How to Use a YouTube Playlist as a 24/7 Livestream Source

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A YouTube playlist’s Loop control repeats videos for someone watching the playlist; it does not broadcast them as a livestream. To send a continuous feed to your channel, play videos you have the rights to use through an encoder such as OBS Studio and send that encoder’s output to YouTube Live. Your computer, OBS, media files, and internet connection must remain available for a local stream. A cloud service is an alternative if you do not want your computer to run the broadcast.

What a playlist can—and cannot—do

The Loop button on a YouTube watch page affects playback for the viewer. It does not create a live event or transmit the playlist to your channel. A livestream is a separate feed: an encoder plays the media, then sends video and audio to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key configured for that broadcast.

For a local setup, OBS Studio’s VLC Video Source can play a list of video and audio files and loop them. This is not the same as rebroadcasting a YouTube playlist directly: use media files you are authorized to stream, and configure the encoder output in YouTube Studio.

Set up a looping playlist in OBS

  1. Install OBS Studio and VLC. The VLC Video Source is available on Windows, macOS, and Linux. VLC must be installed for the source to appear in OBS. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.
  2. Create a scene and add the playlist source. In OBS, add a VLC Video Source and add the media files you have permission to broadcast. The source supports video and audio items.
  3. Choose how the playlist behaves. Turn on Loop Playlist to restart playback after the files finish. OBS documentation lists looping as on by default and shuffle as off by default, but check the actual source settings. Choose ordered playback or shuffle deliberately.
  4. Build and check the scene. Add any titles, graphics, or audio controls you need, then check that the intended media and sound play locally. Make sure the source is visible and sized correctly in the scene.
  5. Create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. Copy its stream URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your stream. See YouTube’s encoder setup help and stream settings help.
  6. Preview, start, and verify. Check the Live Control Room preview, start streaming from OBS, and confirm the intended watch page works. YouTube recommends setting up an encoder in advance for scheduled events and checking the stream on the channel or watch page, including on mobile. Monitor audio and video quality while it runs; see YouTube’s live streaming tips.
  7. Keep the local setup running. For as long as this method is broadcasting, keep the computer, OBS, media files, and internet connection available. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance does not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation.

Choose between a local encoder and a cloud service

OBS keeps playback and encoding on your computer. A cloud service instead runs the broadcast through the provider’s infrastructure, according to its service description. The practical trade-offs are where the stream runs, what you need to keep available, and the provider’s current features, price, supported platforms, and terms.

Cloud streaming service Provider’s cloud infrastructure, according to vendor descriptions The configured cloud service and stream Gyre describes playlist-based continuous streaming Can reduce the local operating burden; check current service features, costs, platform support, storage, stream limits, and terms

Gyre describes a cloud service for continuous prerecorded-video streams and is listed in YouTube’s encoder documentation as a tool for 24/7 livestreaming of prerecorded video. That is a vendor description, not an independent reliability assessment. No uninterrupted-stream guarantee or cost comparison is established here. A mini PC is one possible way to keep a local OBS setup available, not a requirement; YouTube says creators do not need expensive equipment to get started.

Protect the stream from rights and policy problems

Use media you are allowed to broadcast

YouTube’s live-stream terms require creators to hold the necessary rights for live content, including applicable music licensing rights. That applies to videos, music, images, and other material in your playlist. A video being available on YouTube does not itself establish that you may rebroadcast it.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, including copyrighted material from another live broadcast. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, warn you, interrupt the stream temporarily, or terminate it if the material remains. A license may not prevent an interruption if the rights holder has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Playlists remain subject to Community Guidelines

YouTube applies its Community Guidelines to playlists. It says a playlist may violate the guidelines if its videos, considered together as though combined into one video, would violate them. See YouTube’s Playlists policy.

Do not assume repeated videos will be monetized

Live streams are subject to YouTube monetization policies. Channel-level reused-content rules can exclude material repurposed from YouTube or elsewhere without significant original commentary, substantive modification, or educational or entertainment value. On July 15, 2025, YouTube renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” and clarified that repetitive or mass-produced content is ineligible for monetization. Copyright clearance and monetization eligibility are separate questions. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

Plan for monitoring and archives

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its encoder help does not promise that a stream running longer than 12 hours will be archived as one complete item, so a 24/7 broadcast should not be treated as a guaranteed single, uninterrupted replay. Decide how you need viewers to access the replay before choosing stream duration. YouTube’s encoder help describes this archive limit.

During the broadcast, check audio and video quality and verify the stream from the channel page, watch page, and mobile devices. In Live Control Room, review controls such as auto-start, auto-stop, and DVR and set them for the way you intend to operate the stream. YouTube’s live streaming tips cover monitoring and preparation.
