you already have suitable hardware, dependable internet and power, and are willing to monitor it. Cloud hosting moves the playback and streaming workload off your computer, but it brings provider terms and costs. Neither option is universally cheaper or more reliable. What changes when you choose a PC or cloud hosting?
With a spare or dedicated PC, the computer runs the playback and encoding software and sends the stream to YouTube. When a spare PC makes sense
Using a computer you already own can avoid adding a hosting subscription, but it is not cost-free: electricity, connectivity, maintenance and your time matter. You remain responsible for the machine staying on, the encoder staying active, and the network path reaching YouTube. A dedicated computer can keep the streaming workload separate from your everyday machine, though the available guidance does not establish particular hardware requirements.

- Choose local streaming if you want to control the software and configuration yourself and can maintain the computer and connection.
- Price electricity using the machine’s actual power use and your local tariff; do not assume a generic monthly figure applies.
- A mini PC for live streaming is one possible form factor, not a YouTube requirement. Select hardware based on the encoder and media you intend to run.
When cloud hosting makes sense
Cloud hosting is useful when you do not want a home computer to be the machine keeping the broadcast running. It does not make the stream independent of YouTube or the provider, and the provider’s current price, eligible plans, continuity limits and recovery behavior should be checked before relying on it.
OneStream Live documents a 24-hour YouTube streaming feature that requires its Enterprise plan. That is the provider’s stated plan condition; confirm current eligibility, pricing and limits with OneStream Live’s instructions. YouTube’s encoder guide also lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming; check the service’s current terms before choosing it.

How to run the local encoder route
- Enable YouTube live streaming in advance. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours; this is an initial setup delay, not a delay stated for every broadcast. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup flow.
- Choose and configure an encoder. Use streaming software on the computer or a hardware encoder. Set the YouTube stream URL and stream key in the encoder where required. Treat the stream key as a credential: use the correct key for the intended channel and avoid exposing it.
- Choose a format your connection can sustain. YouTube advises selecting quality that is reliable for your internet connection. For one specific example, its settings table recommends 4–10 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps and gives 12 Mbps as the maximum. These are YouTube’s platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular PC or connection can sustain the feed. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
- Use RTMPS where supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted connection to Google’s servers. The network path still matters whether the encoder is at home or hosted remotely.
- Test before the real broadcast. YouTube recommends a test using audio and movement similar to the intended stream. Check the video, sound and stream health rather than assuming a successful short setup means a continuous broadcast will remain healthy.
- Start the encoder and monitor the live stream. YouTube’s workflow involves starting the broadcast through the encoder; monitor stream health during the event and be ready to intervene if the machine, software or connection fails.
Plan the YouTube archive separately
YouTube says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” Do not rely on automatic archiving for one uninterrupted broadcast longer than 12 hours. Before launch, decide whether the channel needs a replay and how to preserve continuity—for example, whether the live session should be divided into shorter broadcasts. Cloud hosting does not change this YouTube archive guidance.
Compare the real costs and risks
There is no universal cost or reliability winner in the available evidence. For a local setup, account for existing hardware (or a purchase), electricity at your tariff, connectivity and maintenance. For hosted streaming, check the provider’s current plan price, required tier, storage or bandwidth charges if any, and the service’s stated recovery and continuity limits. Compare those against how much control you want and how often you can monitor the channel.

Likewise, do not treat “cloud” as proof of uninterrupted service, or a spare PC as proof of failure. The outcome depends on the specific computer, software, power and connection or, for hosted streaming, the service and its terms.
