The cost of keeping a 24/7 YouTube stream online depends on what “cloud service” actually does. A cloud virtual machine (VM) that encodes a loop can incur continuous compute, storage and applicable data-transfer charges. A managed live-encoding service may bill by active channel hours; a platform that also distributes video to viewers has a different—and potentially much larger—cost model. YouTube handles transcoding and playback delivery for YouTube Live, so a cloud-to-YouTube feed should not automatically be priced as though the cloud provider serves every viewer.
First map the stream’s path
Before estimating a monthly bill, trace where the video is encoded and which services carry it. “Cloud streaming” can describe several architectures with different meters:
- Cloud VM to YouTube: A VM runs encoder software and sends one live feed to YouTube. Expect to account for VM uptime, any attached disk, and data transfer that applies to this path.
- Managed live encoding: A provider ingests and encodes the source, then sends the output to YouTube. The provider may charge for active channel hours, with rates dependent on input and output settings.
- Full video pipeline and viewer distribution: A service ingests, packages and serves playback to viewers. This includes distribution costs that do not necessarily apply to a VM sending a feed into YouTube.
- Cloud relay or multistream service: A service receives one high-quality feed and relays it to destinations. YouTube’s guidance notes that cloud-service encoders often involve subscriptions, with some free plans and paid feature tiers.
The bill depends on the actual delivery path, not the word “cloud.” Count viewer-delivery charges only when the architecture really sends viewer playback through the provider.
The main cost layers
Compute and continuous uptime
A VM left on for a continuous stream keeps accruing compute charges for its running time. Google Cloud’s price table lists an f1-micro default on-demand rate of $0.0076 per hour in the table accessed on 2026-10-03. That is one specific machine and pricing row, not a universal price for hosting a live stream. A workload may need different CPU, memory, network performance, region or machine type. Check the current rate for the configuration and location you would actually use before calculating a monthly total.

Managed encoding by active channel time
Google Cloud says its Live Stream API is billed on demand based on active channel hours, with rates varying by input and output resolution. That is a separate cost shape from simply leaving a VM running. For an estimate, identify the channel’s expected active hours and the input and output resolutions, then use the provider’s current pricing for those choices.
Storage and archives
Storage can enter the bill through VM disks, retained source files, recordings or backups. Work out how much content must remain stored and for how long; do not treat a continuous stream as though its archive is included automatically.

YouTube says it can automatically archive a live stream shorter than 12 hours, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a complete recording matters, plan a local or independent archive, along with its storage and monitoring costs. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
Data transfer and viewer delivery
A cloud service may charge for network traffic, but the relevant question is which traffic traverses that provider. YouTube says it automatically transcodes a live input into output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. For a feed sent to YouTube, do not assume the cloud VM also pays per-viewer delivery charges for YouTube playback. Conversely, if a selected service packages or distributes playback itself, include the traffic and distribution charges applicable to that architecture. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance describes its viewer transcoding.

Why a full distribution example is not a YouTube hosting quote
AWS documents an example costing $69.74 per hour for a one-hour live event with 1,000 viewers using the architecture and assumptions on its page. CloudFront distribution accounts for $67.24 per hour of that example; the remainder includes MediaLive and MediaPackage. This illustrates how viewer delivery can dominate a full managed distribution stack. It is not a general market benchmark, nor an estimate for a cloud VM that sends one feed to YouTube, where YouTube handles viewer playback distribution. The figure reflects AWS’s documented example as accessed on 2026-10-03; use the page’s assumptions rather than applying it to a different design.
Build an estimate for your own setup
- Describe the source: Is a cloud VM encoding a prerecorded loop, a physical encoder sending a feed, or a managed live-encoding service doing the work?
- Draw the destinations: Does the service send one feed to YouTube, or also package and serve playback to viewers? Count active channels, output resolutions and destinations.
- Choose the real configuration: Note the VM type, region, disk and network needs, or the managed service’s input and output settings. Avoid pricing a small example VM if the workload needs more resources.
- Calculate operating time: Estimate monthly compute hours or active channel hours from the hours the stream will actually run.
- Add storage: Include attached disks and any retained recordings or backups, based on capacity and retention period.
- Price applicable traffic: Include transfer or distribution only where the selected provider carries that traffic. Do not add YouTube viewer playback delivery to a cloud-to-YouTube feed without a reason in the architecture.
- Add service and resilience costs: Include subscriptions, add-ons, monitoring, failover and archive backup if your availability requirements call for them.
- Recheck current pricing: Apply provider prices for the actual region and configuration. Prices vary, and the cited examples do not establish one cheapest setup or a universal monthly total.
For comparisons, record monthly cost at expected operating hours, output resolution and number of outputs, destinations, included storage and bandwidth, redundancy or recovery, archive capability, and who monitors or restarts the stream. Compare like with like: a VM that sends one feed to YouTube is not equivalent to a full ingest-and-distribution pipeline.

- Do you need an archive? YouTube’s automatic archive is not a dependable complete-recording plan for streams exceeding 12 hours. Arrange independent recording and retention if the full stream must be preserved.
