Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If audio starts in sync but gradually falls behind or moves ahead of the picture, first determine whether the mismatch is already present in your encoder or local recording, or appears only in YouTube playback. Then check OBS and active audio-device sample rates, review YouTube Live Control Room health and encoder messages, and retest long enough to compare the beginning with a later section. A fixed offset needs a different diagnosis from drift that grows over time.
First identify whether it is fixed offset or accumulating drift
Compare a recognizable sound and its matching visual near the beginning of the stream with the same kind of event later. For an ambient stream, use a clear cue such as a musical beat, a visible instrument strike, or another repeatable sound-and-picture event.
- About the same mismatch throughout: treat this as a fixed offset. Look for a source delay or sync-offset setting in the production chain rather than assuming the stream is drifting over time.
- The mismatch grows as the stream runs: investigate clock and sample-rate consistency, changes in the source, and the encoder or playback path.
There is no universal drift threshold established here; the early-versus-late comparison is a diagnostic method, not a YouTube-prescribed cutoff.
Trace where the audio and video separate
Compare the program at successive points instead of changing settings at random. YouTube’s live troubleshooting guidance calls for checking the sources routed to the encoder, encoder condition and CPU load, a local archive when available, and the outbound internet connection.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Inspect the encoder output. If audio and video are already out of sync in the encoder’s preview or output, focus first on the source and production setup.
- Check a local recording, if your setup makes one. Compare an early and later section. A local archive that develops the same growing mismatch points toward a problem before or during encoding rather than something unique to YouTube playback.
- Compare with the YouTube stream. If the encoder and local recording remain in sync but YouTube playback does not, review Live Control Room health and messages, the connection, and the playback conditions before changing source timing.
This comparison narrows the likely part of the chain; it does not by itself prove a single cause.
Check sample rates in OBS and every active audio device
In an OBS workflow, compare the audio sample rate selected in OBS with the formats used by every audio device that is active in the stream. Pay particular attention if the setup combines multiple devices or sources.

- Open OBS audio settings and note the selected sample rate.
- Check the configured format for each active input and output device in the operating system or device control panel.
- Where the setup allows it, make the active device formats consistent with the OBS setting, then test again and compare early and later sync.
An OBS community support discussion identifies mismatched device sample rates as one possible cause of drift over time or distortion. That makes consistency a sensible test, not a guaranteed explanation or universal fix.
Verify live encoder audio settings and stream health
YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends an audio sample rate of 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1 surround sound. Its recommended audio bitrates are 128 kbps for stereo and 384 kbps for 5.1 surround sound. These are encoder recommendations, not a demonstrated cure for accumulating sync drift. YouTube’s error guidance also flags incorrect sample rates and channel counts.

- Confirm the encoder is using the intended audio channel configuration and sample rate.
- Watch YouTube Live Control Room stream health and read any encoder messages during the stream.
- Check that the expected audio and video sources are actually routed to the encoder.
- Review encoder condition, CPU load, the local archive if available, and the outbound connection.
YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health and audio/video quality while live. For an accumulating-sync problem, make the test long enough to compare an early and a later point; YouTube’s guidance does not prescribe a fixed test duration.
Do not treat YouTube latency as a drift repair
YouTube defines stream latency as the time between capture and viewer playback. Lower-latency settings can increase buffering; normal latency is described as suitable for non-interactive streams. An ambient stream is usually non-interactive, so normal latency may be an appropriate buffering tradeoff, but changing latency is not a documented fix for audio/video drift that accumulates during a stream.

Retest one change at a time
- Record the current OBS and device sample-rate settings, encoder configuration, and the point at which the mismatch becomes noticeable.
- Make one relevant change, such as aligning active device formats, rather than changing sample rate, latency, and source timing together.
- Test under the same source and encoder conditions, checking sync near the beginning and later in the run.
- Compare encoder output, any local recording, and YouTube playback again. If the mismatch moves or remains, use that comparison to choose the next part of the chain to inspect.
Common symptoms and what to check
| What you observe | What to investigate |
|---|---|
| The same audio/video offset is present near the start and later. | A fixed source delay or sync offset; this is not the same symptom as drift that grows over time. |
| The mismatch grows in the encoder output or local recording. | Source changes, OBS and active-device sample-rate consistency, encoder condition, and CPU load. |
| Encoder output and local recording look synchronized, but YouTube playback does not. | Live Control Room stream health and messages, the outbound connection, and the playback path. |
| Audio is distorted as well as drifting. | Check device formats and encoder sample-rate and channel-count messages; a community OBS discussion treats mismatched rates as a possible contributor, not a certain diagnosis. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your ambient stream uses uploaded videos rather than a live camera, StreamNeo can keep a YouTube channel live from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not correct sync problems already present in a video file, so check the recording’s sync before using it.
