Restreamer vs OBS for Looping Videos on YouTube Live

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For looping a local video file on YouTube Live, OBS is the more directly documented choice: add the file as a Media Source in an OBS scene and enable Loop. Datarhei Restreamer documents a different workflow—publishing a source to YouTube with a YouTube streaming ID—but the cited guide does not specify a looping control. Restream, a separate product, offers scheduled prerecorded events with a documented loop limit on specified plans. Choose according to whether you want local scene control or a managed publishing and scheduling workflow.

First, distinguish a YouTube Live stream from a looping YouTube player

A YouTube Live broadcast receives a continuous feed from an encoder or streaming service. That is different from a viewer enabling a loop on a YouTube video player: the player setting does not rebroadcast your file as a live stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains how to create a live stream with an encoder: YouTube encoder setup.

How the three options differ

Option Documented workflow Looping and practical fit
StreamNeo Upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and start the stream. Cloud-based 24/7 looping for YouTube; best suited to leaving an uploaded video or playlist running without keeping your computer on. Any quality up to 4K 60fps as uploaded, at one flat price per slot; the first day is free.
OBS Studio Add a local Media Source to an OBS scene and connect OBS to YouTube as the encoder. The Media Source has a Loop property that repeats the file after playback completes. Best suited to creators who want control of local scenes and sources.
datarhei Restreamer Select Publication Service, enter a valid YouTube streaming ID, save, and start the stream. The cited YouTube guide documents publication, but does not specify a looping control. Verify the workflow and any loop options in the version you use rather than assuming it repeats the source.
Restream Upload or select recorded video, schedule a prerecorded event, and let the managed service air it. Restream’s event guide states a loop limit of up to 10 plays and a maximum resulting stream duration of 40 hours. The page lists looping for Marathon and Media add-on plans; limits and plan availability may change, so check current terms.

Restreamer and Restream are different products. Restreamer refers here to datarhei’s software; Restream is the separate managed service. Restream also documents looping a video in Studio, which is scene playback and not the same as looping a local OBS Media Source (Restream Studio video guide).

Loop a local video file with OBS

Prepare your YouTube live stream

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and obtain its stream key using YouTube’s encoder setup guidance: YouTube encoder setup. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
  2. Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for video and audio settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds), and provides supported codecs, frame rates, and other guidance in its encoder settings. Choose settings compatible with your source and connection; do not treat third-party bitrate presets as universal requirements.

Add the video and enable Loop

  1. Open OBS and select the scene where the video should appear. In Sources, select + and choose Media Source.
  2. Create a new source or select an existing one. Browse to the video file. OBS documents common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM; playback can still depend on the file’s encoding and your system.
  3. In the Media Source properties, enable Loop. OBS says the setting controls whether the file plays again when playback completes; it is off by default. Confirm the source is visible and sized correctly in the scene. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.
  4. In OBS, configure the stream service and enter the YouTube stream key. Start the stream from OBS, then check YouTube Studio’s live control room for incoming video and stream health before sharing the broadcast.
  5. Monitor the stream and confirm the file restarts as expected. YouTube advises testing and monitoring stream health; if you need to stop, end the broadcast in YouTube Studio as well as stopping the encoder.

OBS’s VLC Video source is a distinct option that requires VLC and has a Loop Playlist setting. It may suit a playlist workflow, but for a single local file the Media Source Loop property is the direct documented control.

Use datarhei Restreamer to publish a source to YouTube

  1. Set up the source you want to send in Restreamer and open its Publication Service.
  2. Enter a valid YouTube streaming ID, save the publication settings, and start the stream. Follow the Restreamer YouTube guide alongside YouTube’s encoder setup.
  3. Check the live control room on YouTube to verify that the feed arrives and the stream is healthy. The cited Restreamer guide warns that interrupting from Restreamer before ending the stream on YouTube may affect whether the broadcast is saved to YouTube’s DVR archive.

The cited guide establishes how to publish a source to YouTube, not whether a particular source repeats indefinitely. If looping is essential, verify that your installed Restreamer version and selected source workflow provide the repeat behavior you need before relying on it for a long broadcast.

When Restream’s scheduled prerecorded events fit

Restream documents a managed workflow for scheduled prerecorded events: select or upload a recording, schedule the event, and have it air automatically at the scheduled time. Its current help page, reviewed October 3, 2026, states that videos can loop up to 10 times, with a maximum resulting stream duration of 40 hours, and lists looping for Marathon and Media add-on plans. The page also gives plan-specific video-library and resolution limits; check its current details before choosing a plan: Restream prerecorded event guide. Restream’s Upload & Stream overview also describes scheduling recorded videos as live streams and looping them up to 10 times. This is a bounded event workflow, not evidence of indefinite looping.

Choose by workflow, not by name alone

  • Choose OBS if the file is local, you want its documented Media Source loop control, and you want to manage scenes and the encoder on your own computer.
  • Choose datarhei Restreamer if you want its source-publication workflow to YouTube. Confirm repeat behavior separately if the source must loop.
  • Choose Restream if a managed, scheduled prerecorded event suits your needs and its current plan limits, loop count, duration, library, and resolution work for the event.
  • Choose StreamNeo if you want an uploaded video or playlist to run continuously on YouTube from the cloud, without leaving a computer on; it supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with the first day free.

For OBS-to-Restream connections, Restream documents account connection or an RTMP stream key and gives settings specific to that connection; do not mistake those recommendations for universal OBS or YouTube requirements. See Restream’s OBS connection guide and its streaming software encoder guide.

Copyright, reused content, and stream checks

Having permission to stream a video and meeting YouTube’s monetization rules are separate questions. Before broadcasting, confirm that you have the rights to the video, music, and other included material for live use. A technically successful loop does not establish permission or monetization eligibility. Also consider whether a repetitive or reused broadcast meets the rules applicable to your channel; review YouTube’s current policies before scheduling a long-running stream.

Troubleshooting common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The file plays once and stops OBS Media Source Loop is off, its documented default. Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop. If using a different product or source type, verify that its workflow supports repeating playback.
YouTube does not receive video The encoder is not connected, the stream key or service setup is incorrect, or the publication has not been started. Recheck YouTube’s encoder setup, key, and incoming stream status; for Restreamer, confirm Publication Service settings were saved and started.
The stream arrives but reports health problems Encoder settings, connection stability, or source playback may not suit the stream. Compare settings with YouTube’s current encoder guidance, including its keyframe recommendation, and watch Studio’s stream health rather than relying on a preset from another workflow.
A scheduled Restream event will not loop as expected Looping may depend on plan eligibility or the event’s configured loop count and duration. Check the current event guide and plan details; the reviewed guide lists looping for Marathon and Media add-on plans and a maximum of 10 plays.
The YouTube archive is missing or incomplete after using Restreamer The broadcast may have been interrupted from Restreamer before it was ended on YouTube. Follow the Restreamer guide’s sequence and end the stream in YouTube before interrupting publication when archive saving matters.
