Build a seven-day programming grid, then configure a playback system to follow it. The grid is your plan; it is not a YouTube scheduled stream. A continuous broadcast can carry repeating playlists or timed dayparts, while scheduled streams create upcoming event pages and reminders. For a 24/7 channel, also plan rights checks, encoder or cloud playback, network resilience, and a separate recording archive.
Start with a video inventory, not the calendar
Keep a separate inventory so you can rearrange the schedule without losing each asset’s details. Make one row per video and record:
- Title and file name
- Runtime and theme
- Audience suitability
- Rights evidence, including territory, term, and permission for live-stream use
- Last-played date
- Any required opening slate, transition, or end card
Exclude material whose rights or usage terms are unclear until you resolve them. YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to have necessary rights for live content, including applicable music licensing rights. A video being available on YouTube does not itself grant permission to rebroadcast it.
Choose a rotation pattern viewers can recognize
Use a small number of recurring labels—such as “how-to morning,” “archive afternoon,” or “community picks”—and assign them to familiar days or times. A clear cadence helps viewers know what to expect, but the right repeat interval depends on the size and variety of your cleared library. YouTube’s guidance recommends a sustainable schedule, recurring formats or day associations, and communicating changes; it does not specify an ideal rotation length or promise audience growth from a particular cadence. Choose how the rotation advances

OBS documents playlist playback through its VLC Video source. Loop Playlist restarts the playlist after it ends, and Shuffle Playlist is off by default, making an ordered repeat possible. The OBS Media Sources guide documents playlist playback, not a complete seven-day calendar scheduler. For timed dayparts, use an appropriate automation rule or a documented operator handoff rather than assuming OBS switches blocks by itself.
Draft the seven-day grid
Use UTC or state the audience time zone explicitly. Include start times, the order of videos, estimated block lengths, transitions, rights status, and an operator or automation note. Add maintenance and contingency time instead of treating every minute as guaranteed content.

This is an illustrative template, not a YouTube requirement. Calculate each block by adding the video runtimes and transition time. Decide what happens when the final item ends: loop the whole playlist, advance to another block, or show a holding slate. Do not label a playlist “24 hours” unless you have added up its contents.
Configure playback and connect to YouTube
Prepare the media playback
- In OBS, add a Media Source for a single local file that should repeat, or add a VLC Video source for a playlist of several files.
- For an ordered playlist, enable Loop Playlist and leave Shuffle Playlist off. Confirm the controls in the OBS version you install; OBS’s guide was dated January 11, 2022.
- Build and verify separate playlists for each daypart if the grid changes during the week. Write down the switch time and the operator or automation responsible for it.
- Preview the transitions and check that each file has usable video and audio before putting the playlist on air.
Set up the YouTube stream
YouTube’s encoder workflow provides a server URL and stream key. Enter them in the encoder’s stream settings; the key directs the encoder feed, so keep it private. Follow the current YouTube encoder setup steps and confirm the channel’s eligibility before planning a launch. Current YouTube Help guidance says a channel needs verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days; first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours.

Decide whether to use one continuous event or scheduled events
The weekly grid is independent of how you represent the broadcast in YouTube. One continuous event can carry a repeating or dayparted playlist. Separate scheduled events can give viewers upcoming stream pages and reminders. In YouTube Studio, the Live Control Room’s Manage tab is where creators schedule a stream and reuse settings; see Manage live stream settings.

Preflight the stream and protect the archive
Check the feed before viewers arrive
- Begin encoder setup at least two hours before the planned event, as YouTube recommends.
- Start the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event.
- Check the Live Control Room preview, verify that the watch page is accessible, and confirm the expected playlist, picture, and audio.
- Monitor audio and video continuously while live; the setup steps reduce avoidable mistakes but do not guarantee against network or service failures.

Allow upload bandwidth headroom
YouTube says total streaming bitrate should not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% headroom above the stream bitrate. Include the combined bitrate of a backup encoder in the calculation. Its streaming tips explain the bandwidth guidance.

Record separately if a complete archive matters
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not rely on a single 24/7 event to produce a complete YouTube VOD. YouTube recommends a local archive as backup; size storage for your bitrate, resolution, recording duration, and retention plan, and check that the recording file is growing. Troubleshoot common schedule failures
- The same small set of videos repeats too often: Expand the cleared library, lengthen the rotation, or vary dayparts. Track last-played dates in the inventory.
- A playlist ends and the stream goes idle: Confirm that looping is enabled or define the next block or holding slate. Test the end-of-playlist handoff before going live.
- A daypart does not change on time: Verify the time zone in the grid and the responsible automation rule or operator handoff. The documented OBS playlist feature alone is not a weekly scheduler.
- The stream drops or becomes unstable: Check available upload bandwidth against total encoder bitrate, including a backup encoder, and preserve the recommended 20% headroom.
- No complete YouTube archive appears: A stream over 12 hours may not be captured. Use a local recording when continuity matters and verify storage capacity and file growth.
- A video cannot safely be rebroadcast: Remove it until you can verify permission for live use, including music rights and applicable territory and term.
- The channel cannot start a live stream: Check verification and live-stream restrictions, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time enablement.
