Sometimes, but not reliably or automatically. A free VPS can avoid extra compute charges only while the VM, storage, outbound data and any other billable resources stay within the provider’s free allowance. For a 24/7 video stream, outbound data is the catch: even a low-bitrate stream can send close to a terabyte in a month. Google Cloud’s documented free allowance is just 1 GB per month of outbound transfer, so it cannot carry a typical continuous stream within that allowance.
Why a “free VPS” can still cost money
A free VM is not the same as unlimited free hosting. A provider may include compute time and some disk space while charging for network egress or other resources beyond the allowance. Promotional trial credits are also different from a recurring free tier: they can run out, and access may stop if the account is not upgraded.
Before launching a stream, check the provider’s current free-tier terms and your account’s billing console. Confirm the limits for the exact region and instance, including outbound transfer, storage, eligible hours, overage billing and any conditions that can stop or reclaim the VM.
How much bandwidth does a 24/7 YouTube stream use?
YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations include 3 Mbps for 480p at 30 fps, 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. At a constant bitrate, sending continuously for 30 days works out to roughly:

These are calculations from bitrate multiplied by time, using decimal terabytes. They are not provider quotas; protocol overhead and bitrate variation can push actual transfer higher. Even the 480p example is far above Google Cloud’s published free outbound allowance of 1 GB per month.

Oracle’s US$300 promotional credit is a separate trial offer, not a permanent monthly allowance. Oracle says Always Free resources continue after the trial period subject to their limits, and permits one Free Trial or Always Free account per person. Will a free cloud VM stay online all the time?
Neither the presence of a free allowance nor a VM’s ability to start establishes that it will provide uninterrupted 24/7 service. Capacity, account and regional eligibility, resource limits and provider policies matter. Oracle explicitly warns: “Idle Always Free compute instances may be reclaimed by Oracle.” Its documented utilization thresholds mean that an instance can be at risk even when it is technically running.

There is another uncertainty: the provider limits cited here do not prove that a particular VM can encode your chosen resolution and frame rate in real time. CPU architecture, available capacity, encoder compatibility and the complexity of the video all affect whether encoding can keep up. No independent benchmark establishes performance or uptime for a specific free instance and stream setup.
Configure the YouTube stream and test it
YouTube documents RTMP and RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS. Its guidance calls for constant-bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). The supported codecs listed include H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. Use the settings appropriate to your encoder and verify that it supports the codec on your VPS; these ingest recommendations do not guarantee that the VM has enough capacity.

- Check the available ingest settings. In YouTube Studio, open the live-stream setup and use the server URL and stream key shown for your stream. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it, put it in a public script or share it. Use RTMPS if the encoder and ingest endpoint support it.
- Set encoding to match your intended stream. Choose a YouTube-supported codec and a resolution and frame rate your VM can encode in real time. Set a constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include 3 Mbps at 480p30, 8 Mbps at 720p30 and 14 Mbps at 1080p30; these are ingest recommendations, not evidence that a particular VM can sustain them.
- Test representative content before relying on it. YouTube recommends a speed test and a test stream using representative audio and movement. Check the resulting stream health and messages while it runs, and confirm the stream reaches YouTube at the expected quality.
- Check both billing and operations during the test. Watch outbound-data usage, compute and storage in the provider console, along with encoder performance and stream health. A successful short test does not establish a full month of free transfer or continuous availability.

If continuous availability matters, compare a paid VPS with a hosted cloud-streaming service rather than treating an always-free VM as a guarantee. No single apples-to-apples cost comparison is established by the provider information here, so check the actual terms for your account and workflow.

- Total recurring cost: include the cost after trial credits end, not just the initial credit.
- Outbound data: confirm the included monthly transfer, overage rates and how the provider counts traffic to YouTube.
- Encoding capacity: check CPU architecture, real-time encoding support and whether the instance can handle your chosen video settings.
- Availability and recovery: consider capacity in your region, reclamation or interruption policies, and the restart and monitoring controls you would need to maintain the stream.
- Workflow fit: check whether the service supports your particular setup, such as an encoder you manage yourself or cloud playback of prerecorded video.
